Central Coast Mariners Squad for 2009/10 HAL Season

is there any indication that we're not spending the full cap, or making use of the service agreements? if so, then i think we can say that there is a money issue, otherwise we're looking at only two players that can be dealt with simply through an exercise in the power of cash.

a marquee position
a youth marquee position

the marquee can be anyone, at any price.

the youth marquee i think has to be aussie, has to be in the junior NT setup and there or thereabouts for the seniors and can be paid up to $150k.

these are the only positions that can be *bought* outside of normal salary capped operations. so in all likelihood, the question is not so much are the powers that be not laying out cash on salary-cappable players (that's more a question of caps clashing with costs as competition heats up for players) but instead for the higher wage spots.

if we've been beaten out of competition for big names with big $$$ attached, that's one thing, but really in the absence of credible stories with players' names in them, it's easier to assume that they've been dropping a hook in the ocean but haven't had any bites.

the asian leagues flapping the chequebooks simply cannot be helping in this regard - people are making marquee wages in china for squaddie spots and the standard is apparently about the same. makes it very hard for a little club on a budget.

all the same, our cap spots aren't set in stone for 09/10 and i'd be very surprised if there weren't a number of spots opening up to be filled by a couple of new signings but also kids coming through (not even necessarily from our own youth program - NYL is a great little shop window for players from other clubs too).

If this is the player I am thinking about (the Iraqi AM), he was head and shoulders better than anyone else on the pitch at BT that night. Well worth a look and a try I would have thought.

IRAQI international Ali Abbas Mshehid - who was granted political asylum in Australia after skipping out of the team hotel in Gosford 15 months ago - will take the first steps towards resurrecting his professional career by playing for Marconi Stallions in this year's NSW Premier League.

Ali Abbas, 22, is back in Baghdad to sort out international clearance from his previous club, Al Quwa Al Jawiya, and due to return to Sydney in time to start the NSWPL season on March 1, when the Stallions host Penrith-Nepean United at Bossley Park. It's understood Ali Abbas has also been mending fences with the Iraqi Football Association, and is tipped to make his international comeback when Iraq finetune their preparations for this year's FIFA Confederations Cup with a three-week camp in Sydney in late May. That visit could also involve a match against the Socceroos, who will be warming up to play two other Middle Eastern opponents - Qatar and Bahrain - in the World Cup qualifiers in early June.

Ali Abbas, together with teammates Ali Mansour and Ali Khadher, defected from the Iraqi under-23 team after they lost a crucial Olympic qualifier against the Olyroos in Gosford on November 17, 2007. Ali Mansour decided to return home, but both Ali Khadher and Ali Abbas remained in Sydney - supported by members of the local Iraqi community - and were eventually granted political asylum and citizenship last June.

A month later, both players had a brief trial with Newcastle Jets, but failed to earn contracts.

New Marconi coach Lee Sterrey has taken a different view, opening the door for both players - although Ali Khadher has since opted to drop down a level to play with Granville Rage.

Ali Abbas, however, made it clear to Sterrey he was determined to return to top-flight football before flying back to Baghdad just before Christmas to sort out his affairs, and the Stallions coach is delighted to oblige. Ali Abbas has already played eight times for the Iraqi national team, notably during the 2007 Asian Cup triumph, which included a famous win over the Socceroos.

"As far as triallists go, he's the best one I've seen in 30 years of football," Sterrey said. "He's an unbelievable player, better than almost all the left-sided ones I've seen in the A-League. His use of the ball, his pace, his ability to open things up, it's top shelf. I can't believe an A-League club hasn't snapped him up by now.

"He's due back in the next couple of weeks, and I'm desperate to have him here. We want to put him on a stage where people can see just how good he is."

But anyway, he is a english born player who has spent alot of time in the lower leagues of england. Spent most of his time in the midfield but was prone to injuries

I like the idea of looking at Asian players as they are looking at taking our players the other way. Be good for the marketplace even though Australia is a selling league.

Yes he trailled with Newcastle Jets and failed. He is an iraqii international. Why not look at him. See how he goes for Marconi and then try to sort it out from there.
No harm in that.

I'm sure that Lawrie and a few other interested parties might be heading to Marconi matches over the winter to have a look. If he is a fast left sided player, he may be a good buy as a replacement for Hutch should the favourite son get injured.

All they have to think about is who makes the press appearances to announce big signings when they do come (eg. Aloisi & Bosnich) - always the Chairman; the manager never takes the credit for a big signing.

Given that the last one (Bosnich) was announced in the off-season, fans who only pay attention at the end of the season might not be aware of this and therefore blame the manager for lack of recruiting.
