Mariner Mick,

Re the interview with David Carney what reason did he give for it being unlikely he'd play for the Mariners on loan?
David does not want to go back in level. He has offers on the table from both Italy and Germany and believe me from what he told me they are decent football clubs. He will leave Sheffield Utd in January. As will Paddy Kenny from what i believe.

Sheffield had no interest in Mile from the people at the club i spoke to. They knew who he was but the coaching staff were not very interested in bringing him over to the UK.

mile is half croatian isnt he? But croatia dont count as EU? So he would use a foreign player spot?

pretty sure both parents are croatian - i know his dad is definitely

yep, croatia is not in the EU but they are close to joining

slovenia just joined this year

the championship does not have a limit on how many non eu players can be at a club

Either way they are hoping to be in the premiership next season?

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
yeh I saw something similar on bigpond....LM said that if carney didnt get a spot in the first transfer window he would offer him a spot in the ACL line up

Imho, Carney would only be helpful in replacing someone like Heffo if he's not firing or playing the albino in front of Hutch on the left handside if we play a 4-2-3-1, with Hutch being the lhsided DM in the '2'.

As for replacing Mile, apples and .......lemons.

Story on the World Game confirms David Carney unlikely to join the Mariners.

The sooner he does find another club the better for him & the National Team.

It basically comes down to whether Carney finds a new club before the window closes. If he doesn't, I think there's a good chance he'll come here; like Lawrie says, A-League finals and ACL has to be better than reserve team football.

If he does find a new club in Europe, of course that's his first choice and so it should be.

Some media reports make him look in demand, others suggest he might come back. You never know the sources for this stuff, whether they're gunning for better deals or drumming up interest, or what's happening. I think it's basically a wait and see game.

Sorry - is the guy actually that good? He seemed to be worked out by the opposition after the first season of the A-League. When he plays at LB for Australia out CBs always look to have a bad game - when in fact they are just covering an out of position Carney.

As you can guess I don't want him except for maybe as a backup - and definitely not at LB.

Heff left back, Carney left mid, hutch DM, Caceras behind strikers. Perfect. He wont come back tho, so moving on.

EXCLUSIVE: [glow=red,2,300]Lawrie McKinna believes David Carney could play up to 11 games for the Mariners[/glow] if he can sign the out-of-favour Sheffield United winger on loan as a marquee this month.

McKinna contacted Sheffield United yesterday about offering the Socceroo a loan spell at Bluetongue stadium.

That spell could significantly boost the Mariners' A-League chances if the former Sydney FC star arrived on a marquee deal at the end of January.

This would mean the Sheffield United Aussie could play in the A-League finals in February if the Mariners, as expected, qualify as well as the Asian Champions League starting in March.

The attacking wingback potentially gets 11 quality games under his belt before the next transfer window opens in Europe.

The Mariners supremo told au.fourfourtwo.com the Carney option would benefit both club and player.

"If he wants a move and doesn't get anything in Europe, he's better off coming back on loan and playing games rather than reserve football.

"Nothing's official. I've emailed Sheffield United yesterday about it and have not heard back."

He added: "It gives him a chance to put himself back in the shop window ahead of the June transfer window.

"We don't have the full squad right now, we've got about 18 players so it'd help us.

[glow=red,2,300]"We should know in about ten days."[/glow]

One player who will be on trial at Bluetongue soon is Sydney FC youth team midfielder Chris Triantis.

The talented former NSW Premier League will finish his commitments with Sydney FC before trialling with the Gosford-based franchise.

Triantis has not made the Sydney FC first team largely due to starting XI regulars Terry McFlynn and Stuart Musialik being very similar in style and position to the former Sydney Olympic player.

But like Kofi Danning, Rhyan Grant and Zach Cairncross, the 21-year-old has impressed with Steve O'Connor's youth team.

"We'll give Triantis a chance to see what he can do but I wouldn't imagine he'd be a replacement for Mile Jedinak just yet," said McKinna.

McKinna plucked Jedinak from the NSW Premier League in 2006 before the midfielder became a star and was sold to Turkish club Genclerbirligi two weeks ago.

In other A-League news, gun Melbourne youngster Cameron Watson will trial with Gold Coast United when they begin pre-season in April.

Thank god for that post.  I thought I must've been going insane or something - I don't see what's so good about him.  I wouldn't want him playing for us, tbh.  All I can remember about seeing him play was just how well we generally contained him.

Here's an idea - stop chasing attackers and start LOOKING FOR SOME FRIKKING DEFENDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cant see that Carney would add anything to our squad TBH.

Pie eater says he will be fit, Adrian can revert to LM.

What we actually NEED is a CM/DM

Why does everyone keep talking about Carney??????
He will not be coming to the Mariners!!!  He spoke to Coast Fm in December and said he wouldn't be coming.
