Roar Match

Brisbane's most dangerous attackers are Broich and Henrique - Bojic had to face these two and although Brisbane's passing got them to the by line a couple of times only once was Pedj beaten man on man (by Henrique). He dominated play on the right throughout the second half. Agree with the comment about his body shape when he recives the ball but otherwise he was a key player in our win.

I said at the start of the season that I hoped Monty would be as influential as Patrick and he is living up to that hope. Not only an efficient no nonsense ball winner but it is the way he reads play and sees danger before it can develop; his defending was always on the front foot, right on the edge of Brisbane's passing game - in previous seasons our defending to their midfield has been on the back foot. It takes a special player to do that.

And I thought Bernie did well - giving us more than Sterjovski by the simple deed of actually scoring a goal! He worked hard, ran at defenders - which defenders don't enjoy - and tracked back continually in defence. Looks like he took a bad knock though so may be in doubt for Adelaide.

Style you must have been watching the girls. Pedj skinned Henrique so many times it was not funny. He basically owned him the whole time he was on the pitch and thus nullified one of Roar's more dangerous players.

Ancient
I was sitting in Bay 10 probably 100m from Pedj in the first half.
From that distance Henrique looked like he was having a picnic with Pedj.
Every time he got the ball he made space for other Roar players.
If Pedj skinned him (as you say) what did he do after that? as I can`t recall to many attacking raids down that side of the field.
It was quite obvious the Roar saw Pedj as the weakness. They attacked that side a lot more than down Rose`s side.

In the second half however, we had a lot more possession & the opportunity was there for Pedj to play forward on a number of occasions.Yet, by poor body shape when receiving the ball, he closed down those options thus negating the opportunity to play forward.

Pedj is a decent defender,he is athletic & fearless. He has the ability to get forward quickly & at times can put in a decent cross.
His weaknesses are his over exuberance, body shape & his fear of the opposition byline.

I`ve watched Pedj play since 1995. I know a little about his game.

Did anyone else think that Ryan's head wasn't in the game last weekend? Even Mrs Atomic commented that he looked half asleep during the warmup. I hope he hasn't clocked off, believing that a move to England is as good as done. I'm not saying he doesn't care anymore, but he may be a couple of percent below what he could be if he was completely focused.

Got to agree with Ancient on this one. Pedj was my MOM.

Good win but not great.

...

Very happy to beat Roar but a bit of a Meh type game.

Y'know how I said a while ago that I like the chess games? Well this was a chess game.

Sit and soak, defend with them in front, don't give them room between the lines to play the deft little 1-2s that have killed us in the past. Recover the ball when we can and use it smartly.

The CBs split when we have the ball and Hutch comes to it - when the ball's in deep positions, we wind up with a 3-3-3-1

Ryan
Anderson Hutch Sainsbury
Bojic Monty Rose
Mikey Rogic Ibini
McBreen

There are lots of targets, they're moving, and when we hit someone in the third line or fourth, there are players immediately moving alongside them. How many times is McBreen's first ball a little square ball to a running teammate?

When we're playing shorter, how often is it that Ibini's or McGlinchey's movement centrally simply opens the channel for Bojic or Rose to go and hurt them?

It's a really neat, well drilled plan that we do every time now, and there are so many different ways that we can play out (even against a high press like Brisbane tried and failed to use in the heat) that we very often are able to get the ball moving forward very quickly.

The stats might suggest that they had more shots but they didn't create more genuine chances. We got people into good spots regularly, we looked very threatening and I thought we were deserving winners. It was a shame that the winner came so late but it was always coming. They had more ball but we were the better team for all bar about 15 minutes of the match.

The fact that we've had Sainsbury walk into the team from the start of the year and perform so well, we've had Sterj transfer across and perform so well, we've had Anderson and Bozanic come in and do terrific jobs *all within the set team structure* tells me that Arnie's doing a very good job with our coaching. It must help so much that we're training at home on the same pitch each day and just practicing scenario after scenario.

The performance on Sunday showed we know what to do against a high pressing, high possession opponent.
The performance against Melbourne showed that we know what to do with 10 men against (I think) the best team in the comp other than us and Adelaide.
The performance against Wellington showed that we know what to do against a well drilled 4-4-2 that is tough to beat at home.
The performance against Sydney showed we know what to do against a side that attacks hard but is suicidal at the back.

We're handling lots of difficult situations, and Arnie and the boys have to take a lot of credit. This weekend, we'll have a different goalkeeper, a different #10, and we'll do just fine because everyone knows their jobs. Top of the table for the first time this weekend.

He looked like he cared a great deal when he sprinted 80 metres to celebrate with Bernie.

I noticed Theo did the same when Murdocha scored. I don't know if that's a good indication of having one's head in the game.

Ryan was down sharply to a ball across the box very early on, and after a header off a Brisbane cross took the ball from his hands he made a great second effort to clear. His distribution continues to be outstanding and he's as calm as you could want. I reckon his head's still in it.

He was slow moving for the goal, but a) I don't think he (or anyone else) expected it and b) even when it came, he would have been unsighted for all the people between him and Murdocca.

Good post Dibo and hard to argue with what you wrote.

I guess we are just going to be the Arsenal (not the flamboyant French team of the past decade or so) of HAL.

I'll keep taking the wins and I'm hoping the return of Olly will give us some pep to go with our structure.

I think Arnie is doing a brilliant job with our squad.

Next weekend is going to be a cracker.

Not as sharp as normal in the last two games....hopefully a coincidence.

Seeing him come off at half-time he was obviously very disappointed in himself. That in itself is a good sign.

On the Pedj debate, Henrique clearly caused Pedj some trouble in the first half, and it's where virtually all signs of their attack came through. But Henrique's that kind of player, you can't just bite in on him, or he'll slip(pery fish) right by. Pedj fell for it once, and too his credit, did not again, but he gave up some space doing so. But in my opinion, this is the way to play him and Weemac who was vey absent in the heat first half (Great second half) needed to get back and double team him, otherwise Monty, but that can leave you exposed down the middle, and as the excellent point made in Dibo's post, make it easier to play between the lines.

That and you have to get stuck into him. Which Monty did :) With one of his many great clean tackles. And Henrique quietened noticeably after.

Anyhow Pedj, an assist for the first goal and a very good game overall I thought. But my man of the match was Monty. I agree with Roy. He's a real asset and had a big impact on that game.

Quite possibly, but it may be because Rose and Sainsbury were doing a good job cutting Ben Halloran out of the game down (his) right.
