Semi-Final 14th April, Mariners v Victory

Sigh, I'm not actually the slightest bit excited about getting into the GF. If that's what we're going to bring to the table for finals football, perhaps we should save everybody the hype and excitement and just forfeit next Sunday......
Stay at home then. More tickets for me. Don't know what you want? Is a win a win? or do we have to play total football for 90mins to be approved to play in the grand final.... tough critic.

ha, I will be staying at home - won't be able to make the interstate flight, sadly.
I'm not the first person on here to ever say 'yeah, we won....BUT.........'

Bit daft of Montgomery to get himself sent off.

Mariners too strong for feeble Victory
Another A league season, another Grand Final for the mighty Central Coast Mariners. A game in which they were clearly the better side marred in the final seconds by Montgomery’s red card.
In perfect conditions the Mariners lined up as expected with all the stay-at-homes starting; the bench probably the strongest the A League has ever seen. The Central Coast turned out in numbers and there was a decent turn out for the Victory.
Exchanges were fairly even early on; both teams looked confident and organised. The Mariners began to improve, began to dominate the game with Bernie lively on the right and McGlinchey and Rose exposing Victory on the left. Trent Sainsbury was easily dealing with the little that Victory offered.
In the 13th minute McGlinchey almost scored direct from a corner to the near post. The Mariners were by now warming to the task with Ibini and Bojic running at the defenders, cutting inside and shooting at will, although you rather wished Ibini could be a bit more accurate with his left peg!Rose made a terrific run down the left, cut inside and hit a horrible shot way over with his right foot. What is it with these Mariners players and their weaker feet LOL.
Ryan had little to deal with taking a lone Rojas cross expertly and then collecting Trent Sainsbury when he came for a cross.
In the 41st Minute the Mariners got the goal they deserved – they had taken 10 shots at goal to Victory’s one – and what a nice goal it was! Neat skills from Bernie set up McBreen on the edge of the area. McBreen put his (good) foot through the ball, connected with the sweet spot and hit the back of the net. It was as sweetly timed a shot as you could wish for.

Half time 1-0 and the Mariners in complete control

The Mariners started the second half strongly; Sterjovski brought a save from Coe, Bojic drilled a shot low but wide. They were finding space everywhere moving the ball easily. However, as the hour mark approached they slowed noticeably allowing Victory to have more of the ball; they needed an injection of energy and pace. Arnie responded and brought on Duke for Sterjovski and very soon Duke had a shot blocked after good work from McGlinchey.
In the 68th minute Duke missed a great chance to make the game safe, pulling his shot wide when clear. Sainsbury was making sure the Victory didn’t profit from the Mariners loss of momentum being calm and imperious in his reading of the play. Montgomery was winning all the ball in midfield but Hutchinson was clearly exhausted – surely, with so many good options on the bench Arnie would make more changes? Bozanic? Fitzgerald? But no, he didn’t.
Victory were so lacking in desire that they hardly threatened, Thompson fluffing a chance, as he so often does, and then over-hitting a cross from a good space on the right. Bojic then made a great penetrating run but Bernie’s finish was hopeless.
The game ended almost disastrously for the Mariners as Montgomery got his second yellow; I was spitting chips. Not because of the decision but because Monty’s first yellow had been complete unnecessary – a tackle from behind after losing the ball. So Pedj Bojic, so stupid, and so costly.
The Mariners then panicked and lost discipline giving the Victory a late, late chance to score from a free kick but to the jeers of the crowd they simply weren't good to exploit the opportunity.
The Mariners were much the better side and should have won by a bigger margin. Defensively they were superb and the way the team swarmed the ball carrier was outstanding. I do think Arnie should have listed the energy levels but at the end of the day he has reached his second Grand Final in three seasons and the Mariners their fourth. A magnificent achievement.

I would have made Monty the MoM but the red card spoiled that so I give it to the immaculate Sainsbury who read Victory’s attack like the proverbial book.
Bernie was a real handful for the first hour, McBreen did a lot of hard work and scored a good goal, McGlinchey was all class and the way Ryan kept play moving with passes from the back was a master class.

One game to go Mariners. Just Do It!

Didn't look like it on TV

You been taking drugs?

Way too many offensive mistakes and terrible balls through for my liking, we were uninspired in attack. Victory didn't really test us in defence either.

But then again, nobody took Victory seriously this finals campaign - we could well be a different team in the GF. Just look at what a different team we were against Roar...

Still seething about Montgomery getting sent off!
No wonder players & fans have no respect for referees. A good referee would have have spoken to Monty along the lines of "two minutes to go don`t be silly or you`ll be missing next weeks game", thus winning the respect of the players. Instead he sends him off & earns the ire of every decent fan, player & anyone else..
FFS it was only Milligan.....! I`ve never rated him any higher than a grub anyway.

you're kidding right (re: not being good play)? that was a superb performance!
mv actually played well for them but were completely smothered out by a much better team. Sainsbury, McGlinchey and McBreen had great games, everyone did really. only area for improvement was being more clinical in front of goal again, something we'll need as we will probably have less chances against wsw, but it's barely constructive criticism after a polished, focused and quality performance.

