So you would forgo results as long as your team play 'beautifully' ?

In a bygone era, it was the club hallmark of Everton, Spurs, West Brom and West Ham, and it is the club hallmark of Arsenal and Ipswich now. And Forest were always an attractive side under Clough, and it worked wonders. People love teams like that, sides that play attractive, attacking football have always been the most popular in history- as opposed to those that played ugly, dour, defensive, "not lose" football.

Our so called 'long-balls' are realistically balls that are played from just inside our own half by the the likes of Boogs, Jedinak and Chicken when he's at RB.

They're either hitting strikers in and around the box or to space on the alternate side of where play has just occurred i.e diagonal balls aimed to the corner regions. Boogs and Jedi love 'having a look' and then 'aiming' these in, far from the hoof's from deep within your own half, let's call it the back 3rd, that DO! generally constitute a 'long-ball'.  :headbutt:

Everton, Spurs, West Brom and West Ham

Ah yes, the over achievers of English football.

Everton played that way in the late 60's. Moyes' football is nearer Bolton than the school of science

Spurs just pretty but pointless.

West Brom try to play attractive football and are a yo-yo club

West Ham - When you are coached by Ron Greenwood and have Moore, Peters etc, its not too hard to play nice football - saw a lot of long balls up to Geoff Hurst mind you.

Well I was referring to how they played back in the day. Also consider the West Ham side with Brooking, Devonshire, etc.

Alan Buckley got Walsall and Grimsby playing attractive football with little money, and to get them where he did was no mean feat.

I really like how the Mariners are playing at the moment.
We going to score a bag of goals. Other teams can try in vain to stop us, or they can try to score more. Exciting and by no means ugly football.

A realistic lineup without injuries could be:-

Danny (U23)

Smitta (U20) Boogs (U23) Wilko(U20) Sonic (Socceroo Reserve)

Elrich (Socceroo) Mile (Socceroo) Caceres

Matty (U23) Sasho (Socceroo) Nik (Socceroo)

Redders U20
Dyl U23
Pedj U17
Owens    U20

If that is a blue collar team then it seems (since there are so many Aust reps) to be reflective of a blue collar nation.

The long ball discussion has been and gone in this thread, and I agree with the general consensus - we don't play hit and hope long ball to a scrum of strikers; we do play long passes forward, but no more or less than every A-League team.

IMO the more significant feature of our play compared to A-League teams is the direct tempo at which we play.

Whether it's a long pass, or three or four short, sharp, accurate interchanges, we tend to play at a monotonous pace of 'go forward at all times'.

I'd argue that that's a differential between us and some other teams such as Newcastle, Sydney, and Adelaide who at times pass backwards to settle, retain possession, switch up the tempo.

At the moment we're basically bashing goals past the opposition at a rate of knots so it doesn't seem to matter, but if you look at matches like Wellington 0-1 and the two 3-3 comebacks, a more intelligent, controlled game may have brought more reward.

For example, it's clever to have settling periods of clean possession at the back if you've just been under the pump, and it can pay to pick your moments a little bit more selectively going forward to avoid getting exposed on the counter.

And I'd make a Cockerill-esque point in that the Coastie attitude does relate to this - in Bay 16 you do hear groans and moans if there is one or two passes backwards ("go forward" "get it up there" etc).

And I'd argue that we do need to take Adelaide's lead in working out where 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are rather than 4th all the time in Asia. In tough, foreign conditions you do need to control the match.

I'd be interested to hear people's thoughts on that?
