Exactly. And that makes it doubly hard for other A-League clubs to properly recruit someone from afar.

I reckon the Players Association here ought to be looking at what's been going on with players from overseas and their dealings with the A-League clubs & how they being looked after.

A worrying aspect about Zura's departure is that word will get around.

Depending upon Zura's standing in his home country's footballing fraternity, if there's been a bit of shonky or sloppy business dealings by the Scum towards Zura, it may impact upon the rest of the A-League in the eyes of those who end up believing that Zura was hard done by.

Add Jardel's situation last year, where there was squabbling between GVE and Con about whether to play him or not, and that's another piece of anecdotal evidence that some footballers in the South American region may take notice of.

You can't compare Zura or anyone to Jardel. It was blatantly obvious to everyone with football knowledge that Jardel was going to fail as he was in no shape physically or mentally to compete professionally anymore.

Now firstly, Newcastle will find themselves on the nose with a few players' agents in that region IF THEY HAVE DONE ANYTHING WRONG to either Zura or Jardel (late payments, slow to process family visas etc...). But secondly and more importantly to me, the other A-League clubs may find it harder dealing these agents.

It is a market that other clubs would probably like to venture into and see what type of player they can attract and it might become a millstone around their necks to keep explaining that Newcastle are, well, Newcastle and certainly not them to prospective players and their agents.

How would we all like it, if the A-League became as suss, in the eyes of many South American players, as many of us view the Romanian League after Thwaite's dramas there?

Keep screwing around the players, or use poor recruiting techniques and throw players to the wolves when they don't perform to the level you thought they had, and word will get around. Just saying....

One of the problems is that people expect far too much of players on the basis of their nationality, or the presumption they're going to be some kind of fancy dan flair player who will dominate the league. It's difficult to do it here, in all honesty.

Rodriguez showed that it can be done- he has a decent record in Colombia and pretty much everywhere he's been and is a full international to boot.

We all saw what a joke Jardel was. But my point is that when he speaks to his home country's press Jardel is not going to say he was a fat out of condition f**ker on the field. He will say that they didn't give him enough gametime or some other BS. It will go into the local record, players will read it and either think, 'shit they signed that cokehead' or 'they didn't give Mario a chance and put him back on the gear through the stress of it all'. Either way, it gives a bad impression and one that sticks in the mind of players.

That recency effect comes forward if a players' agent mentions a club in Australia, and they are then less keen to come here.

Zura can play the local media game too, if he's well known enough and people want to know why he's back home.

Now, you've mentioned having high expectations, but both of these players were marquees and yes you'd expect them to win games for the team, and posses superior skills.

If you have a club like the Jets proudly announce this player as a marquee and boast about the dominance this player will have and his impending impact upon the A-League, etc. etc., then they are doing themselves and the player a disservice, if it is quickly revealed that the player isn't of that calibre (very few are TBH). They built the expectations of the public, with the assistance of a bunch of media who wet themselves at the mention of anything South American, it wasn't our beliefs about the players. But if you keep saying someone is good, sooner or later folks will believe the hype and expect to see that.

Well you look at Jardel's record in the five years prior, he didn't play much football or score many goals. So what made anyone think he was going to cut it for the Jets?

Sure, Charlie Miller is a rather rotund player but he has played good football, and played well over the years and evidently is in a far better state of mind than Jardel ever was.

Charlie Miller has health issues (hernia) that curtails his training and his time on the field, which is why he looks out of condition. Mentioned on Fox Sports a million times in the last game (Roar vs Jets).

But he has proven a good player in the midfield for Roar and is very dangerous close to the penalty box with free kicks.

Have no idea whether Miller is a man who has had past issues with substances but Jardel clearly was, and one look at his physique showed he was way out of condition.

Miller also strikes me as still having quite a deal of confidence in his ability, but Jardel appeared quite desperate in his play. Zura was settling down and showing some skill - and he tried hard -, but his finishing was woeful.
