ccmfans.net is the Central Coast Mariners fan community, and was formed in 2004, so basically the beginning of time for the Mariners. Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If you want to get rid of this message, simply click on Join Now or head over to https://www.ccmfans.net/community/register/ to join the community! It only takes a few minutes, and joining will let you post your thoughts and opinions on all things Mariners, Football, and whatever else pops into your mind. If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

Nowhere close on a perfect day and they'll be lucky to get 5,000 is they treat us like mugs again.

The thing I find so mind-numbingly stupid is how people on here somehow seem to think the financial strategy this year was smart or good business. It is DUMB DUMB DUMB - whatever cost savings they have made to the squad have been well and truly soaked up by lower gates and the cost due to treating the fans with such disrespect is pretty hard to measure. It will take significant investment just to get support back to what they had three seasons ago, let alone when the club actually cared about its community
I am so f**king sick of this "when the club actually cared about it's community" rubbish line people throw out.

The club is right now more invested in the community than at any other point in it's history. Community appearances are up by a crazy amount across the season. The figure I saw from the start of pre-season to a week or so ago is something like 1,000.

Please separate the comments about the rubbish on field and the word "community" - they're frustratingly off-base and lacking at a factual basis. Talk "members and supporters" when you infer disrespect from the club, fine. But don't go insulting the hundreds of hours the clubs staff and their players put into appearances at local clubs, public events etc. It's poor form.

As for lower gates - we averaged more than last season, and had the same number of members. We also had an average gate higher than in 2010/11, a season in which we made the Grand Final. Pretty sure we beat out 2009/10 as well.

Timmah,

you are right the club has made a lot of Community appearances this year. I think the problem is understanding the differences between Community Appearances and Community Engagement. They are two different things. I can tell you the Club is no where near as engaged in the community (and in the right areas of the community) as it was in seasons 1-5. It has got better this year than the last 2 years under a different CEO, but it is nothing like seasons 1-5.

A club like CCM needs targeted engagement and smarter engagement as it doesn't have the resources to be all things to all people. It is getting Better (and I think Shaun is good for this) but there is still a long way to go to be even near where they were in seasons 1-5.

I find it interesting it's "Seasons 1 to 5".

To me it's Seasons 1 to 3... 4 and 5 saw it start to drop away - then it disappeared completely from 6-10.

Anyway, I digress - what would you suggest for targeted / smarter engagement? I think the Welcome Wednesdays/pub nights idea in the last pre-season was a fantastic initiative and the access to the club through pre-match functions and away trips was pretty good, no?

All I can say is that over 5,000 people agree with me and need to be convinced that MC and his cronies will do the right thing going forward, and I'm not talking about a couple of washed up Sydney FC players

Faty and Tavares (if signed) are far from washed up, they have been amongst Sydneys best over the last couple of seasons. They will be great additions to our team and definate starting players in most A league sides.

Wait what? Are you saying that the 5000 that showed up for games with 12000 people watching in 2008, all stopped showing up, during the Arnie years, because they agree with you that Charlesworth and Walmsley have been doing a poor job over the last 12 months??? :D

Taking out things like derbies, mid-week games, games at other grounds and NYE, our average crowds over the years have been as follows:
  1. 7,276
  2. 8,268
  3. 9,887
  4. 9,529
  5. 6,977
  6. 7,140
  7. 8,479
  8. 7,822
  9. 7,758
  10. 6,862
  11. 6,965
So we've dropped about 3,000 from our peak.

There's another dynamic here too - it's rumoured that back in the early days we were reporting somewhat inflated crowds...

Our core support might not have dropped that much.

Additionally, you can see that aside from the big climb in the first three years, the big drop from season 4 to 5 and the climb the 2nd year we won the league, the number has been pretty stable.

There's been a steady drift since we won the championship, and a lot of that is down to the fact that even before the Grand Final win, there was a heap of negative publicity around the club.

Even on here, where you'd expect to have reasonably positive chatter, it was a doomsayer's paradise. A lot of people seemed convinced we were going to fold, be moved or simply go to shit.

That drop in fan sentiment has only continued as we had games move away and the Chairman himself sending mixed signals about our future.

This is why it's important that this off-season break the trend.

We've posted a figure in black, which is only a temporary sign of health but it means we're not missing break-even by a million miles in a normal year.

The COE's actually pulling money in now, which could free up some of MC's hitherto limited funds to prop up the football club.

We've got one last year before the new TV deal, so (relative) financial stability is just around the corner.

Between now and October, the club is going to have to work their arses off to build confidence and optimism for the coming season.

We've shed the bulk of expensive and troublesome players, so we can at least go into a year spending our salary cap money on players actually available to turn out for the club.

We've made one experienced signing with the promise of more.

These signals and more are what's required to get the long-term drift in sentiment to start coming back. With sentiment comes bums on seats.

And if I may make one important suggestion: let that palm tree kit never see the light of day again.

Win a game or two and watch the numbers increase as well. All told fan numbers have been decent considering the season. If we look like more wins a lot will get excited again, I believe

I think another highly important thing to note when talking average crowds is that for the first 3 or 4 seasons, we only had 8-9 home games in a season. This has since jumped to the 12-14 range. That's more games, higher membership prices, etc etc and doesnt help. People were happy to attend 8-9 games a season but a 27 week campaign with 12-14 home games is too much for a lot of people, especially families.

JMO anyway.
