Yep. I suppose my point was that D-Mac is playing pretty well and brings other players into the game. Matty is great because of his hassling style of play which creates goals from nothing but D-Mac will never be that type of player, don't think he has the speed or turn of pace.He is more of an old fashioned type of forward, holds the ball up well, big, strong and will score if supplied with plenty of chances. Agree that

Am I the only one who doesn't care if the strikers don't score...

I'd say thats quite likely ;)

I agree to a degree, and don't think D'mac or in the last two games Kwassie can be said to be performing badly, they've been solid. But no, good hold up play is not enough, strikers need to score - preferably a bagful, but if not. at least a few regular goals.

Goal less, 11 games into the season is not something any striker would be happy with either.

Found this on the SMH website the other day;

http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/football/a-league/mariners-keen-to-lure-phoenix-marksman/2009/10/29/1256405474201.html

CENTRAL COAST Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna admits he's made an official approach to Wellington Phoenix about in-form Englishman Paul Ifill, but remains pessimistic about the chances of signing him.

Ifill, 30, is suddenly in big demand after a string of impressive performances for Wellington, and apart from the Mariners it's also believed North Queensland Fury have made inquiries. The former Crystal Palace and Millwall forward is one of Wellington's highest-paid players, and it's expected the Phoenix will make an improved offer to keep him at the club for at least another two seasons.

McKinna admitted he was among the lengthening list of admirers, saying: ''It's true we've sent a letter in [to Wellington], and we'd definitely be interested, but I doubt we can afford him. He's a big, strong lad who gets stuck in, but he's also got that bit of pizzazz about him.''

While McKinna's focus remains on matters at hand, the entry of a new Melbourne team into next year's league has brought forward the horse-trading period, and most clubs are frantically trying to re-sign key players to head off the threat provided by the A-League's 11th team. The new Melbourne team is believed to have made an offer for Mariners defender Nigel Boogaard, but while the former youth international is unlikely to head to Victoria, it's also believed he's headed out of Gosford after this season.

McKinna, meanwhile, has asked the football community in Canberra to get behind the Mariners for tomorrow's match against Adelaide United despite the disappointment in the national capital about missing out on an A-League licence.

For the second time this season, Central Coast are playing a ''home'' game at Canberra Stadium, but it's the first time they've been back to the ACT since the locals lost out to Sydney Rovers in the bidding war for the A-League's 12th licence.

''Obviously, they'll be disappointed, and I understand that, but while they've not got the licence now, who knows what will happen down the track?'' McKinna said. ''From our point of view, we're hoping to get the fans in because the players always appreciate the atmosphere. From their point of view, it's important the punters are there as well. In terms of getting a licence long term, Canberra needs to get behind the A-League.''

Pre-sales have exceeded the match against Perth Glory early last month, and with several hundred Mariners members scheduled to make the trip south, and Canberra United involved in the W-League curtain-raiser, officials are tipping a crowd of more than 7000.

McKinna might promote Pedj Bojic off the bench, and striker Nik Mrdja is likely to get a recall after scoring a hat-trick in the youth league last weekend.

Over to you for this one

Ah but I would love some sort of fan Q&A relationship with the club.
Fans get to submit questions, then vote, and then the mods VET and submit the top ten questions to be answered to the best of their ability by the club.

Won't happen. But would be awesome imo.

well from cockerills recent article, we are 200k under the cap and 2 places short of quota,
says two things, we MAY be able to afford marquee and our squad has immesurable depth to the rest of the leagues teams

Yeah thats right jerome.

It also speaks of the fact that Lawrie doesn't make signings for the hell of it.
Knows his players. knows what he wants, and refuses to sign someone unless he's convinced they can do a better job than those he already has.

Hence we have never suffered a Jardel or the likes...

Do we really need a marquee?
I thought one of the benefits a marquee was supposed to give was "bums on seats". How have the current marquees fared in that regard?
Sackwhacker hasn't even played for his club since they made him one, so the scum have signed a fill-in. How many bums has Vignaroli provided?
Fowler has done a good job for his team, but if you're not a follower of EPL or other big-time football, who the hell is he?
Smeltz the same - scored a shitload of goals so far, but once again the non-football follower doesn't know him.
Aloi$i --- yes, well.... non-followers would know of him, but he's not playing much and not in form when he does play.
Maybe this is a fault of FFA and the clubs for not doing enough of the publicity thing, but it seems to me that the only marquee who achieved anything in this regard was Dwight.
Some of our current Soceroos like Harry or Tim would do the trick, but who could afford them, even if they would come back?
No, I think lets' forget a about marquee and just make sure we get blokes who can play, just like the ones we've got now.

Marquees are not only supposed to put bums on seats, just ask Boogs how much he learnt from Vidmar!  Should the Mariners get a marquee I hope they sign someone who will add value to our club on and off the pitch, not just financially but also helping youth development.

having cap space doesn't tell you anything about whether we can afford a marquee. it does tell you that (assuming we have the coin available) we've got cap space to sign a quite expensive player should they become available.

otherwise if we've got a million dollars sitting around we could go and get a great marquee regardless of whether we've got five cents or 200k left in the cap - that's just down to the amount of cash available.

i suspect that if we're going to get a marquee it's going to be on a similar setup to the aloisi signing - someone will come to the party with a dedicated sum of money to make it happen just like singleton practically 'gifted' aloisi to us.

. do we need a marquee ... no not really but a few weeks ago we really did need someone to score goals

. how does this whole sackwhacker/vignerette thing work ... i though vignerette was signed as marquee or was that just an ego massaging exercise? i had found myself questioning how sackwhackers discipline record could actually be worse in china than at home when i realised it is just that he has actually been punished in china ::)

. smeltz is not the marquee for gold coast (culina has obviously made an impression ;))

. fowler vs yorke ... from a non-football obsessed background ... fowler is a bigger name for me :-\

. i agree. can we please end this obsession of spending money we don't have (ok i don't know for sure but i am being realistic). the club should not be run like it is in the nsl but also shouldn't be run like con the fruiterer's team up north. balance is important and i think we have it about right at the moment
