but seriously, we've just blown upwards of $20k on a trip to europe, ACL travel is a real stretch (unless i get a really good paying job *really* soon!).
*shakes head*

With that money i could have built us a nice little roof at bluetongue with supplies bought from Bunnings. Very selfish of you imho

That 1st one in Newcastle is a bit dodgy though
it was a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Its kind of like new teachers being sent to the country to practice on the dead shits before coming back to civilisation

back on to the general thread, depending on results on the 28th March, we could be home and hosed as soon as 1st April (with three games spare).

at present we're here:

Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
AUS  4 3 1 0 6 0 6 10
JAP  4 2 2 0 7 3 4 8
BAH  4 1 1 2 4 5 -1 4
QAT  4 1 1 2 4 8 -4 4
UZB  4 0 1 3 1 6 -5 1

if results work out for us (let's say... 1-0 wins for Japan at home over Bahrain and Uzbeks at home over Qatar) then we're here:

Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
JAP  5 3 2 0 8 3 5 11
AUS  4 3 1 0 6 0 6 10
BAH  5 1 1 3 4 6 -2 4
UZB  5 1 1 3 2 6 -4 4
QAT  5 1 1 3 4 9 -5 4

if we then win against the Uzbeks at home on 1st April and Bahrain draw at home against Qatar, then we're too far ahead of the bottom 3 to be caught. doesn't matter what anyone else does.

Team Pld W D L GF GA GD Pts
AUS  5 4 1 0 7 0 7 13
JAP  5 3 2 0 8 3 5 11
BAH  6 1 2 3 5 7 -2 5
QAT  6 1 2 3 5 10 -5 5
UZB  6 1 1 4 2 7 -5 4

both bahrain and qatar can only get to 11 points from there and the uzbeks 10, so we'd be qualified with as little as 13 points.

qatar at the moment are my tip to come 5th, uzbeks 4th and bahrain 3rd. points are being traded just where we want them, while we haven't conceded a goal.

the leadership of the group will be decided in melbourne on the 17th June, but I think neither we nor japan have a lot to worry about.

i hope this means that pim will worry less about playing tight and instead lets the boys open the throttle a little bit and see what they can do. i certainly don't want us to go into dead rubbers looking to not lose! last night was a great result, but the football was only acceptable in that context. come the world cup finals tournament if we try that on we'll get hosed by quality opponents.

Thanks to some scouting by Henk Duut in Europe, we've uncovered a new central defender. He's even playing in the UEFA Cup already. His name may be familiar to those of you who have been playing close attention.

Harry Kewell! :piralaugh:

TWG: Kewell excels in defensive role

Pim Verbeek take note: if you need an emergency centre-back any time soon, Harry Kewell is your man.

Kewell switched effortlessly from creative force to defensive linchpin, playing almost the entire second half as an emergency centre-back as 10-man Galatasary held on for 1-1 draw in Hamburg in the UEFA Cup round of 16.

The dismissal of Emre Asik for a 54th-minute shirt-tug on Mladen Petric left Gala short at the back, prompting Kewell to volunteer for one of the most surreal roles of his eventful career as the Turks sought to hang on for a precious share of the spoils in front of a largely hostile 54,000 crowd.

With Verbeeks assistant Henk Duut in the stands, Australias venerated attacking midfielder showed theres much more to his game than anybody ever imagined.

An exhausted but satisfied Kewell told The World Game: "We were under a bit of pressure at 1-1 and after the send off and I just wanted to do my very best to ensure we didnt let what we had slip with the return leg ahead.

"I actually quite enjoyed it, I did a lot of talking and really just did what was best for the team. I thought it was the most effective way I could help in the situation we found ourselves in.

"We were under a lot of pressure at times and it was certainly something different for me.

"Im not hoping to make a habit of playing at the back and hopefully Ill be back at the other end of the field trying to score or create goals in the return in Istanbul next week.

Having started the game on the right side of midfield, 10-goal Kewell added: "It was great to get away with an away goal, and under the circumstances we have to be happy with a draw especially as we have Milan Baros back for the return next week."

Gala were left glaringly short at the back following Asiks indiscretion, having last week allowed Portuguese stopper Fernando Meira to leave Istanbul for Zenit St Petersburg.

Ironically Kewell began his Socceroos career as a defender, making his debut at 17 in a friendly against Chile as a left back. He was also initially cast in the same role in his salad days at Leeds United under George Graham, before his offensive qualities became the focal point of his game.

Captain Ayhan Akman put Galatasaray ahead after 33 minutes after a lucky bounce presented him with an opportunity and his drive struck the inside of the post and went in.

Marcell Jansen hit back for the home side, volleying home in the 50th minute after Petric headed the ball into his path.

In addition to the presence of Duut, former Socceroos star Ned Zelic was also at the HSH Nordbank Arena. The man whose skills as a sweeper were much admired in his prime said: "I thought Harry did incredibly well in a role I never thought Id see him play. I couldnt believe how well he handled it."

Kewell, rapidly returning to full fitness following groin surgery, is now eyeing Sydney on April 1 and a game against Uzbekistan which should see the Socceroos clinch World Cup qualification.

"Theres still plenty for us to do, but were very close and we know if we keep our composure were more than capable of doing what we have to make sure we dont waste all the work weve put in to get to the top of the group," said the 30-year-old.

"We have two more home games to come against Bahrain and Japan after Uzbekistan and its a great to be in a position where its all in our hands.

"The sooner we qualify the happier well be. One World Cup was a milestone in my career, even though I missed our last game against Italy. Another would be extra special."

TWG site is reporting that Kool played as a CB for Galatasary and had a great game ... G had a player sent off and Kool was taken from LM to CB and did quite well ...interesting for the WC could he be our defensive answer.
