Things have changed a lot over the years, but one thing has remained constant and that is our love of the Mariners. People come and go, some like to post a lot and others just like to read. It's up to you how you participate in the community!

If posting is not your thing, you can interact in other ways, including voting on polls, and unlock options only available to community members.

ccmfans.net is not only for Mariners fans either. Most of us are bonded by our support for the Mariners, but if you are a fan of another club (except the Scum, come on, we need some standards), feel free to join and get into some banter.

He's got no chance 4 rio so why is he wasting his time
Let's see... Playing for the worst team in the a-league, offered a dream gig in a top team in the best Asian league... Still 10+ years in his career... I wonder o_O

The J-League is as big as it gets in Asia and they're looking to expand their reach and brand awareness around the Asian region, South-East Asia in particular.
It's kind of like our local Premier League.

Great for Vuka, his career could have gone another way had he not got his ban but we'll never know. Still reasonably young for a keeper so he could still do quite well... On that note, J-League is, as mentioned above, the EPL of ASIA. I believe he will do well and good luck to him, was a great servant for us. Also, whilst I don't believe he is much chance for the world cup, anyone with ambition to be the best they can be has to believe they can reach the top. If he thought and acted like he was completely out of contention it would be time to pack it in.

Can play Griffiths at LCB if need, Seip on the right. In this case, my preferred shape is this:

Reddy
Seip Anderson Griffiths Rose
Caceres Hutch
Ibini Kim Fitz
Duke

Decent set up.

I would switch back to 442. But Sim can easily sub if Rosey is injured.

Back 5 remains the same.

Monty for Hutcho.
Kim for Caceras.
Fitz and bernie as wingers.
Duke and Simon as dual strikers.

I'm sick of us being dominated in possession and sneaking a 1 goal win on the back of Liam Reddy saving our arse most weeks.
Try attacking in numbers and you might be surprised how easy it is to win a game.

"Sick of being dominated in position?" Did you mean possession? If so, your answer is to play with less midfielders than the opposition? Is this a request to return to hoofball?

Having posed the questions, a diamond midfield against melbourne's 4222 has been very successful in the past. So for this week only I may be convinced to agree with wombat, go long or down the middle

My starting team is similar to D

Reddy
Seip Anderson Griffiths "Rose or Dim "
Caceres "Hutch or Monty"
Ibini Kim Fitz
Duke

Me I would go back to the old Liverpool system... when you loose the ball everyone get between the ball and goals... and mark the player closet to you with the sweeper free ... when you win the ball everyone move away from the player they were marking into free space and show for the ball.... maybe old fashion but won 4 or 5 European Cups...

Like it Middy. I've never understood how we think we can possibly defend when standing on the wrong side of the player or leaving our opponent unmarked.

Our defence is already largely a 'behind the ball' setup. No sweeper, but we have two banks of 4 that sit deep and slide from side to side while two forwards drive play to one flank or the other and press when it gets to the fullback.

The idea of "when you win the ball everyone move away from the player they were marking into free space and show for the ball" is about as elementary as "try to score more than the other lot". They're hardly going to stand there holding hands with their opponents.

I know we have 2 games before this but I'm travelling to the game and just thought I'd make a bit of a roll call for who's attending.

1 - Tassiemariner (Paul)
I'll be there.
I'll be there. No chance of me missing one of the only two (sans possibility of a finals match) matches the yellow will play in my new home state.
I'll be there with three others.

Hoping we find our mojo before this one or it will be a long trip home.

. hey guys ... i know a couple from the supporters club are also heading down, but have no plans beyond that ... they would love to meet up with any other mariners fans attending

. communication will be difficult (particularly at this late hour) ... but they suggested posting something to the supporters club facebook page if possible to try and reach out and coordinate something

I'm taking four friends along, but none of them are Mariners fans, so we'll probably be in the GA area.

I'm taking my gf, two mates and one of their gfs, we'll be in the Away section. Trying to find my large flag to try to hang up somewhere but can't seem to find it :/

Also weather is looking might miserable down here. Oh boy, classic Melbourne drizzle. Time for some fantastic football.

With Milligan & Rogic out we will never get a better chance to win...

Will miss given Musky is the coach now the Matty S and Musky battle...

Thank you for that most informed observation ... we are lucky nay privileged to have such esteemed knowledge on our little site...

Lets change the word sweeper to having a free man at the back ... lets change side defence to zoneal defence ... Many systems over the years have had slight changes but the bigger changes are the names people use... my very humble observation is the two main changes in football over the years are... First the general fitness of the players ... Second the speed of defence to attack... I recall reading an article by Sir Alex a few years back when he observed a large percentage of goals were scored within 4 passes of a ball when lost by the other side... he said this ability to score from the turn over and the ability to defend the turn over will decide future champions... More recently I would argue the pressure put on the player on the ball has increased..

But again thanks for your kindly and thoughtful words of wisdom...

Milligan is the key here, their system requires extreme speed in transition from defence to counter… they are half as effective going forward without him, but he is also the linchpin to their frail defence

Rogic is an amazing player but not needed as much, with finkler and troisi playing the same role they have midfield creativity for days
