Round 2 v Gold Coast

Agree with TED - ENTIRELY regarding Pellegrino.
And ironically, he looks lazy, but he actually has a much better work rate then Perez.
But because it puts him out of position all the time, he ends up looking lazy when he is walking/recovering and not involved in the next subsequent play or available when we need him most. He was not what we need in a number 10 tonight.

We looked uninspired, unconnected and poor. Dreadful passing. Seriously boys, show some faith in yourselves. We were so negative and Rostyn, by god release the ball quicker!! You all NEEDED to, but Rostyn was the worst offender tonight.

Everything Arnie said was accurate. Which is comforting, except that it was all already my concern leading into the game. Once again we lacked industry and hunger, even Rosie didn't look like he really wanted the ball tonight. Everyone needs to step up and dare to fail again,

Move off the ball, hold it up, take payers on, hit your passes, but most of all start daring to be bloody BRAVE again!
The secret to the Roar if there is such a thing is their unrelenting positivity. It drives their movemnet, fitness, confidence. All of it.

Time to TRUST in your skills again, step up and man up Mariners.

With Love

FP

Oh and FFS please start Bernie next week. 433 sounds good atm unless Pellegrino can quickly learn to ghost, stay central and pick his key moments and passes.

the last three minutes were fantasic
it shows we can take control of the game
GC thought they had it in the bag, but they
forgot we have THE Dutchy

agree with you FP Ref was a shocker
pelle was is no use? yes? will music be any better

or just drop both and go musti

simon and rose were the clear runners and got some great assistance
from berni

thought porter had learned how to read the game and there fore play, but was
clearly shown i was wrong

Plus side - remember people we are no where near full depth squad, and we
COULD have beaten roar and SHOULD have beaten GC with out it so things look up. . .

No other word to describe that apart from SHITE!

It was like the Mariners of two years ago. Dutchy saved the team from being booed of the park which they deserved.

The fullbacks got forward well but their passing and crossing was woeful. Pedj in particular had a shocker.

The Centre backs did ok and Porter did quite well again although some of his passing (bombs) were poor. Fantastic header by Dutchy saved our blushes but he looks more shaky without Wilko alongside him.

Olly and WeeMac tried hard but again their final pass almost never found the mark. Calm down boys its not that hard.

Rostyn had a frustrating game. He was too deep, almost like a third CB but did some good stuff (lovely long ball into corner for Simon) and some nice tackles but his distribution was very slow and at times wayward.

Pelle was very poor. Flat footed and lazy. His movement off the ball was non existent. He had a dig for maybe 10 mins out of the whole game. He was so bad I would have hooked him, put Olly to AM and Hearfield to LM.

Simon tried hard but was let down by his team-mates but should have scored in first half.

Kwas was hopeless and didn't even try.

The team lifted instantly Bernie came on and he must start from now on.

Time for some boots to kick some arses before the season is gone. Musti is needed desperately but most importantly MOVEMENT and INTENSITY are the key words.

Back to basics boys, find your mates feet and support the player with the ball.

Well done to Coasties for a great crowd .

Agree. I was hoping for this or Baird coming in and Simon playing the middle striker as Dibo suggested earlier.

I cant believe he has played 13 games with this team. He was the cause of Rostyn's poor disrtribution and the stagnation of our midfield. When Bernie came on he even ran past Pelle to get to a good spot and recieve the ball and Pelle just stood there and watched him.

I,like most was very disappointed with the game.
In the first half we had probably 60% of the ball yet played 60% of the game in our own half.
The lack of vision & creativity from the midfield was appalling.

Ryan: Looked safe but was never really tested
Pedj: tried hard all game but with no support from the right side it
made his job very difficult
Porter: had a few heart attack moments & looked uncomfortable in
Wilko`s spot
Dutchy: had his moments but doesn`t look fit yet & I think the long off
season may take it`s toll for the first few weeks
Rosey: wasn`t as confident as last season. He only went at the defence
a few times but failed to make an impression
Griffo: Solid in defence but some of his passes were shockers & put us
under pressure
Weemac: worst game I`ve seen him play.I thought he was lucky not to be
subbed in the first half
Olly: Totally lacked any vision.By the time he`d taken his 5 touches
& spun the regulation 360degrees he was lost.
Pelligrino: Even his mum would have been disappointed with that
performance
Simon: Forever trying but needs to practice more than one way to turn
with a defender on him
Kwassie: That performance may be ok in China but this is the A-league.He
would have struggled playing against the kids at half time.
Bernie: Looked energetic & exciting when he came on
Hearfield: tracked back well & looked solid.

