Roar Match

so long as we dont try and play too high with our back line we should be fine. the 2 games roar have dominated this season have been counter attacking long balls over defensive lines that are sitting too high

well that was satisfying! Mariners being happy to sit back and let the roar have the ball eliminated their counter attack

berisha is a nut job, he is the cancer that is eating roar from the inside

Berisha was given an injection of valium at half time then he was ok.
Keeps forgetting to take his medication.

Maybe it was just me, but I was too tense to enjoy the actual game. A huge relief we got the points, and I believe we deserved them, but will need to watch a reply to be sure.

How good is McGlinchey? He had a very quiet first half, but his "never say die" attitude got us home!

Comments in Berisha are understated - even the one about him being a cancer eating roar from the inisde - he's much worse than that

A view from the game without seeing the replay.
Thought Pedj was m.o.m, top game.
Shame McBreen got caught up with his feet could have had a couple more towards his 10 goals.
We definitely need Patrick's cool head at the back.
Great goal by Bernie, but apart from that he is not a winger. Why not Bozanic from the kickoff, a much better combination with Rose.
Thought Rogic played very well but only in parts, appeared to be affected by the heat.
Montgomery is a great signing and had a great game. Up there with Pedj.
I really like it when Rose powers forward, he is probably the greatest attacking back in the comp.
Great ball off the line by Hutch. Not the greatest DM but he does end up in the right place at the right time, so often in the last line.

I will be interested to see next weeks line up. I suspect Arnie will move Pele in for Rogic, but suspect a switch to 442 could be in order.

Good win but not great.

I thought the centre backs needed to be a lot tighter and closing down on their goal was a joke but overall we were decent.

Apart from Pedj no one stood out. Rogic showed great quality at times but the most exciting thing was seeing Olly play. He immediately gave us drive that was sadly lacking. Monty was decent.

Very happy to beat Roar but a bit of a Meh type game.

Good crowd and active support was good.

Happy I am.... Monty just a great game...

The first gaol is it just me but if you go back to where it started ... then the pass from Rojic followed by the mistake and then rebuilding the attack is one of the best goals we have ever scored...

Hey guys,
Loving the new looks Adz haven't been on for a year or so.
Great game but i swear people like to whinge for the sake of whinging expect us to play like a top European club pisses me of thats for sure.
I think that we played roar perfectly by sitting back letting them pass it round keeping tight (Zac Anderson is gun i was really impressed with his defending, talking, big strong lad I like him more then Sainsbury TBH looks like Patrick as well hahaha). Arnold is a tactical master when it was there goal kick he would get 3 player (Mcbreen, Hutchinson and Rogic) to mark the defenders and Paartalu Theo had no where to go was magnificent he kicked it out like 3 or 4 times on the full really stuffed there structure they had no outlet . They really didnt have a clear cut chance at all, good goal by Massimo should have marked him with a striker and Theo's stop was one of the best saves i've ever seen. Now heres my rateings for our team?

Ryan: 6 good game didnt really have to do much looks a bit scared without Zwannswijk lacks leadership.

Bojic. 8 Great cross for the first goal made some vital interceptions especially when Henrique was on.

Sainsbury. 7 Had a really solid game did nothing wrong was pleased that his passes weren't straight to the other team.

Anderson. 9 His talk was what i really liked he's a true CB like to be in control and for a young guy he's going to go far good singing.

Rose 8 Really good game his runs down the line are great best LB in the A-league.

Ibini. 7 Great header not a idea winger though need to pass faster he gets the ball taken off him to easy still a solid game defended better then i expected.

Montgomery. 8 Best buy of the season if u ask me, solid as a rock, great tackler, passer and runs all day.

Hutchinson 7 I think the captaincy has really helped him he's stepped up 3 gears this season and his passes are really great does his job and is a good leader.

McGlinchey 7 he's our best winger for sure had a great game and his dribbling is getting better and better. Cuts between the defence like a knife through butter.

Rogic 9 WOW he is a gem his ball skills are second to none was tired though you could tell. I hate how his success takes him away from the club for two weeks now the overseas teams will start circling.

