I couldn't give a rats about the WSW fans on here; no pats on the head from me - you won last night, hope Brisbane wins today and towels you up next week. Now jog on.
For us; it was a pretty tired looking performance, and a bit toothless. I wasn't expecting us to play the backwards facing triangle last night, but watching the energy levels I can see why they did. It meant that both Caceres and Hutch were looking to push on as a pair of #10s, and it sorta worked, because we found a lot of space on the flanks to open them up, but the final ball was lacking. WSW defended narrow and left the channels open, but were also clever in closing the crossing paths down. Best example; when Duke broke away and was kept wide but had to shoot because there was no cross possible.
We pretty much had to go wide, because it seemed every time we were in the middle there'd be some niggly, cynical foul to break up play. It was as frustrating as it was predictable; what seemed a concerted tactic to slow down our counter-attacks. Wanderers fans (and even our own) might complain that we were negative, looking to soak and hit on the break, but at least we were within the laws of the game. Had KGJ been a bit quicker on the cards, it might have opened the game up a little.
Also, I'm not quite sure how La Rocca stayed on the park (should've had at least yellow for his hand to the throat, and a second yellow later), nor am I sure
how Ono didn't get a second yellow for his time-wasting shot waaaaay after the whistle in the second half. Bosnar's tackle in the corner was a bit on the orange side of a yellow card, but he'd still have been a little hard done by to get red. Was there also something about La Rocca with another elbow? He's got form, maybe the MRP will have something to look at.
Anyway, moving on, Mariners have done everything this year the hard way.
At the end of February that while we'd we'd lost 5 matches in a row, lost 5 first teamers in the off-season and another three during the year, plus the coach, plus the fitness coach, plus our star signing to injury.
By season's end we'd have been within 20 minutes of the knockout stages in the ACL after drawing the group from hell, getting goal difference from second and one match from the Grand Final.
Shows a bit of character. A bit of pride. A bit of guts.
That's what I take from this year. So what if we do it the hard way. We're the Mariners.