Over all: a) The crowd numbers were fantastic although as many have
said before, with a performance like that, how many will come
back
B) Not having the clock on the scoreboard was a deadset pain
in the arse!
c) Whoever makes the decision to turn the freakin` sprinklers
on before the match starts is an idiot! It affected the match
standard for the fans & the players.
d) The strip looked good
e) There was very little merchandise for sale
f) Sadly the Yellow Army numbers looked to have declined
g) Can`t wait for the next game!!!

I'm an idiot savant without the pesky savant bit
yeh...I was watching the game and i got to thinking that Olly has lost any sort of decision making skills......as for Pedj ..shocker is the only word I can use, I think Chicken was very quiet too...as for Pello, he seemed over excited or something, trying to do too much all at once....and who thinks Kwas shouldn't be starting ?.. let baird and mcbreen start and put bernie and kwas on as subs...of course I could be wrong

What we noticed was that after Gold Coast realised that we were always going to play out from the back they moved well up and pressured us in our own area. They started out by keeping all four of the backline back when we were playing out - which gave us plenty of room. Later they only had one back.

We need to mix it up a bit so that when they push so many forward a quick long ball can be lethal.

Having watched two rounds now, many clubs, including but not limited to us, have really struggled with the long layoff.

i think the fact that our only goal this season was scored by a centre back from the other centre backs cross says it all really!

Yeah had a conversation about this also. ONE BACK, and you have to start playing direct more often.

Agree re sprinklers Style, (And everthing else) is it really worth trying to get the ball to play fast vs having your players fall over all the time?

I'm honestly quite surprised at the strength of negative reaction on here. I really didn't think we were that awful. Could/should have lost, sure. Played like a busted arse? I don't think so.

There's a difference between uninspired/out of sorts and being outright bad. Our final third was poor. That won't be the last time this year, it sometimes happens.

We can't be relentlessly negative every time we're a little bit off. I reckon we need to put the big stick away and think ahead to next week.

I think, for me at least, is that after the Grand Final level and noting the lifting level of the League I am also ramping up my expectations! On that standard, we were awful!

Hard to tell what the problem is... for a lot of the time they were just knocking it around the back and to the goalie... side-side-back, while Graham Arnold was up and screaming at them to pass and move. Didn't look at all like the side that got to the grand final last season. Bozza absolutely ripped in at them, basically saying that half the players didn't want to be out there. Pretty ordinary if that's the case. Hopefully they get their mojo back, and quickly.

On a more positive note - Patrick was bombing some great passes long from the back and finding a player up on the front right wing... obviously nothing came of it this time but wouldn't be surprised if we got a few goals by catching teams off guard like that through the season.

I haven't watched the replay so I haven't heard Bozza's comments. What was evident to me was that Kwasnik was below his usual standard and we struggled to make good on our combination play up forward. Pellegrino isn't a bad player, but he's not got the instinctive no.10 ability we expect to see there.

A couple of times he was caught napping as chances eventuated and evaporated mere metres from him while he was flat footed. It's not laziness (he works very hard), it's a lack of instinct and anticipation. He *is* decent coming from deeper areas and working his way forward into combinations though.

Simon on the other hand works really well when he's got the option of either pushing the line or coming deeper. Weemac and Olly are both best when the opposition doesn't quite have a handle on where they'll be, and when they have a narrow bias they allow their fullbacks to come in to the attack more.

Accordingly, think we can change the shape around a bit to play to the strengths of the players we have fit.

Code:
Ryan
Bojic Porter Dutchy Rose
Pelle Griffiths
Weemac Olly
Simon
Bernie

Porter was doing the same but (being right footed) he was hitting the left side. We're going to catch a few teams there.

Can't agree Dibo. Gold coast were shite but grew into the game as we started to flounder. First 5 minutes we were great and were looking like we would smash them by 3 or 4 then inexplicably we fell apart and then it got worse and worse. Suddenly we couldn't string two forward passes together and players wouldnt move to receive the ball.
It was like watching 10 Butch Wilkins in yellow....side pass, side pass, back pass......in fact Ryans vision and distribution was probably better than any of the outfield players.

Lack of talent I can kop....lack of effort is hard to take. WeeMac and Olly both had off nights but both tried really hard....several others didn't !

Anyways let's get over it and smash the scum.
