Jedinak had a shocker. He scored a 4/10 rating after giving away a stupid penalty after grappling with a striker.
He then nearly conceeded a second after giving the ball away in the defensive third but they hit the post.
Palace still went on to lose 2.1

Australia defender Sainsbury played a full game for his new Chinese side Jiangsu Suning as they opened their group stage campaign with a 1-1 draw against 10-man Binh Duong.

Alex Teixeira - who produced this sublime piece of skill, Ramires and Jo all debuted for Jiangsu, the trio among a host of big-name players to have moved to the Chinese Super League in recent weeks - but they struggled to click against their Vietnamese opponents.

Jiangsu had not been in competitive action since the Chinese FA Cup success against Shanghai Shenhua in November and, despite leading through Ji Xiang 13 minutes in, Nguyen Anh Duc equalised from the spot before half-time.

Amini rejects huge offer from China:

Denmark-based Australia youth international Mustafa Amini has spurned a staggering $5 million offer to join the money trail to China, opting instead to remain in Europe “because it’s the home of football”.

While fellow Australians have been flocking to the Chinese Super League for the forthcoming season, Amini decided to stay true to his dream of carving a career in Europe, insisting opportunities in Asia can be grasped later in his career.

The Randers midfielder is preparing for the resumption this weekend of the Danish Superliga season after the winter break and said his head was never turned by the three-year deal, despite the vast sums on the table.

“There was an offer from China, and you can see everybody is heading there, from Australians to big name players from all over the world, but I am still young and have time for all that,” the 22 year-old said.

“My ambition is to play in Europe as long as possible and break through for the Socceroos. To be honest, I wasn’t really temped by the offer because I am loving my time in Europe and still have so much to achieve here.

“In a development sense, I feel it’s going to be much better for my career to stay here and learn and grow as a player because Europe is the home of football.

“Of course it’s great to go to China - collect the money and play against some of the superstars that are signing there.”

"But my main is to continue to play for Randers, get as much game time as I can and hopefully get the nod from Ange Postecoglou with the national team.

“Europe is where football is at - you can’t find the overall quality of talent anywhere else. The big leagues like the Premier League, La Llga, the Bundesliga and Serie A are competitions you dream about as a player."

With Socceroos Trent Sainsbury, James Troisi and Ryan McGowan joining fellow internationals Matthew Spiranovic and Tim Cahill in the CSL, Amini said he can see both sides of the equation.

“Obviously everybody has to make their own decisions - there can be a life changing opportunities to be had and each player has to weigh things up," he said.

“But I am happy where I am. A lot of people are watching the Danish league and there is the chance for me to progress.

“It’s only my first season here and I have a long way to go yet. A lot of people might say 'ok it’s only Denmark'. But it’s a very tough league."

Amini's agent, Sydney-based Buddy Farah, has a long history of brokering deals in China, having taken Mark Milligan to Shandong, as well as plucking players out of Serie A and the Bundesliga over the past decade.

Farah knows only too well the temptations of the money-laiden CSL but he echoed Amini's sentiments.

“In Musti's case it has always been about succeeding in Europe first and the riches will arrive at the right time," Farah said.

“The approach from the Chinese club was meant to sweep us of our feet as it came with a big bang – but the boy has a lot to tick off before he looks in that direction.”

Sixth-placed Randers' season resumes against fourth placed SønderjyskE. Amini will be sharp after his involvement in a number of friendlies after returning from the Olyroos' failed bid to qualify for Rio 2016.

“I’m just raring to go now - it’s been a long off season,” he said.

“It was disappointing (that we didn't qualify for the Olympics) and we do have to look at ourselves in the mirror as it wasn't good enough, but we were missing seven starting players and that made it tough.”

Ryan in action as Valencia romp through in UEL:

Australia goalkeeper Mat Ryan played a full game as his Valencia side coasted into the last 16 of the UEFA Europa League by thrashing Rapid Vienna 4-0 at the Ernst Happel Stadion to complete a remarkable 10-0 aggregate victory.

The hosts were faced with a near impossible task of overturning a huge deficit from the first leg, but produced a positive start as Maximilian Wober tested Ryan.

Valencia, though, responded and broke the deadlock on the hour as Rodrigo chipped the goalkeeper before Sofiane Feghouli latched onto a throughball from Danilo to make it 2-0 after 64 minutes.

Pablo Piatti added a third on 73 minutes, scoring from Feghouli's pass into the penalty area, before defender Ruben Vezo headed in a late fourth.

Matt Sim played for the Drive bys in 2nd half and had a shocker. I think he touched the ball 4 times and lost it 3 of them. He even kopped a spray off one of his team mates.

Reddy was the keeper in the same game.

I'm not commenting in any way on whether we should or should not have sold Matt Sim. But it has to be hard running out for the first time in 3 months (not sure - just an estimate) and coming on most of the way through the game...a difficult situation for anyone.

Sorry wombat, but this thread is dedicated to the cream of the Mariners crop... please do not sully it with talk of Reddy and Sim :naughty:.