Not at all - it was a stupid, dangerous tackle. You don't get to go in like that just because there's a few minutes left - Monty already had his warning; that was his first card. Only one person to blame for that - we probably should have picked up a few more in the first half.

If he had just spoken to him instead then he would have lost the respect of the Victory players for not protecting them, not having the balls to take discipline on a dangerous tackle or being weak just because the game is nearly over.

We were excellent and everyone was switched on for this game.

Ryan 7. Looked switched on and played sweeper role nicely.
Rose 7. Dangerous tonight.
Pedj 8. Brilliant. Irrepressible.
Dutchy 8. Classy.
Tesco 8. Top game.
Weemac 7.5. Didn't come off for him tonight but our most dangerous and probing player.
Hutcho 8. Really good game tonight.
Monty 8. Excellent game. First booking wasn't even a free kick for mine.
Bernie 7. Did some brilliant stuff.
Sterj 7. Solid and dependable.
Macca 8. What a goal. What a workrate.

Hard to separate so many excellent performances for MOM.
Points to Pedj, dutchy and tesco. Bonus points for hutcho and Monty.

Surpised that Crowd figure was not higher. It seemed right form the get go with parking we were on track for 12k. Not surprised by all the delusional whining (mainly on 442) that's happening again though.

Only a few hundred tards, so a little over 10k. 10K was my pick. Sunday is sunday on the coast. The sooner everyone gets over there delusional "what we should get" figures the better.

Speaking of delusional? Cap'n? What the hell? Strangest posts I've seen you make by a long margin. Genuinely confusing. Atmosphere was great today. We played some outstanding football. Better than any other team in the HAL plays. and won with a very high quality strike. Making even more history and nothing less than this great side and coach deserves.

I'm utterly stoked to be going to another GF. Why on earth wouldn't you be? Because the best supported club in the league MV, get .5% of their population to their home final, and we get 3.5% of ours to ours?

Congrats to everyone. And I'd like to make a special mention of our Captain John Hutchinson today. Terrific game, and was backing up on midweek too. His story is quite the story. Foundation player. Suffered the agony of three lost Grand Finals. Now going into his fourth, and likely his last, as captain. Truly awesome stuff.

They think Wanderers are the fairy tale story still waiting to fully unfold, yet over look the even greater Australian football story which has been years in the telling. as the against all odds side will once more battle for the A league's elusive top honours.

f**k the haters. Time to be champions.

Television doesn't tell the story Gus. Victory pressed hard, and yet again and again we were composed and dominated. The Tards actually played well. FAR better than last week. But it still wasn't nearly enough. We were and are just too good. They didn't hit their heights in attack no. Because we defended too well. Honestly if you could have seen the constant work on and off the ball, by all our team (well in Sterj) I'm sure your opinion would have to be different. Could we still be better in the front third? Yip. So let's hope it all comes together for the final.

Forum Phoenix - which post was the strange one? Haha

I was disappointed with the crowd figure for a semi - but on screen it also looked like a lot of people missed the start, was this the case? It seemed to increase a bit as the match went on.

Our defence was good, though it's hard to judge against the Victory tonight. We didn't let much through and our numbers got back really well which will be essential against WSW.

I just found our attack frustrating - our passes, especially in and around the box, were off the mark and seemed to go to Victory way too often. They were trying to create chances and trying to link up, it just sorta seemed like something was a bit out of sync with our boys up front.

These days I reckon a GF should scare the bejeezus out of any CCM supporter - but I remember how, when we played Roar in the GF, everybody wrote us off against the greatest sporting team in the history of the world (apparently), but we turned up with real fire in the belly and tore them up, just got screwed over by one refereeing decision that is on par with THAT handball in the Jets game.

Jets game we were expected to win and, handball aside, we played terrible (and still only lost the game on a missed penalty and a single, uncharacteristic defensive error). Roar match we were the underdogs and 'won' it, but the referee took it from us with that rugby tackle leading to their equalising goal.

Yeah, I elaborated a little and I don't think our views are completely separate. Our composure in defence is one great advantage, and if we can maintain that in the GF (and I've got no reason to think we can't) it'll help a lot.

We're the underdogs again.

And WSW have every reason to be OVERconfident......

Hah! Good stuff Cap'n. I'm with you.

It's time for redemption my friend. Time to wash away the pain and disappointments of all seasons past and taste glory. Glory of the kind most treasured, where that which has been won, has been the most hard fought to achieve.

Next Sunday is the day we win the grand final and are crowned champions. Believe it. It's coming.
