Central Coast Mariners squad - 2010/2011 HAL season

Its called a Squad.

Brockie is imho superior to Kwas/D-Mac and Disco (in current dire form).

McBreen and Simon would be a powerful combination.

I'd like a Marquee standard signing to partner Simon with Brockie & McBreen to come in when injuries and form dictate.

However i'd much prefer Simon & McBreen to Simon and Kwas....wouldn't you?

well well...now we talk about squad players again?
pfffttt

As much as I hate Kwassie...I'd keep him as squad player
a) for sentimental reasons (believe it or not)
b) he is more prolific than DMAC and Mrdja (barely tbh)
c) He is versatile

a) has no place - if it did we'd never have made the (correct) decision to let gumps go, as well as browny, sully, petrie, leo carle... ;D
b) don't make me laugh. compare their goal to game ratios
c) he's not *that* versatile - wide man or withdrawn striker. he's not really able to play anything else.

i'd still like to see another genuine striker in the system/have one of our other strikers discover what the net's for.

Hate is a strong word... can we please use other words, such as dislike?

Kk thanks.

As much as Kwassie frustrates me?

tbh if you look at the way the post was written...I was actually giving the guy a positive wrap ;)
next time I'll stick to 'politely' baggin him instead of rudely praising him :p

a) I guess your right in terms of the context of who have let go.

b) I dunno. Do we want to include (yes/no)
i) His penalties
ii) ACL
iii) His stay at the phoenix (or are we comparing them strictly on a mariners basis). (This was what I was hoping for seeing as who gives a crap about other teams, all that matters is with us)

Where am I wrong? Kwas vs Macca, Kwas vs Mrdja? or both?

c) that's 3 positions on the field...better than the other 2 (who can only play in 2 of the slots)
I know who I would rather have as a squad player. Tbh 'specialists' are usually only good when they are starting players. It's very hard especially with small benches in a-league to afford to have players that arent versatile!

kwas is more prolific for us than the other two no matter how you spin it. it's not an amazing rate, especially when you consider 4 goals have been penalties, but it's not bad. he's spent *most* of that time playing in a wider position too, and to be fair d-mac has also spent a fair bit of time wide.

mrdja's the only one of the three who is purely a striker, and his scoring rate isn't that flash for a pure striker.

kwas
games: 72
goals: 15
games/goals: 4.80

goals (not counting penalties): 11
games/goals: 6.55

dmac
games: 29
goals: 4
games/goals: 7.25

mrdja
games: 31
goals: 6
games/goals: 5.17

so none of the three are especially prolific or threatening.

Don't know how you could look at dropping Kwasnik unless you were cutting all three (which would be overkill IMO).

Mrdja first, then Macallister (I probably would, but if he's cheap he may suit 4th choice), then Kwasnik if you wanted to go overboard and cut all three.

Agree 100%

Kwassie is a good a squad player as you will find in the HAL

Tries 100% all the time and understands the team and our system.

I note something of interest. You are talking about buying A League players and not about someone from Conference Level in England. Maybe the quality is getting better??

McBreen was brought up because of TV talk. As for the other names mentioned, in no way could we be talking about quality. There are many names that could do a job in conference level that it would be pointless to speculate.

prolific no, but dmac can be quite threatening IMO. He does more to build play than Mrdja.

So with our current signed players we have a line up

            Danny/Redders

RB1/RB2 Wilko/RCB2 Doig/Bojic LB1/LB2

          DM1/DM2

RM1/RM2 LM1/LM2

          Wee Mac/AM2

Marquee Striker/Kwas Matty/S4

Quite a few gaps. If we assume that Clarky reverts to fitness coach only and Elrich and Mrdja don't make the grade next year then a possible line up is;

                    Danny/Redders

Boogs/Porter Wilko/Sherlock     Doig/Bojic Heff/D'Apuzzo

                    Crowell/Huke

Travis/Lewis                         Hutch/Cahill
                      Wee Mac/Nikas

Marquee Striker/Kwas           Matty/Dyl

While it looks quite solid the Marquee striker is the key. The flexibility of people like Hutch, Kwas, Porter and Bojic means that each position can be covered fairly well. This is a feature that will serve us well this year and hopefully in coming seasons.

D'Apuzzo and Lewis will probably be resigned as they fit the U21 and will relatively cheap. I think Porter and Dyl will also be retained unless better options are available at around the same price.

I would really like to lock in Heff, Boogs, Hutch and Travis soon. Along with either Crowell or Huke. These players, along with the already contracted players will form the base of the first team.

The only thing missing is the cutting edge up front.

Agree. I am really hoping that dmac can find some great goal-scoring form for the rest of season and beyond, though that is not the biggest part of his game.

Lewis plays on the left; why Cahill? Will Brady Smith make the grade? Couldn't care if Dmac leaves, shouldn't be too hard to replace a striker who doesn't score? Don't think Dappuzzo is good enough but he might be one of Lawrie's projects (as in Porter, Boogard, Kwas etc). Fully support the idea of a marquee striker.

I think D'Appuzzo is a keeper. On the form he showed against GC he has proven he can cut it at this level, just needs consistency which will come with experience. A good U21 spot IMO.

You heard a rumour in Newcastle that a mariners player was moving to SA or VIC. And do please tell how you came about this rather juicy piece of gossip?
