What is it with us and throwing games, leagues, qualifiers, finals away?

I can't stand the title of chokers being thrown at us. But it's getting impossible to defend.

Absolutely fuming after that. Deeply upsetting loss. Very surprised some thought it was a a good performance. Some individuals were decent, like Duke, but as a team performance I thought it was insipid. I make allowances for all our changes and youth. Sure. But as Arnie said. "This is not a second string side" Yet we played timid, fretful, sloppy, second rate football. Just look at Matty's game as one example. What on earth?

They are an absolute RUBBISH side. With a moronic coach. And we kept them in the game with horrible first touches and even worse decisions. And why in hell in the last ten did Pellegrino decide to drop back in defense after playing alongside Duke all game, giving them the first easy access they had into our front third for the last several critical minutes? Arnie surely didn't tell him to drop did he?

Drives me crazy when football sides lose their discipline at the most critical time and start sitting too deep at the end of matches. At the very least it always invites trouble, and hurts more often than not, HURTS you like tonight. My GOD we missed weemac. Just thirty minutes of him for Pellegrino and it's a completely different game.

Right, just deleted a two paragraph rant on Pellers. He's a Mariner. So I'm biting my bloody tongue. But he's simply not good enough. Makes Sterj looks like bloody Ronaldo. And Caceres, where the hell did he go in the last thirty? We needed eleven on the park second half and he went MIA. And disagree with those rating Morton and Griffiths. Hutch, there was a moment where the team, fell apart. It wasn't subtle in it's approach. We were fraying mentally. And completely unnecessarily. But Arnie for one of the first times in 3 years completely missed it with his subs. And unfortunately you either missed it out on the park or you weren't able to rouse them.

That game was a total utter screwup as far as I'm concerned. Our worst throw away since the ROAR GF, and we've thrown a bloody few away between now and then. Such a bitter taste as losing to those clowns makes me feel like we now don't even deserve to qualify. Which cuts to the bone. Must have been truly horrible for our away fans, and the team watching back at home too. We should have destroyed those muppets. They deserved to be utterly destroyed. Yet somehow we only managed to destroy ourselves once more.

Anyone who knows my posts, knows I'm a pretty philosophical kind of fan and always try to be rational and supportive. But sometime everything we damn well do seems like one more missed penalty. All that hard work, promise and excitement, ending in total pain and frustration and waste, and a loss on the weekend to Ange now on top of that would be unbearable. And unfortunately, it's just the sort of pain we seem so well acquainted with.

Sorry crew. Sorry Mariners. I completely fail as fan tonight.

My only consolation is...

At least we're not Adelaide.

FP,the feeling is mutual mate. I agree with most of it.I would like to add that apart from the players (whole team yesterday), GA was responsible for not finishing these muppets off during the first 20 mins of the 2nd half when we were having comfortable possesion and Ghizou were a disgrace. He should have realised that Ghizou was against the ropes ready for the KO punch. He should have introduced Birnie for pelles instead of Fitzy much earlier and pushed Caceres forward for the kill instead of wasting him sitting so deep. The only time that Caceres pushed forward (first half), we scored. IMO, GA should have started with Birnie on the right, Caceres instead of Pelles and Olly as DM with Hutch. Last night I don't think it was a case of choking. It was a case of wrong tactical and technical decisions by GA.

i never really expected to win with that side. it was basically the side that played MH but weaker. the only reason we beat MH were that they too were awful. this team isn't bad, but it isn't fluid, aggressive, penetrating or, experience-wise, solid enough to deal with good opposition. they beat MH but never would have beaten MV or WSW for instance, or even Perth and so forth.
i wasn't expecting them to defeat a championship team of asia regardless of how flat they were playing. our first team only won by a goal despite dominating.
it was looking good for a while there but mainly due to a bit of luck, a soft penalty and their lack of quality mainly. not that we were bad per se, just nothing much more than a youth team.
i hope that's the nail in contract-coffin for pellers. sorry to say it for his sake but sincerely mean it for the teams sake.

Like everyone I can't see us prospering with a midfielder that can't pass forwards to a teammate.
Muslimovic's goal showed the gulf between the two teams: he pwned our right back and shot superbly.
I was actually delighted by the penalty, not because of Duke's execution, which was poor, but because someone has FINALLY opened a coaching manual and read the page on penalties. Now if we can get a professional footballer who can actually kick the ball skillfully under pressure we will be set.
We needed 6 pts from Guizhou. We won't win another game in this comp, but great experience for all.

Not sure if the Chinese team was really bad or they just worked out the best tactics to play against us?

