The fact that Mrjda got opportunities pre season while Caceras didn't does not reflect well on LM. I don't believe for one minute that he is injured ATM.

The pre-season games that I saw Caceres played

+1

How many are we talking though? It was our shortest pre season yet with ACL. Its a shame. He has more skill than half of our squad put together, just no finishing. Is he being let go because of attitude & training issues?

his South Amercian Flair.

LOL

Flair without an aptitude to mucking in with his other team mates when hard work is needed perhaps?

I looked up 'Total Football' on wiki and the description it gave about the principle does lean towards what Lawrie is trying to get close to.

I have also spoken to a couple of player ages ago, and when I mentioned to them about their mobility, I can remember them saying how Lawrie - and other top level coaches - want the players to be adaptable to other positions, particularly in a small squad roster, and restrictions on getting short term replacements.

Take into account how the FFA have adopted Dutch principles all along their curriculum and of course, Pim at the helm of the Socceroos, what is all this telling you?

To me, it is saying that Football in Australia wants to adopt a Total Football system in their top domestic league and into their national team structure.

I can recall Jedinak saying he wanted to get more forward, and how he wanted to prove he could attack too.

I can remember Porter shrugging off the RB duties he got lumped with, even though those who had watched him play from boyhood was saying he's a better RM, and possesses a lethal cross.

People like Hutch, who can play forward if need be or out on the LW.

Players like Kwassi who can run box to box, provide an extra man in defence if need be, then if a sub is done, slot into the forward line.

Heff, with the speed he possesses, can interchange into the midfield and wing lines. Can also belt the ball if he can set himself up right.

The days of a specialist may be fast closing.

It may be a case of top coaches like Lawrie realising they need to adopt a Total Football prinicple in their squad selections, so if they get a lot of injuries in say, the midfield, they have forwards and maybe a back or two, who has experience playing there. Or if they are short on forwards, promoting an attacking midfielder who can do the job. And above all else, have players that can get back or go forward and help each other out!

If all this is so, then cameo attacking midfielders like Caceres are a dying breed in Australia.

The likes of Foster may drool at his footwork. But if he stops running 10 metres past the half way and won't get back to help the defence, or goes 'missing' during a match, what good is he to the other 10 players. Someone is not going to get back up, someone will have to run extra.

Coast parts ways with Caceres

The Central Coast Mariners can today confirm that they have reached a mutual agreement with Adrian Caceres, allowing the Argentine born midfielder to link up with fellow Hyundai A-League club Wellington Phoenix.

Caceres joined the Mariners from Melbourne Victory ahead of the 2008/09 Hyundai A-League season, and heads across the Tasman with the clubs best wishes.

Adrian came to the Mariners with high hopes from Melbourne, and while things may not have worked out quite how he or the club would have hoped, we certainly wish him the best of luck in what is a great opportunity for him.

Over the past couple of weeks Wellington expressed an interest in acquiring the services of Adrian, and in discussions between the clubs it was agreed to release Adrian to them. We hope this move helps him achieve his goal of regular first team football.

We thank Adrian for his contribution to the Central Coast Mariners and wish him all the success with his new club, said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

Ironically, the Phoenix was the opponent as Caceres became the 37th player to wear the yellow and navy in a competitive fixture, in a 1-nil loss in the 2008 Pre-Season Cup at Westpac Stadium. He went on to play 29 games for the club, six of those as a substitute, finding the back of the net on three occasions.

this is rediculously stupid
for my money there was no better player to watch in yellow then caceres on his day...but hey lets keep on playing BigMac on the wing, etc.
Only players in attack doing well is littleMac + Simon

lol
we got kwassie, they got caceres

this is very depressing news- and it must be said, I have now lost faith altogether in McKinna

McKinna- March 2009
"Caceres has the potential to be the best attacking player in the league"
wat a load of rubbish

hope caceres tears us apart next time we play!

just about every team has players that can provide a bit of spark...
we are going to be an absolute bore to watch- still it is laughable that we may scrape into the finals...ROFL

and have a go at me all you want- i dont care wat anyone here thinks, there is no way in my mind that Caceres leaving can be a good thing. He could have been an awesome bench player at worst!
I can think of at least 4 players that should be out before him

Kareem. I understand your dislike about Caceres going.
I have a friend who I sms'd about the news and he was gutted.

However, Caceres came to the club with the potential to take over where Tommy P. left off. He was sick and tired of being a bench player, wanted to play full 90 games.

The quote above you highlighted from Lawrie is true enough at the time. It wasn't a con.

Caceres DOES have potential but he has to be able to put in afull 90 effort. A number of games he started in, he went missing at some point. the play would be on one side of the pitch and he'd be on the other, or forward when play drifted back. He didn't think he may have been needed there to add the extra man or that an extra man there would change the play around.

Which is why people like Hutch got bagged for backpassing. He had no one forward or sidewards of him to pass to. Where was Adrian?

This is now noticeable with McGlinchey being more mobile and involved throughout the game than Caceres was. Hutch and Pedj have options.

Sure, Adrian could swing a game back into the Mariners favour by one touch of brilliance here and a great shot at goal, but the rest of his team mates might have been carrying him for the other 50 odd minutes that he went missing, having a less stressful time away from the centre or centre-left of the pitch, on the left wing or staying far forward etc.

Caceres himself wants to play a full 90 and be a first team regular. But over the time he's been with us, he has been found wanting in that sort of commitment.

He does not want to be a bench player, which is why the move is probably mutual.

Yes, Mrdja and possibly a few others should sit up and realise what is next for them too, but in Mrdja's case there isn't probably another club interested and Mrdja himself may not agree with any offer for his services that comes onto Lawrie's desk, anyway. He also has a rock solid contract for this season from the Mariners, there's no use saying we should pay him out - it would only damage the salary cap for the $$ that oxygen thief is on.

I'd much rather have Kwas. He has flair, maybe not as much as caceres BUT at least he is willing to help out the team by defending and pulling his weight and running for 90 mins...

Don't care how much 'potential' any player has... The entire squad trains and has a chance to earn a spot in a team. The only people qualified to decide who deserves a spot in the matchday squad is the people who are at training everyday.

I'd take a player who works hard for 90 mins and pulls his weight, than a player with a touch of flair who couldn't hit the side of a barn and dosn't track back
