Socceroos goalkeeper Ryan ready for Valencia battle:

Mat Ryan hopes new Valencia coach Cesare Prandelli gives him a chance to prove his worth despite being away with Australia this week.

Ryan said he's unsure where he stands with Prandelli but hopes his absence won't be a setback as he looks to re-establish himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper.

Former Italy coach Prandelli was appointed at the helm of the struggling La Liga club last week, becoming the fifth manager Ryan will have played under since his move in July 2015.

The 24-year-old was there for Prandelli's official introduction but had to leave to join the Socceroos squad ahead of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Ryan has played only 10 league matches for third-bottom Valencia and faces an uphill battle to unseat Brazilian Diego Alves for a starting spot.

"My understanding is that the whole squad starts from scratch," he said.

"I can't imagine someone of his stature and coaching ability would hold it against me that I'm away with the national team and not working with him from the outset.

"If that was to influence his decision then it'd be a bit harsh."

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is watching closely, particularly with Mitch Langerak in good form for his German second-tier club Stuttgart.

Langerak only arrived in Jeddah on Tuesday after completing his club duties, meaning Ryan is tipped to start in goal at the King Abdullah Sports City, where he knows he needs to perform well to keep his position.

"It's similar to my club - one bad day can be enough to lose your spot," he said.

Ryan is in no doubt to play despite reports from Spanish media suggesting he was to miss an extended period due to a knee strain he suffered in a freak training incident.

"Some days you see some things come out (in the media) and you can't help but have a bit of a chuckle," he said.

"It just adds to the passion of it over there - everyone wants to know every little detail and trying to be the first one to break stories. (But) it's where you want to be."

Ryan has described his time at Valencia as a "rollercoaster" - he's been in and out of the team and often, like many of his teammates, the target of abuse from the club's obsessive and passionate fanbase.

"It's pretty hard not to carry your football life around with you every second of every day at a club like that," he said.

"With social media these days it's being more and more amplified in every aspect.

"And rightly so - when a team's not doing well they're there to vent their frustrations at 2am or 3am in the morning when we're returning from a defeat away from home somewhere.

"I didn't realise how much a fanbase can have an affect on a club. They've got a lot of power."

Adriano’s Pellegrino wants to give SA football stars a shot at playing overseas:

Adriano Pellegrino playing in Thailand for Nong Bua Lamphu

ADRIANO Pellegrino’s concern for South Australian players’ limited opportunities to become professionals at home has sparked an ingenious plan to give these players some hope.

Pellegrino and a group of partners have hatched a real life search for a ‘football superstar’ which was a FOX8 TV series.

The original Adelaide United midfielder says Australia not having a professional competition beyond the A-League is a travesty but he has plans for locals chasing careers in the game abroad.

Pellegrino, 32, has called on his own experience searching for pro contracts in Greece, Cambodia, Malaysia, the US and Thailand after playing in the NSL and A-League

He has set up a company — Rept FC — asking for SA players to trial locally before trying their luck in Thailand where four league competitions are on the hunt for good Australians.

Pellegrino currently plays for Nong Bua Lamphu in Thailand’s second division.

“I started this up after having three and a half years in Asia,’’ Pellegrino said from Bangkok.

“A lot of (Australian) players come here but don’t get led in the right direction and they don’t have the right pathway and not given a true opportunity to shine.

“The concept is for the player to have a 100 per cent opportunity to show himself in front of coaches and during the right time of the year where coaches are looking for players.

“It’s an opportunity because next year in Thailand there’s going to be three divisions and a super league and every club can have five foreign players.”

“This is more for players in the NPL and I really feel some can play in the Thailand premier league and other in other divisions.

“It’s about presenting players from SA to Thailand at the right time and this is coming up because it close to the end of the season here.

“Rept FC does not operate as agents, we’re making sure players come here and they’re going to play and show what they have got.

“In the NPL it’s semi professional and here it’s professional and players can earn a good living tax free.”

Pellegrino said that open trials will be held in Adelaide in conjunction with Andre Meyer who was a former official with Indonesian football.

He said players will need to meet certain criteria before offered trials.

Successful players will then train and have educational sessions about survival in Asian football for six weeks in Adelaide.

“We’ll then fly players over to Bangkok, we’ll take care of them and they’ll have training sessions and trials,’’ Pellegrino said

“They have state of the art facilities and we’ll train and have two games in that week.

“In those games there will be scouts from clubs all over Thailand looking for talent and we know this will be the best opportunities for players from SA.”

Thats a really good initiative from Peller's

5 foreign spots in each team across 4 tiers of Thai Football opens a lot of doors for NPL players not quite ready for the HAL to test themselves

What's the difference between this and "Football Superstar" that used to be on Fox?
My interpretation from the article is that its NOT a television program, but an initiative to select players - then prepare them technically & mentally for the Asian system.

To then take the selected squad to Thailand where they'll be assessed by a large network of Clubs/Coaches/Scouts across the 4 divisions in a number of trial games.

I never saw him play but was told he was a massive prospect.
Maybe he didn't pass backwards enough for Mossy?