It looked to me like we had the majority of possession, knocking it around easily between our players, while they just stood back and watched.

But then, most of the passing appeared to be between defenders and back to the keeper, who was put under unnecessary pressure a few times, and every now and then a stray pass from us would land at the feet of one of their players, who could then take off with plenty of space.

So maybe they were playing really good tactics - don't run all over the place making tackles, just stand there and watch us pass it around, because eventually one of those passes will go straight to the wrong team...?

Just a thought.

Hmm FP - Actually, come to think of it, memories of last year show up... Or at least the beginning of last year... We developed this tendency for a while, to play the ball all the way back to Matty whenever the slightest bit of pressure was applied last night.... I'm looking at you in particular Pellers...
A backwards pass every now and then is understandable and certainly, I've been happy to hear even the commentators acknowledge that you don't play out from the back without first reviewing whether it is the best approach, this year. Point being that there's a time and a place for everything, even backwards passes but...
They KNEW they weren't the full team, they would've known they wouldn't be as strong as our best lineup... So why pull back so far at the end of the second half? It was like they tried to invoke the siege mentality of that MV game - every man back towards the box... Only we didn't have Pedj to make those amazing goal line saves.

I don't mind saying that I'm VERY disappointed... We should and could have won this one... Once that is said, it is not often that I walk away with a sense that Arnie has made a really clumsy tactical plan, so I suppose he can be forgiven for a stuff up every now and then... I'm still with everyone else, wtf was that with Pellegrino? If he absolutely MUST play, I think he should come off the bench... At least with fresh legs he's got some advantage...

at least coming off the back of that is the pleasant thought that the bulk of the first team is fresh for sunday

Pellers... what can you say other than make sure he is signed to a five year deal....

FP loved your post ....

Gotta say with a team of kids we needed leadership of the guiding type... ie go there cover that hole etc... I saw a team panic .... roughly four minutes to go Pellers has the ball just outside their box heaps of Mariners players around him and in clear space... happen twice .... twice he lost it and both times it lead to goals at the other end... Hutch cannot do everything ... the other senior players well what can you say... other than they panicked the kids IMO...

On Bernie GA needs to work on his shot on goal ... reminds me of Matty in some ways .. he gets into great scoring positions and then shots straight at the keeper...

God I am not looking forward to a meeting this afternoon... I can just see the choke signs being made...

I know a loss in these circumstances is hard to swallow but it has happened to much better and more experienced teams and on a much bigger stage.
Most famously, in 1999 Bayern Munich, leading 1:0 at the end of regular time, lost 1:2 to ManU in the final of what is undoubtedly the world's most prestigious club competition (UEFA Champions League) by allowing two goals in less than 2 minutes of the 3 minutes of time added on.
You wouldn't have wanted to be a Bayern fan on that occasion.

It has been suggested to me that the reason, and seemingly the only rational explanation, for Pellers ongoing selection is that he is Arnie's love child.

Does anybody know more?

We did quite well with the side we put out and there were a lot of positives (I'm positive Pelle can't play football for a start).
Everyone on here is overly pissed off because we played so dumb in the last part of the game and threw away valuable points but we deserve credit for outplaying their first 11 for 80% of the game.
FWIW I thought they were really shite.

Ryan 5. All at sea.....looked like vukovic and trott's love child.
Morton 6. I can see some quality in this boy. Got mugged badly on the goal and sloppy with his passing at times but showed potential.
Griffo 6.5. A bit agricultural at times but played quite well.
Tesco 7. Solid.
Ando 7. Quite good.
Hutcho 6. Played reasonable anchor role. Showed some urgency and actually had a dig once they scored.
Pelle 3. Not the worst effort in a Mariners shirt I've seen but still very poor. Work rate was good but touch was alarming and decision making was woeful. Bye bye Pellers.
Olly 6.5 mixed bag but did well enough
Caceras 5.5. Showed some nice touches but invisible at times.
Duke 6.5. Worked hard and the highlight was rag dolling that bitch Salley when they had A scuffle.
Fitzgerald 6. Did ok but for some reason is never as good when he starts.

G.A. 5. Didn't handle his subs very well.

Good summary - These comments are the most relevant. I was really surprised with Maty's game. Pellers did exactly what I thought he would. GA missed his subs and/or shouldn't have had Pellers on at all.

Lastly Caceres showed a little laxness with his passing at times - the discipline of keeping focussed as a playmaker for 90 minutes at a higher level may be a problem for him at this stage. That said - he looks to have great composure for the most part.