McBreen 7 had a consistent game wasn't getting the balls like he usually does that what we missed from Partick the most i think was his passing

The subs came on and did there job nothing outstanding though.

Last but not least KING ARNIE 10 what a great coach i like him more then Lawrie. Lawrie was a great coach and a club legend but arnie is a better coach by far, best in the league and what he has done with the money he has had outstanding, and he loves the club.

Was a great arvo out.

Crowd was ok quiet vocal at times heat was what i think kept numbers down.

One more thing,
Breisha what a scummy piece of work he is a bully no other way of putting it. I haven't hated a play as much as him since the sack wacker.

I will take a win over Brisbane anywhere and this win was ultimately deserved. After being outplayed for most of the first half in scorching conditions the Mariners second half energy earned this win; their collective will and belief made the difference and they finally removed the Brisbane wood from their shoulders.
Bernie Ibini got the Mariners off to the best possible start: a great ball out of defence from Rose to Rogic who found McBreen, the big veteran’s feet deserted him but he didn’t panic and fed the rapidly approaching Bojic on the right. The cross was perfect and Bernie met it at the far post with a precision header. It was wonderfully executed football on the break. The delighted crowd, wickedly, chanted “We want seven!”

Brisbane then did what they do best: they dominated possession, but they were helped enormously by the poor passing and decision making of the Mariners. When a team loves to keep possession there is no point in feeding them more of it but the Mariners gifted the ball to them too often. Sloppy they may have been but sharp organised defending with Montgomery, in particular, and Hutchinson quick to cover in midfield was keeping the Roar at bay and another sublime break almost doubled the lead. Good work by Bernie and Josh Rose allowed the full back to cut the ball back to Rogic, who from a difficult angle hit the ball first time against Roar’s post. The languid Rogic, struggling in the warm conditions, was always a danger to Brisbane with his brilliant skills thrilling the crowd.

Roar’s possession could not be denied; Murdocca is one of the great A League players, a foundation player with the Roar: gifted, lively, with an eye for a killer pass but he can’t shoot – until now! The defence gave him too much room and he let fly with a ripper to Ryan’s bottom corner. Unstoppable and no more than Roar deserved.

In the second half, as they so often do, the Mariners cranked it up; Brisbane all but disappeared. A rampaging run by Rogic and a powerful shot had Theo despairing but the ball was wide. Anderson failed to get good connection from a corner. Rose and Bojic were both making inroads and the Mariners were calling the shots. A sweetly weighted pass from Rogic put McBreen in but his feet again let him down. Sainsbury, impressive throughout, headed over.

The winner came from an unlikely build up: a free kick earned by the irrepressible Bojic was curled by the returning Ollie Bozanic deep beyond the far post and it was the diminutive Mickey McGlinchey who headed the ball back for Rogic to knock home. Teams defend against knock backs like this but I doubt Brisbane expected McGlinchey to be the man at the far post. Brisbane pushed forward but it was half hearted, their football was pretty but toothless, Ryan was mainly a spectator. Pedj must have been the only person in the stadium not to hear Arnie’s call of “No foul, no foul” and conceded the fee kick from which Brisbane’s only chance game; Partaluu’s header softly going straight to Ryan’s arms. In the dying moments Mitchell Duke almost put the icing on the cake with an off balance left foot shot against the bar.

Arnie’s faith in his defensive system was justified as Anderson and Sainsbury were rarely exposed and the full backs pushed Brisbane back in the second half. We will be tested by Adelaide with Rogic away next week – bring it on!

MoM – Rogic – his genius a thing to savour
2 points Sainsbury – composure and adventure in his play
1 Monty who never stopped in conditions he can never have played in

Good post Roy. Our cheap turn overs/sloppiness was my only issue. Otherwise a great win in the heat against a good pressing side. Though I will say they don't transition half so well under Rado and Broich and Nichols are shadows of their former selves.

Was ecstatic to See Olly back too, he was in great form and for mine really helped change the game.

Great summations Blair and Roy.

