Gumps reckons he's about to get offered a spot in some HAL side shortly.

I wonder if its Fury....as Fergie would be well aware of his qualities.

I hope he does sign with someone so that we can give him the ovation he should have got at BT once McKinna decided he was going to shaft him at the end of the season.

always seemed like he would play for Fury for me...I actually thought they would take 1 or 2 more players of our hands... ???
he would be a good addition to their side IMO

NEWCASTLE Jets suffered a shock defeat at they were beaten 2-1 by a classy Sydney Olympic in a friendly at Belmore Oval in Sydney tonight.

Both Olympic goals came from defender Michael Cindric in the opening 12 minutes while Donny de Groot got Newcastle's consolation goal in the final five minutes of a game Olympic deserved to win.

Despite star signing Mark Bosnich pulling out at the last minute due to a TV commitment, the NSW Premier League team looked anything but second best against the A-League side which is preparing for next week's crucial ACL knockout round clash with Pohang Steelers in South Korea.

The Jets were missing Ljubo Milicevic, Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Jobe Wheelhouse but welcomed trialist Andre Gumprecht into the centre of midfield.

Playing a 4-2-3-1, coach Gary Van Egmond brought the former Mariner Gumprecht into a screener's role and dropped Ben Kantarovski into a central defensive position alongside Angelo Costanzo.

Chinese trialist, defender Wang Dong, was due to arrive in Australia tonight (Tues) to commence a stint with the Hunter club.

Panamanian trialist Victor Herrera, who only arrived earlier in the day from South America, started the second half as a wide midfielder in place of Jason Hoffman.

Olympic had former Sydney FC winger Adam Biddle starting as an attacking midfielder in a 4-5-1 employed by coach Nick Theo.

On a bitterly cold night, the reshaped Jets defence were caught cold and after six minutes they were behind.

A corner from the left was swung in by Chris Triantis and with Newcastle keeper Ben Kennedy rooted to his goalline defender Michael Cindric headed a powerful downward header into the back of the net.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 in almost identical circumstances. Adam Biddle's corner from the right found Cindric again and his looped header beat Kennedy.

And it could've been three just minutes later had it not been for Jets' Angelo Costanzo getting a desperate toed clearance to a cross and pushing it wide for a corner.

Olympic, buoyed by the surprise lead, took the game to their more illustrious opponents in the opening stages giving the ACL side no time on the ball.

In the shadows of half-time, a mistake by Kantarovski gifted Olympic a one-on-one with Kennedy but the youngster recovered well to extinguish the danger.

The Jets' best move of a woeful first half from them came after a good interchange of passes found striker Sean Rooney who blasted just wide.

The striker had another chance with a long-range shot as the Jets slowly gained the ascendancy going into the break.

Kaz Patafta came on for Gumprecht as the Jets looked to find some attacking impetus. The Jets came more into the game but were unable to fashion any clear chances.

In fact Olympic almost went three up after 65 minutes with two good efforts on goal as they continued to play a pressing game while defending with authority.

Jet striker Sasho Petrovski did get the ball in the net but it was ruled off-side minutes later.

Korean star Song made a return from injury as a 65th minute sub and his welcome return made a difference as it was hit blocked shot which saw Donny de Groot stab home the Jets first of the night on 85 minutes as the part-timers began to tire.

The Jets pressed in the final few minutes as their better fitness told but Olympic held out for a famous win their first in seven weeks.

The crowd was estimated at 250.

*In other news... Sydney Olympic will play Sydney FC in a friendly on Sunday July 19 at Belmore in what is planned to be a gala day of entertainment.

*Australia's deaf national team will play Ghana on July 26 in the curtain-raiser to the Olympic v Sydney United clash.

Playing for anyone else I'd give him a warm welcome back to Bluetongue.

But not if he's in scum colours.

+2

see my earlier posts- all very positive
I would gladly clap for him with respect for any side except Jest
really disappointing...although no better way to stick it to mariners mgt. then by doing the dirty and go running to the rivals!
That said, it would be dissrespectful to the fans who have clearly held him in good esteem

but dw guys, according to Jets forum he played crap
+ he got sent to the showers early, with Patafta replacing him (which shows how crap he must have played :p, he nevers gets game time)
but its the intention that matters...(ie. that he was prepared to play for them)

As much as I hate the Jest, I couldn't really hold it against Gumps if he played for them. We have said we don't want him and he will take what he can get. Would be much different if it were like Sasho's (Judas Mk II) case.

Im sure plenty of us would take A-league wages over State league wages anyday.

Good luck to him... even if it is the Jest

some more stuff from Jets forum about Gumpy (+ a bit on Sasho, lol)

Gumprecht (some good ball-winning stuff, but ultimately too slow, and he coughs up possession too easily)
Petrovski (who looked lazy all night and particularly uncomfortable playing without a partner)

Gumprecht has been playing but has been shit, and our goals have come from a defensive mixup in the box and a header from a corner.

I'm sure he would have preferred to stay a Mariner, but this was not to be and he can't be blamed for wanting to prolong his HAL days even if it is with our bitter rivals. good luck to him personally, but I hope the team as a whole crash and burn....

I hoped he wasn't going to Scum but you can't blame him as its the nearest club and means he doesn't have to move from Umina and his Footy school business.

We did the dirty on him not the other way round!

I'll cheer him onto the pitch EVEN in a scum shirt.

You have mentioned this in other threads as well.

How exactly did we do the dirty on him?

He came off contract and we didn't renew it. Happens every day in employment circles.

So I bought my wife a Jersey with "Gumprecht" printed on the back.

As it is quite obvious, I was a little disappointed that he was criminally neglected and finally dumped from the Mariners.

I thought that despite the fact he may get picked up by another A-league team, my wife can still wear her jersey proudly because of the honourable contribution he put into the team.

But now he may be going to the jets, I dont know. I sure as hell will never "boo" the guy. But can my wife still wear the jersey? What do you guys think?

Yes, the bloke did well for us, and the memory should be honoured. :)

Anyway, any wife who wears a Mariners jersey should be encouraged. Mine stays away, or marks maths papers. :ashamed:
