Despite the rain and it being the coldest November day in record in Mudgee, it was so good to be doing pre game beers, during game beers (not so good with Hawkesbury Pacific) and lost game beers again. Oh, and the football active as well. Kudos to all those who made the trip.
Probably 1 of the best away trips I’ve done in a long time (aside from the weather). crowd was 1046 btw.

For mine, Ballard, Farrell, Niz, Rowles and Roux all had solid games and put in good shifts.

Of the rest, Ollie did some good stuff defensively but offered little in an attacking sense beyond two well struck free kicks. Beni worked hard but as has been said doesn’t yet look a class above, although took his goal well. Miller was serviceable but probably a bit over-excited and went to ground in tackles more often than is ideal for a CB. Niz did some good work but we get the least return on his talents when he is played in wide positions.

Urena tried to be the attacking pivot and whilst you could see what he was trying to do, not much of it came off. Simmo sadly had about his least influential game in over a season for us and didn’t really have a major impact.

Birraz had little to do but was solid when called upon as expected.

Of the subs, Hatch showed glimpses in combination with Moresche and Tsekenis worked hard to try to impact the game, whilst Goddard didn’t really have enough time to show what he can do.

The Farrell / Beni combo was great to watch. Liked what I seen of Farrell. Their keeper was the MOM, poor Oli just couldn’t get past him. I don’t want to see Simon start in round 1. Scum defence seemed to struggle against the WUN speed so I think we need pace up front and not just Beni.

Farrell was pretty solid, happily surprised with a few moments he had. Particularly a high up intercept before flashing a ball across the 6 yard that Simon didn’t even bother to attack.
if Niz is to be playing on the right I can’t see him keeping Goddard out of the team to be totally honest. I expect moresche to be starting ahead Simmo and with Urena very quickly. Instantly looked more dangerous and some fluid movement when he and Tsekenis came on. Tsekenis could really thrive this season. Looked comfortable out there. And Balard did his job well enough.
storm surprised me the most, looked very professional I really hope he’s consistent with his attitude.

And props to you Syd - train from Gosford to Central, then train from Central to Lithgow and then bus from Lithgow to Mudgee. Real commitment.
Great effort by all the active support fans behind the goals. You guys deserve a medal or definitely should be committed for incurable insanity (especially Pete in shorts). I hope none of you succumbed to exposure.

This was very noticeable to me. I think it is time he resumed the role he played for SFC. We definitely need some incisiveness up front, along with pace, to go with Urena who is a provider rather than a striker.

I hope to be able to watch a replay on tv. A lot of my impressions appear different to others here. Maybe it is more in interpretation of what went on. I was giving the players a lot more slack because of the conditions. Or maybe my brain was frozen.

I look forward to Wombat's take on things. He was in a similar position to me.

Another day at the wineries and eating too much. Weather looks better today.

I wonder what position Niz was playing in the trial against Sydney.

I would suggest try and stick to that lineup and structure as much as possible.

Hopefully we don’t feel pressured to play Urena, Simon, Muller just because they are the senior or $$$, if Teskenis, Hatch are more potent.

You can say Monty is in charge as much as you like but we see so often how it becomes a matter of principle to keep playing players that cost the most money or show glimpses of great things but don’t apply the pressure, work or most importantly goals that are needed.

We must have been watching different games, that did not come over on tv at all.
He is correct. Olli looked head and shoulders our best player. Still had plenty of groan moments but without him that would have been dire.

It was absolutely fecking freezing!!!!! To see Eggy take his singlet off to celebrate the goal blew my mind. The little bloke that tried to run active support a few years was there with a warm jacket but shorts and slides. His legs were purple when I saw him in the second half. He looked like on of those frostbite victims.

There must have been 500+ Mariners fans there which was amazing. Mudgee is an absolutely wonderful little town.

Ok time to offer my thoughts and they and somewhat different to the TV viewers.

It was a toothless display but we got the win. Ams is completely clueless as a ref or was on a bung again.

Birraz.....had nothing to do.
Farrell.......not bad but does not look ready for HAL ATM. Linked up with Beni well in the 1st half. Was cooked in the 2nd half and was hooked at the right time as was looking to concede. Very raw but great potential.
Roux.....did pretty well. Not fully match fit.
Rowles......so good. MOM.
Miller.....pretty good and aggressive in defence. Distribution less than perfect.
Ballard......looks nice on the ball and has good feet but no go forward. Not really the answer to losing Stens.
Olli.....captain's performance. Only player with the gumption to shoot. Aggressive and harried the City kids. A few errors but only Rowles, Niz and Olli looked the required standard.
Niz.......some great moments but got bullied abit and given no protection from the clown pretending to be a ref.
Beni......looked like a baby giraffe at times but is a handful. Put in some great crosses that Matt and Marcos didn't attack. Will only get better and a great finish.
Matty......did some good things but never looked to scoring.
Marcos......had an off day.

We looked better when the subs came on.

Spot on for Farrell. Looks like has a good pass on him but worried me in defence. Could have some Roux moments i feel.

there was a ball in the second half that went up really high and I know it was windy and hard to judge but he looked clueless, was not goalside as didn’t want to get back and seemed disinterested in the ball. He didn’t even get close. Maybe was really tired but that’s the problem. When you are tired you still have to bust your arse to get back. Walking leads to goals conceded.

he had some pretty good moments and looked very good and looked like he belonged but when the A League men come at him and he has to get back to shut down a break i am a bit worried.

looks a really good prospect if we can iron that defensive side out.

Most fun I had in ages. This must what it is like to support Stoke.

As a side note if that Hawkesbury Pacific will be on sale at the stadium replacing the 4 Pines, I am rioting. Dreadful stuff.
