ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

The Socceroos thread.

We had patches in the game that weren't too bad, but since our 10 game winning streak ended we haven't really produced performances that deserve to be in a world cup
Exactly, we don't deserve to be there. It would be embarrassing to take this team to a WC.

The rebuild needs to start now.

Lots of endeavour from the Socceroos but no end product.Japan far superior in technique and speed of ball movement and shutting our players down. Also lots of fouls ,especially on Hrustic. He did turn over the ball numerous times but was targeted. In his defence he was trying to impose himself on the game but laced the necessary speed and support to achieve this. An excellent free kick and a great save by the Japanese goalie.

Stens had a mixed debut. He looked lost at times with the pace and good off the ball movement by the Japanese. However he made some good tackles and brushed aside several opponents when he passed to Hrustic who just shot wide early in the second half.I think Jeggo should have started beside him as Metcalfe was dreadful and not up to this standard and was deservedly hooked with his yellow card and poor display.

I have always liked Rhyan Grant but his time in the NT should now come to an end.He was unable to do much in attack and is vulnerable to fast and skilled attackers( no shame there) but Atkinson's time has surely arrived.Karacic is also in the mix for RB spot( and maybe Lewis Miller up the track).

Joel King was tentative and like Grant could not help in attack as he was concerned about his immediate opponent. His defensive work was not too bad and I am loath to be critical of a young player against an excellent team.Farrell with more game time and experience( and improving in his passing and crossing) could be a challenger.

Sains also found the speed of the Japanese difficult but did defuse many dangerous situations. Some of his passing was poor and he could not venture upfield often because of the danger from the Japanese attackers. The Japanese cleverly mixed up their attacking forays with judicious use of the long ball and using triangles to work through our midfield.

Degenek was solid and efficient.Mabil worked hard but I think Folami should have replaced him after the hour mark though Mabil does his defensive duties more diligently.Boyle showed good attacking intent but was often isolated and also was give heavy attention from the defenders with lots of sly fouls. He faded in the second half but after the first ten minutes of the second half our attack was blunted.

Dukey put himself about but should have scored with the header .He won quite a few aerial duels but when he flicked the ball on it was invariably to an opponent.Tilio made one terrific run through the heart of the Japanese midfield and should become a fixture in the team.He was absolutely skinned by the Japanese player for the second goal but the the whole defence was transfixed by that player and Ryan made the error from the ensuing shot.I felt sorry for Ryan who actually was our best player on the night but was visibly upset after the game -the game was already gone when the second goal was scored so his error did not really matter but as a professional he would have been devastated.

Against the Saudis give the younger players a start-Tilio,Folami,Genreau and Atkinson and persevere with Stens and King. Also play Daggers up front or at least give him a good time on the park.

If it is any consolation Italy lost to North Macedonia and have failed to qualify-we still have a very slim chance.

Stens and Metcalf were right on top of each other way too often and had no connection. That first half did neither of them any favours. Jeggo worked much better with him and perhaps Jeggo was able to better read how to fit in with Stens. Either way it was a massive ask for a very green CM combo against a quality side.

Put Risdon in the mix too.

Joel King
Thought he did reasonably well. Should have gone with the man for their first goal perhaps but certainly didnt embarrass himself.

This. There is no value in playing Grant, Duke, Boyle, etc.. they wont improve or get more chemistry with a disrupted team. Let the kids stand up in a big occasion and stake their claim for a play off spot.

Fornaroli came on at a difficult time so made little impact as the Japanese were overrunning our midfield.Macca had almost no time on the park nor did Folami so their contributions were negligible.Jeggo should have started especially with Stens making his debut. To be fair to Metcalfe Arnie thought him and Stens would have provided the physicality to counter the Japanese attackers but at this level both were too inexperienced to handle players with superior technique, speed and passing.

The Arnie haters are out in force and in this second round of qualifying games some of his selections and substitutions have been mystifying but our playing stocks are low and any coach including Hiddink and the much revered Ange would have been hard pressed to make us more competitive.

We were talking about this on the way home - who wants the job with no WC? Screams Staj - blood youth, be hard to beat, grind your way through games
Shame it wont happen
I reckon that relationship is irretrievably broken.

No one currently employed or with higher aspirations will want 1 or 2 games and we shouldn’t rush a longer appointment that can shape our next cup cycle and generation of players.

Agree, Arnie stays for the remaining games and then back to the drawing board.
