Just read that Owens is out with a back injury (source: Bearinator in Van Stratten thread below), and that O'Grady has an achilles injury (same thread).

Looks like V2 all over again, so I may as well kick off an Injury Thread so we know who ISN'T going to figure in matches this HAL v4.

Osman: slowly returning from major knee injury.
Mrdja: Ditto(expected to have some gametime in next week or so)
Heffernan: slowly returning from leg break & now playing.
Owens: Back gone. Time out???
O'Grady: Achilles injury. Time out??

Any others?

Mods:Suggest this be stickied and placed next to Squad 2008/09 Thread.  :tophat:

osman and heff are back in full training and totally recovered from their respective injuries - so much so that heff came first in the fitness test yesterday

mrdja is back to full training

wilko will miss this weekend's game because of the knee injury picked up against northern tigers but will be right after this

macallister will be back this weekend from his hammy injury

owens is a long way off

stringers could be a few weeks or could need an operation - don't know yet

all, in all, not that dire and certainly does not need a new thread

I am intrigued....how do you know such things?

I am not questioning the accuracy but I am humbled by your insight.

research, going to pretty much all the games, getting press releases from the club, talking to lawrie and the players, talking to others in the know and sometimes rocking up to training (when work permits)

doing the football for coast-fm i have an obligation to find out what is going on

Mariners Triallists Close To Deal

http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/80035,mariners-triallists-close-to-deal.aspx

Jul 9 2008 11:31

EXCLUSIVE: Former Qantas Joey Predrag Bojic and ex Empoli midfielder Frank Lagana are poised to seal deals with Central Coast Mariners if they shine against Newcastle Jets this weekend.
Coach Lawrie McKinna is still looking for a defender and an attacking midfielder ahead of the A-League campaign and both players have already been given run outs in previous trial games for the Mariners.

Bojic, who has experience in England with Northampton Town, is currently with NSW Premier League side Sutherland Sharks while Lagana has been playing his football with Oakleigh in the Victorian Premier League.

McKinna told au.fourfourtwo.com: "We're going to give them another chance against the Jets and then we'll see."

The Gosford boss has also confirmed that Nik Mrdja will be included in the Mariners squad for the match against Newcastle in Canberra.

He said: "Nik will be on the bench and we're hoping to give him 15 minutes or so.

"We'll build him up slowly but to have a fit again Nik Mrdja will be to give us a very good new player.

"He's had a very difficult time but he's always found a way to smile and laugh. I think he's had to, just to keep his sanity."

The club's link with Sheffield United will not yield any players from England for the new season.

But McKinna said: "Kevin Blackwell (United boss) and his staff have been very good and they are going to use their contacts to look at players elsewhere who are out of contract and could be of interest to us."

these might be good signings, but shouldnt the mariners look for more experienced players especially since owens and stringers are both out long term. Also we should be looking towards the ACL by bringing in experienced players.

ACL signings dont need to be rushed. We can bring them over at any time in the season

ACL = no salary cap too, and higher cap on squad numbers. guest players on big $$$ is a possibility, if singo wants to wave some wedge around?

Would be a massive kick in the teeth to the players if that does occur. I don't believe it is the mariners way of operation either.

If they are looking for quality players it should be for the a-league rather than a few months during the ACL i would not like to see "ACL guest stints" at the mariners.

Depends on what the Mariners want to get out of their first ACL.

If they just want the exposure and the limelight in Asia to do business deals with, get the likes of Spencer, Tomasevic and Leo Carle in to bolster the squad and send all the management team over - and budget for wholesale love-in conferences with business folks!

If they want to get some results ON the field, they will need to buy up some very decent players, and they won't come cheap - even for a short stint in the ACL.

(Would be hilarious if they signed Aloi$i for a short term stint if Bling FC don't get a bite on the ACL cherry the following season, and he pressures them into loaning him to us! ;D)

I would also be cheeky enough to note that these rounds all happen in mid 2009, and if some Socceroos are not getting gametime with their home domestic club and want to get a taste of the Asian conditions, then that maybe also a leverage the Mariners' management could do to get a star player on loan from their domestic club (eg. Carney at Sheffield).

Then you can't be too keen to see us progress beyond the group stages......  this time around we're (an Australian team) not going to be lucky enough to draw a near certain 6 points kind of team (one of those rubbish Thai teams that gets done 8-1 at home), and we're going to need every last bit of quality we can find.  A 'guest' attacking midfielder/striker who can bring in that extra bit of chutzpah when we'll need it the most...... you would really say no to that??

...while if we hand the rest of the league their arses in their monogrammed hats, win the league with a month to spare and waltz about basically taking the piss in the grand final, it'd be fair to say the players would be somewhat peeved if they were palmed off to the pine for the likes of a sometimes-squaddie from sao paolo or the fruitcutter from ferencvaros. ;)

ACL = no salary cap too,

When did this change?  Sure, the AFC doesn't impose salary cap restrictions, but I'm pretty sure that the FFA still require that a salary cap is maintained for any A-League squad that participates.