Maybe we should start a toilet thread for discussion of those type of players.

Socceroos star Sainsbury making waves in China:

Australia may have found an unlikely ally in the fight for a spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup after star defender Trent Sainsbury was entrusted with an added responsibility at his new club in China.

Sainsbury, 24, is playing for Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning who are coached by former Chelsea and Romania defender Dan Petrescu.

Petrescu, who knows a good defender when he sees one, is a big fan of Sainsbury's qualities and he not only has rewarded the Socceroos stalwart with four starts in the club's four competitive matches so far this season but also made him the leader of the line.

While star Brazilian imports Alex Teixeira, Jo and Ramires are expected to run the show in an attacking sense, Petrescu wants Sainsbury to be the guiding light to his younger and less experienced defenders.

This will be music to Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou, who would welcome another leader in the team with open arms especially when the national team negotiates the final phase of qualifying for the World Cup in Russia.

Who knows? We might be dealing with a future Socceroos captain here.

"I've had to be on my toes for 90 minutes and lead the defence in every game," Sainsbury said, as he prepared for the weekend league game against Yanbian.

"We have four Brazilians in charge of the attack and I'm the foreigner in charge of defence so it's all extra pressure on me.

"I've done more screaming in four games here than I did in two years in Holland.

"This should help my game, definitely. I'm at the heart of the defence and can see everything in front of me so my communication has to be on point.

"Players are counting on me to be their eyes in the back of their heads. That works for both club and country. I like the role of leadership on a pitch, it's something I have to work on.

"Having said that, from my short life experience I know that it's not what you preach that counts but what you produce.

"I'd like to think that my performances warrant a selection in the Socceroos team and I just hope that just because I've come to China I won't be overlooked."

Sainsbury has fitted in nicely at Jiangsu, who play in the city of Nanjing, and is finding out that going to China with an open mind is paying dividends.

"To be honest everyone said it was going to be a culture shock for me so before I'd even arrived I was already mentally prepared," he said.

"The country is decent. My partner and I have found some nice places to eat and figuring out all the little bits and bobs to buy to make life more comfortable and the advice I got from some Aussies I spoke to has made it easier."

Sainsbury is full of praise for the facilities at Jiangsu, which is hellbent on challenging Guangzhou Evergrande for the honours.

"The stadium is very new and modern and the training facilities are not bad either. We'e got fenced-in fields," he explained.

"The gym is of a good standard but for me the biggest thing is that they have a good medical staff. They have brought in experienced Croatian physio Zoran Rajcic.

"He's a very good physio who understands a player's body and the mentality of European players and what we have been used to in the past. Plus he puts strong pressure when doing massage work which i enjoy ... if it ain't hurting it ain't working.

"The people at the club helped with basically everything. I have not had to stress myself too much about organising anything which is always a plus."

Sainsbury is delighted to have played every minute of Jiangsu's matches this season: two AFC Champions League games that yielded a win and a draw, the one-off Chinese Super Cup that Jiangsu lost 2-0 to Guangzhou and the first Super League match of the season against Shandong Luneng that Jiangsu won 3-0.

"It was difficult in our first two games because we literally had the starting 11 together for only one session before our first ACL game in Vietnam," he said.

"Then we travelled to Chongqing for the Super Cup game but once we got back to Nanjing we finally started to click and get our structures sorted out.

"We play counter-attacking football and are hard to break down. Once we have the ball though we can control games because we have good footballers as well.

"Everything went to plan on opening day which was a delight for everyone," he said.

"Now we just need to keep building on this momentum."

Sainsbury is expected be be picked in Postecoglou's squad for the Word Cup qualifiers against Tajikistan in Adelaide on 24 March and Jordan in Sydney five days later.

Wilkinson drafted into Socceroos squad:

A calf strain has seen Hangzhou Greentown defender Matthew Spiranovic drop out of the Caltex Socceroos squad with Melbourne CIty's Alex Wilkinson drafted into the squad.

Spiranovic did not play for his Chinese club team Hangzhou Greentown last weekend with Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou preferring to bring the fully fit Asian Cup defender Wilkinson into the squad for the crucial two matches.

“Matthew has picked up a minor calf strain that kept him out of his game last weekend so it is best that he stays in China to get the injury right and we can bring in Alex Wilkinson who has always done the job when selected,” Postecoglou said.

“One of the advantages of creating depth in this squad over the last two years is the ability to not have to take risks with players who have an injury and we will not lose anything by having Alex come into the squad for these two crucial matches.”

Wilkinson was pleased to be called up after being originally left out of the squad.

“It’s great to get the call up for the two games against Tajikistan and Jordan because they are two very important World Cup Qualifiers,” Wilkinson said.

“It’s always an honour to get selected for the Socceroos and I’m looking forward to getting into camp in Adelaide. It’s a wonderful opportunity for me to impress Ange and play my part against Tajikistan and Jordan.”
