Has been mentioned a few times that he might have a captains clause or s starting clause.
Would be interesting to know for sure.
That would have to be one of the worst deals in A league history if that were the case. He wasn’t a particularly in demand player and we would already be paying him a fair bit more than Sydney could manage with the cap, great bit of negotiation by him if true. I’m a way it wouldn’t surprise me with some of the duds of the last few seasons but seriously..

The defensive spine last night was

--------------------Birra-----------------------
-----------Ziggy-----------Fox-------------
-----------Djuric--------Kim--------------

That is a completely different spine than any trial game. We need to realise that last nights performance was with a newly cobbled together back four and a spine that were basically shaking hands for the first time. It can only get better.

While I think he played well last night, I have also been wondering the same thing......could there be a clause in his contract requiring him to start/be captain? If there is and it stipulates a certain number of starts, perhaps its best to use up as many as possible early in the piece.

Yeah.... nah

Thanks Ads, I am a recent contributor and must have missed those earlier posts on this. Shame we don't have an insider who can shed some light

I was very happy with the result but lets not get carried away.
The Roar weren`t that good and although they kept possession for a fair while they didn`t create that much.
Their English imports didn`t impress me at all and hopefully Fowler has underestimated the strength of the A League

The game itself was typical of a pre-season comp with players like Djuric and Kim under hitting long passes,
mistimed tackles (Ziggy) and limited combinations.
This meant that players like DDS often looked like he`d made "poor decisions" when in some cases it was a lack of support from others.
DDS is the type of creative player that can make things happen and once his new team-mates realise this and support him more we`ll be so much better.
I agree with others here that Tommy Oar was a standout.I`ve never been a huge fan in the past, but what he did in this game has changed that to some extent, and i`m hoping he can improve and stay injury free.
One thing I did notice was the role JVS played at the end of extra time.
He pulled Biras away from the playing group and had a chat preparing him for the shootout, which I think was pivotal in Birras making the saves he did.
All in all though any win over Brisbane is a great win and full credit to Staj and everyone involved...

The commentator said that of DDS multiple times particularly when he didnt play Miller down the right side but I thought there were occasions where maybe Miller wasn't as far forward or in the spot DDS expected him to be. Fair enough too considering this is possibly the first time they've played together and the understanding or confidence in each other might not have been there. Not saying the commentator was wrong but I could understand some of those issues.

Just watched the game again.

We definitely played two up front. I do not think it created much of a threat. Simon and Murray did not seem to complement each other. Their best moments were in defending corners.

Maybe they would look better together with a narrow diamond midfield.

I think the attacking mid field was weakened too much wit two up front and two DMs, although I can understand and agree with the two DMs.

Thoughts?

My thoughts, we are playing with a 6 & 8, with Sun as the 6.

DDS is the 10 with a 7 & 11 on the wings...

Our 8 i.e Djuric is drifting between defensive and attacking duties... with Kim setting the defensive structure and both capable of playing out from the back...

Its weird in a way that our coach is saying we need a 6, an 8, with a 10 in front and a 7 and 11 on the wings for our midfield ... its kinda both very wise but something we have not seen in such a long time ...

This structure should suit DDS's style of play ... now to your question pertaining to our strikers... we need a back to goals striker as all our mids can score ... my reading of the tea leafs and Tarot cards is we have a coach who is used to recruiting players for set positions... we have left and right backs and left and right centre mids ... a decent keeper .. tis only up front we seem to lack ..

It looked to me that we had no wings just two strikers and two number 10s DDS and Oar playing fairly narrow.

It was a bit all over the shop, mainly cause we were being stretched.

I think the intention was the 4-1-4-1

But I think Murray was instructed to press and come out of the 4 when appropriate to make the other team clear the ball and have a better chance of gaining possession.
Which made the 4 become a narrower 3.

I believe we were outplayed and the structure might be our downfall.

Once Brisbane got around Murray and Simon we went back to being chasing headless chooks like the last 2 seasons.
Only difference was our defence only just held on thanks to Miller and the others as well putting in a good shift.

And as we saw when we did get the ball, passes went a stray and tired legs cleared the ball to hold on.

Not saying wasn’t a good performance, but is the structure susceptible to being to complicated during the heat of battle.

There was a lot of players pointing in the direction of players that needed to be marked coming through and pressing.
Who’s players were they? And who’s responsibility does it become at different points on the pitch.

Could be wrong about the formation but I feel the players were running everywhere tiring themselves out way more than what should be needed with defensive lines.

I’m a big worry wart and fear what will happen when we meet Sydney, Melb, etc.

I would like to see Duric and Kim as centre midfielders in a 4-4-1-1, with more space to receive and move the ball. A setup like Sydney with Brillante and O’Neill last year.
Once these two are fully fit and firing I think it is a safer formation that would suit The A-League better and bring more dominant display throughout the pitch.

Just my opinion but either way hopefully can find a rythm and keep the ball rolling!

I wouldn’t stress too much, I looked at our setup as a result of uncertainty over defensive cohesion, desire to have Simon out there rallying the troops and defending set pieces and potentially Staj doing his homework on how Brisbane have been playing. There’s no question we were playing on their terms and trying to keep it together for much of the game. Don’t forget they beat Sydney 2-0 in the previous round. Fowler has them looking good but only time will tell if they can get better or if they’ve just hit their level early and everyone will catch up.

Let’s see how we set up for the next round.

This should be a fun game to watch. We should win (but it's football so won't count any chickens) and takes us into a semi final. Might be the most success we have all season!

Already makes it the most successful season in years even if we spoon from here.

Any idea why? They seem a no brainer to be in the starting 11
I agree as would probably 99.9% of the fans and I certainly hope they both are fully fit and both starting. They are both in the squad just the indication that has been given is that may not be starting.

Assuming our Olyroos are back.

Without Kim and Duric it may be:

Birra
Ziggy Fox Rowles Clisby
Melling or Stensness
Murray De Silva Oar
Simon
