Wow, I always knew he was a great coach and the reason for his sacking had to be interference from the Club's unnamed hierarchy.

What a brave whistle blower.

Away from our issues, are you in a position to offer any information pertaining to:-
  • iHal, Whats happening...
  • How FFA will fit in the broader scheme of things
  • Expansion
  • There was a lot of talk pre the change in governance about Hal clubs spending more on promotion and better social media networking... to date nothing seems to be happening.
  • What the relationship is with Fox.
The silence of both iHal & FFA is starting to become and issue... we are just out well not just almost 12 months out of a three year civil war that has driven metrics thu the floor...

Hand on heart not the other thing... this is crazy the clubs torn FFA apart with the promise the world move and not a thing for close to 12 months... not even an update on where we are going...

I think it’s as simple as iHAL is in caretaker mode due to Fox threatening to pull the pin on the rights deal due to a hole in the contract about a change in administration. Wasn’t thought through very well in the end.

The new head of the FFA has said for pretty much all intents and purposes the league is self governing they’re just a rubber stamp and in the picture due to rights but just a figurehead beyond the responsibilities they’ll have moving forward.

Om an operational day-to-day basis. But legally and financially the contracts are still with the FFA. The FFA still own the Fox contract, the FFA still own the IP which makes investing in players for the sake of getting $4 a shirt fairly ludicrous. The FFA still won't allow another car manufacturer to be a club sponsor or Optus against Telstra or KFC against McDonalds or Emirates against Qantas..

If the FFA are passing through the income it doesn’t matter that much. Yes the contracts are in place to avoid giving foxtel an out but it genuinely looks like the post Lowy FFA wants to facilitate the handover in good faith.
And on the sponsor thing isn’t there already differences? I see Maccas and KFC on shirts. City had a Nissan sponsorship too afaik.

I hope you are right and I have no reason to think otherwise - but until there is genuine control you can expect the owners who collectively have probably put in north of $250M being a bit gun-shy.

Of course the gap is already there but it will only widen. Towing the party line so he doesn’t lose support and get booted? Do we need to scrap the cap to bring in buying and selling between clubs and generate interest over it?

I agree with him however that the stadium management makes sense and imo is actually good for the coast. Because it’s been poorly managed to date and more importantly the death of the Mariners would be a massive blow to the region imo. And despite our deep wish for MC to be willing to lose more of his money so we can be better, which I agree we do need, all he does is lose money on us and get hated for it. And no one else is champing at the bit to lose money on us.

So personally I’m a bit tired of the narrative about our owner. Far too simplistic and punitive.

Jesus if anyone wants a wake up call on how bad things got around here read the highlighted bit below. I guarantee you this never would have gotten legs under Shaun's watch and probably is a good indication of the lunatics in charge of the place back then. I personally believe we have really turned the corner as long as we keep Stajic and he is allowed to spend at least or close to the salary cap. I can see him making improvements to the squad and he will have improved himself this year as coach as well.

https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...-to-burnish-golden-crop-of-australian-coaches

Phil Moss was prepared for the sack before he was ever appointed a head coach. “I’ll never forget the first day of my A Licence,” he recalls. “The instructor wrote on the whiteboard: ‘There’s only one sure thing about professional coaching, and that is you will get sacked’.”

That sure thing happened to Moss in February 2015, just over a year after taking charge of Central Coast Mariners. Based purely on results – three wins in 19 games during Moss’s second season at the helm - it was an uncontroversial dismissal. “At the end of the day it’s on my head. I’m the head coach, I’m responsible for that,” he accepts. “But people need to understand there is a backstory to the performance of every team, and it’s not just the coach.”

This particular backstory included a complicated working relationship with the club’s hierarchy. “I was asked to set up for a rugby lineout at a corner,” Moss explains. “That was designed to create headlines and get the Mariners brand viral. But it was never going to happen. In my mind it was playing with a coach’s career and asking the players on the pitch to do something not within the spirit of the game. For me that was a bit of a sign of the tide turning.”

Moss was an absolute Muppet. He also did some shonky things to the club allegedly.
Apparently a nice bloke but clueless.

FP. Can you give us a different narrative about our owner?

"Central Coast Mariners owner Mike Charlesworth has called for an end to the A-League salary cap ahead of a critical owners’ meeting in Sydney on Thursday which will also look at ways to institute a transfer system across the competition."

Seriously, how does MC even walk into that meeting with a straight face?? We fans always cop a good ribbing from rival fans etc, but you would have to think the owners give it times 100

"Hey Pikey, how many games since a clean sheet?"

"Hey Pikey, we all chipped in so we can donate you guys some specialised coaches for your strikers"

etc etc

I cannot see any advantage for these calls to get rid of the cap, for the Mariners.

An unregulated league clearly favours the rich clubs.

The only story that makes sense, that I can guess, is that he has a buyer lined up who will not buy in until the A-League becomes totally independent and unregulated. It is consistent with his past statements that investment will come with independence.
If it is a big European club looking to Australia as a cheap source of quality youth players. This could also make sense with the emphasis (especially from Anton) on encouraging youth to come to the Club.

The theories that he is prepared to lose millions running the Club into the ground just do not make sense.

My story is just a guess but why else would someone keep the Club on nothing more than life support.

It cannot be ego in owning a football club. There is no Kudos in owning a club that consistently runs last in a small league.

I cannot believe it is because he loves the Central Coast.

He is a business man and his aim is to maximise profit.

If anyone has a different credible scenario I would interested to hear.

Yeah just for clarification the takeaway from my quoted article was the bolded bit about thinking it Ok to ask the first team coach to try a rugby lineout formation in a football game. In no way was I offering excuses or passing comment on Moss as a manager. To be honest Moss, Walmsley, Okon and Mulvey have all blurred into one really really bad manager in my memory - I can't remember when one started and the other one finished. I think without doubt we have finally gotten proper manager back and the first one since Arnold - he is just starting from a much lower base and without as much resources so we need to be patient and will be rewarded with some better times are ahead.
