Merenda was absolutely f**king terrible - he stood out in our yoof team as an awful footballer (and that is a big effort).

But he did dress well.

BUT....was he wearing Burberry? ;) ;D  Footballer, no........ hell no.

Meggsi I'd have back in a heartbeat, but he's contracted to Aahlborg for another two seasons so they will be looking for a transfer fee. Doubt we'd be able to cough up that sort of fee, unless Meggsi can convince the Danish club he wants to go home and they like the lad enough to drop the fee a fair bit. But I also think he wants to stay in Europe if he can - obviously better pay awaits there.

A lineup involving Kisnorbo, Yorke, Sterj and Meggsi would salivating but the FFA auditors would be right onto us as I doubt this A-League could handle that sort of pay under it's salary cap requirements.

Adding Bozza would be difficult, I was led to believe that he and Yorke do not wish to be associated with each other, wrong perhaps?

Carney - forget it. All he could do was to pressure Heff for the LB. midfield role and we have Pedj to do that on occasions now.

I know I say this every couple of months but...
NEDVED
Nedved is uncontracted
And he is having 2nd thoughts on retirement
Sure he has been a bit injury prone lately
But I would gladly pay money to watch him (eg. if he was signed by another HAl team I would travel as far as Sydney or Newcastle to watch each game even if mariners werent playing)

I wonder how much effort it takes for a club to make a phone call- just to see if possible. I have no clue wat wages he would command

Nedved ... did your mother not warn you about one handed typing .. like a player of that class ... would be nice but that one handed typing again.

i can dream cant i?
but surely this is the sort of things we could be doing...? ie. making phone calls- hit and miss method
wats the worst that could happen? his agent laughs at us?
that said if there was any chance Asia + Middle East would be more financially abled than us

EDIT: unless FIFA09 is really realistic in the fact that the number of negotiations you can carry out in a week is limited :p
When I got mariners in 09- i try to limit my crazy targets for that reason

My understanding is that we have lost O'Grady, Rizzo, Gumprecht, Osman, Owens & Petrovski and Clarkey (at least fro the most part) from the squad. Nash and Mrdja are yet to resign.

What sort of money would this free up under the salary cap?

well wats the min salary nowadays
from memory in V1 it was 30k minimum...

these are thus complete guesses
I would say O'grady= 50k
Rizzo= nothing (wasnt part of salary cap- i think we can pay as much as we want for ACL)
Osman= 80-100k
Gumprecht = 80-100k
Petrovski= 150k +
Clarkey= 80-100k

so wat 450k?
My idea for 5 players we want to sign
Brady, Lewis + Sherlock 30k each
leaves 360k for 2 players
say get a decent 100k player
leaves 260k for someone else :D

that wont happen
PS. 83% of above information is probably crap ;) :p

I think if the Mariners are serious about being a long term venture they need to invest in the team now. We need a good season with good crowds leading into the 2010 World Cup. A good showing at the World Cup and we could really cement the Central Coast as a football area going into Season 6.

On the flip side a poor season by the Mariners and a poor showing at the World Cup and a possible rebirth of the Bears could  mean trouble. The other problem is I believe the original franchisees were only guaranteed the first 5 years.

From the figures above we should have around 600K under the cap available before we bought Travis. We need a marquee striker/attacking midfielder and a youth marquee outside of the cap and we need to use the cap. If we strengthen the squad significantly with the likes of Sterjovski and couple of good CBs, a little more creativity - then we can have a good season, boost the crowds and hopefully return to profit. (I know this last part shouldn't be my concern as a fan - but it certainly means something to investors)

Hopefully we have learnt that penny-pinching with the squad hurts the income stream and viability of the club.

btw figures also released (eg. 30 k minimum) stated 100k average wage v1
might try to find these articles later
but i definately remember those exact figures (thought to myself if you were only HAL standard thats a crap living tbh, no wonders a few are concerned with uni/coaching)
hence why i put owens and petrovski definately above average

Next seasons (09/10) the aleague min. wage for over 21 will be 45K. and 35K for under 21. Both will increase with CPI thereafter.
