Smeltz to the GC apparently confirmed today - and Culina thinks he can do better than HAL (he can)

Coast scores big with Smeltz

David Lewis

October 25th, 2008

SHANE Smeltz, one of the A-League's most prolific marksmen, has signed a three-year deal with Gold Coast United as head coach Miron Bleiberg's jigsaw for 2009-2010 begins to take shape.

But the club's bold bid to bring Socceroos star Jason Culina to Skilled Park is hanging in the balance, with the PSV Eindhoven midfielder given a deadline of this weekend by United chiefs to make a decision on whether he wants to become the club's inaugural marque player on a deal believed to be worth around $1.4 million a season.

United have also dangled the carrot of the captaincy for the 27-year-old who held initial talks with billionaire boss Clive Palmer when the Socceroos were in Brisbane for last week's World Cup qualifier against Qatar.

The capture of Smeltz, a New Zealander who attended Palm Beach Currumbin High School and graduated through the Gold Coast representative programs, is a major coup.

The Wellington Phoenix forward has hit the target six times already this season, having scored nine from 19 matches in his debut campaign last year.

The 27-year-old is likely to team with Hartlepool-based Australian Joel Porter when United burst out of the blocks next year. It's believed the New Zealand international, who also had stints in England with AFC Wimbledon and Mansfield Town, inked a deal with United three weeks ago. He was hoping to keep his decision under wraps with Phoenix keen to re-sign him and Asian Champions League finalists Adelaide United also desperate to claim his signature.

Pacy and powerful, Smeltz has struck 11 goals in just 21 appearances for his country and could find himself at the 2010 World Cup should the All Whites beat the fifth-placed Asian team in a play-off for the right to play in South Africa.

United's quest to net Culina could be thwarted by a possible switch instead to the English Premier League once his contract expires in June amid concerns from national coach Pim Verbeek that a move to the A-League could be detrimental to his stature.

With the A-League season finishing at least three months before the start of the World Cup, United are considering loaning Culina to Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan FC should he sign.

The Coast is also continuing to track Socceroos defender Chris Coyne, who has two years left on his deal with third tier English outfit Colchester United, but has fallen out of favour and is keen to return home.

United revealed they will use The Southport School as their training complex with their administration offices being set up in Bundall.

Bad move for Culina at this stage imo.

At the end of 2009-10 season and after the world cup would be the time for him to come back.

I think NQ are in trouble next year. FFA could have messed up here with this Franchise

To be fair they said that about us :)
Agree with GP here.

I see a lot of similarities between them and us.

I get the feeling that NQ will be quite happy to let the GC have the bling type publicity while they quietly go about the business of assembling a decent squad and gathering local support.

The poor cousins of the Bling neighbours senario will probably work well for them in much the same way as it works for us.

Remembering also that with a salary cap in place the GC outwith a marquee are limited in what they can spend on players regardless of how much money they have.

Two top away trips regardless. :)

You make a good point, I was merely refering to their lack of transfer activity. I'm sure Fergie will use the Mariners model of getting into the community to draw support but if they don't have the players they could be in a lot of trouble.

Jade heads north; more stars to follow
October 28, 2008

JUST months after missing out on a big-money European move, Newcastle Jets captain Jade North finally looks likely to find his way out of the Hunter, with the incoming North Queensland club set to announce him as their marquee signing for next season.

While North, 26, was linked to deals in France, Belgium and Turkey during the off-season, no deal was agreed upon, and he reluctantly remained in the A-League after captaining the Jets to their maiden championship triumph.

Despite initially postponing his European dream for the rest of this season, it now looks as though North may stay in Australia for good after the expansion club put a lucrative deal to the defender's representatives.

However, while North Queensland chairman Don Matheson didn't hide the fact that North would be on a sizeable contract if he agreed terms, he declined to say whether or not it would be a marquee deal.

"Jade's always been on our radar - whether he would fill the marquee player [berth] is not something we've decided on, or whether he'd fit in as a normal squad player," Matheson told the Herald yesterday.

"If I said it was him, it would take the guts out of the announcement, and if I said no, it would make us feel a little uncomfortable in regards to the marquee player that we are talking to.

"We've sent the contract down for the [marquee player] to sign. We would anticipate that will be back in the next few days and obviously once that's done, that will be our first announcement."

Despite Matheson's reluctance to confirm as much, it is understood North will take top billing on North Queensland's books and will also take on a unique role as an indigenous ambassador for the club.

Not only that, but his good friend, former teammate and fellow indigenous player Freddy Agius - who made a tremendous impact with Adelaide United in the NSL in 2004 - is believed to have agreed to make a comeback to football with the new club.

Now 24, the multi-talented Aguis played for Australia at the under-17s World Cup and left Adelaide to play for Sydney Olympic, before returning to his home city and flitting between stints with the Reds and SANFL club Central Districts, where he played in a reserves premiership.

He was involved in some of the Olyroos squads in the lead-up to the 2004 Olympics and was expected to be snapped up by an A-League club, but nothing materialised and he has been largely unheard of since.

Other players believed to have already committed to North Queensland include Perth duo Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Wayne Srhoj, Leicester City goalkeeper Paul Henderson and Sydney FC defender Robbie Middelby.

"We've made contact with probably eight or nine guys and we're ready to submit those contracts through to the FFA," Matheson said. "So there has been signings, but until they're registered, we'll just keep low-key on it. Hopefully, they'll be announced in about a week. We're happy with the boys we've got, but equally, it's fair to say we've missed opportunities as well.

"We may announce them over a two- or three-day process, but the first one we'd like to get across the line is our marquee player. We'd like to create a big bang with that up front, and then announce the others."

At 33, Middleby is unlikely to be in the frame for a big-money deal but os still exactly the type of player Matheson wants to to Townsville. "We identified probably 25 guys who came out of contract at October 1, and Robbie was definitely one at the top of the list of those players," he said.

North Queensland will unveil the club's name, logo and colours at a launch next week.