Rogic is a freaking genius. The ball he threaded through for the first goal was breathtakingly world class. The way he glides around the park and past players always gives the impression that he is 'taking the piss' with the opposition!

Special mention to Monty, who I thought would really struggle in the crushing heat. What a massive engine he has. A no-fuss professional midfield destroyer\creator that is fast becoming a Club hero. Someone take him down to Immigration and get him an Aussie passport.

The iceing? Little Micky McGlinchey with a great last gasp desperation header to help win us the match. How hungry was he to do that so late in the game?

What a superb season so far. Bring on the Adelaide 'Barrel Boys'!

But we are so potent going forward. It should stay like it is.
Yeah, I was taking the piss. Our current system is the modern standard and we are doing it well. We got one game out of 5 against Brisbane last year using 4-4-2.
I was also impressed with how we let Brisbane play in front of us, kept our width, and transitioned quickly to the attacking arrow formation.
I disagree with the poster that said Bernie is not a winger. I find when playing in a front two he would always attack wide and his goal today was a great winger's goal.
In the modern game, crossing from the byline is considered low-return, so a winger needs to be able to attack the near post. Bernie's great at that, plus has a lot of confidence with the ball at his feet.

I agree with Fishsdad, it was a hard game to enjoy but there were some sublime moments.
Our first goal was just superb. From Rogics pass to Bernies header...all class.
Rogics` turn on the halfway, leaving two Roar players dumbfounded, was just magic & should be put in the training manual at the COE.
Then His first time shot that hit the post sensational!!! He`s come so far so quickly, it`s like we can see him growing in stature.
Despite the Rogic magic though my MOM would have to be Nick Montgomery. What a beast!!!
He tackled everything & continually knocked the Roar out of stride, giving players time to recover & to get back behind the ball.

It was a great tactical battle too, with Arnie content to sit & absorb the pressure in the first half whilst trying to catch them on the counter attack.
The second half however, we held the ball better & made them move around with Rogic finally finishing them from a great header by Weemac.

Ryan 7 -a very controlled game with little to do in the 2nd half
Rose 7 - looked sharp & & ran his heart out all Game
Ando 6 - was a little shaky at times but for his first starting game did well
Sbury 7.5 - he`s getting better & looking more comfortable each game.
Pedj 5 - a great cross for Bernies goal but disappointing otherwise. He needs to work on his body shape when he
receives the ball, his first touch continually goes towards Ryan which closes down some better options to
play forward.
Bernie 6 - did well with the goal & played well but out of position
Monty 8.5- tackled his heart out & won a lot of ball for us. An awesome display
Hutcho 7- a solid captains knock
Weemac 7- didn`t have much fluency in the first half but really came alive in the second to set up the winner
Rogic 8.4 - A socceroo starter for sure with that display
McBreen 6.5- heavily marked but tried to make an impact.Enjoying his best season with us.
Olly--wasn`t it good to see him back on the pitch. Sterj would have been cursing Olly`s late cameo.

Beath 5- pretty ordinary. The gypsy should have been marched & so should have Jurman. He also gave some pretty soft yellows

Berisha Besart--No1 knob in the Aleague .This guy is going for sackwaks title.

There is more to wing play than just attacking the far post.
A winger still needs to be able to cross and work well with an attacking back. Having confidence with the ball at your feet is no use if you continually lose it.
Wee Mac plays like a winger, Bernie played like a striker.

Style you must have been watching the girls. Pedj skinned Henrique so many times it was not funny. He basically owned him the whole time he was on the pitch and thus nullified one of Roar's more dangerous players.

Score an early goal, park the bus, let the Brissie boys run around and get tired til it cools down.
Then hit them again in the second half. Works in hot weather.

Berisha's skull is two inches thick, not much room for thinking. He thinks bad sportmanship is O.K.
I think he did a good job disrupting his own teams focus. d**khead.
I guess Beath must of left his red card in his other shorts. Very soft Christopher.....:(

Pedj must be getting close to a week's holiday with another yellow...o_O
I like Monty.....
