CENTRAL Coast Mariners will today unveil a new strip and a sponsorship deal with the NSW government.
In a huge boost before its first Asian Champions League campaign, which kicks off against Pohang Steelers at Bluetongue Stadium on Wednesday night, the Mariners have landed a deal to highlight the tourism benefits of the central coast in Asia.
NSW Premier Nathan Rees will announce the initiative at Lisarow's Pluim Park today.
It is understood the Government is tipping in a six-figure amount and Wyong Shire Council and Gosford City Council will also make financial contributions.
The new Mariners strip will carry the logo thecoast.cc on the front.
Mariners lost the final five games of the season, was the first team knocked out of the A-League finals and do not have a player who rates anywhere near marquee status.
Even so, a defiant coach Lawrie McKinna is adamant his team of blue-collar workers will not be out of its depth in the ACL.
The driving force behind a Mariners club that has made two grand final and three semi-final appearances in four seasons in the national competition, McKinna knows what his side is capable of against some of the best Asia can throw at it.
His confidence has been boosted by last week's warm-up trip to China where, despite losing both matches, he saw enough to know the Mariners "belonged".
Central Coast lost its opening match 2-1 to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Sainty then went down 2-0 to Shandong Luneng, which is also involved in the ACL.
"It was a huge learning curve for us," McKinna said.
"We got a lot out of the experience, the most important thing is that we know we compete on equal terms at this level. There is no way we will be out of our depth.
"We played some good, quality football, but we were punished with a late goal in each game."
McKinna used the short tour to give all his squad a run, getting the players used to the conditions on and off the field for when they return to play Tianjin Teda in a group match on Wednesday week.
"They handled everything very well," he said. "The food wasn't a problem and neither was the climate. We learned a lot."
Importantly, the Mariners returned home with just one injury concern -- veteran midfielder Andre Gumprecht, who strained a calf muscle and is the only player ruled out of Wednesday week's match.
"Other than Andre's injury, the preparation has been fantastic," McKinna said. "The players are fit and well, including Matty Simon, who was feeling some tightness" after playing for the Socceroos) last Thursday.
McKinna admitted he knew little about the Steelers, which beat the Korean champions 3-2 in a league match on Saturday.
"Obviously they are very strong. They have a couple of very smart imports -- a Brazilian and a Macedonian," he said.
"I believe the Macedonian scored the other night while the Brazilian, Denislon, has scored 27 goals in 61 games and is obviously a danger up front."
Simon got some consolation after a disappointing performance against Kuwait in Canberra last week, claiming the Mariners Medal for player of the season.
The Socceroos and Olyroos striker was also recognised for his club record 11-goal haul during the A-League season, winning the Golden Boot.
The awards capped a meteoric rise for Simon, who represented the Olyroos at the Beijing Olympics last year before winning a spot in an A-League-based Socceroos squad.
