Our boggy team on their turf ...

Hope we have the same starting line up with Rose replacing Eddie on the bench ...

It's probably just my mind playing tricks but... Haven't we actually done better against them away than at home, over the last couple of seasons? - not that we've done particularly impressively against them away either... In fairness, they've been everyone's bogey team.. ;)

Will Heffernan play? I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes.

Tough call, two all draw.
Would be very happy with a 2-2 draw, but think we can do it. Not sure Heff will have clearance. If Posco is fit then same side for me. Bench will be competitive with the 2 Rose's, Izzo, and possibly Heff to come back in.

I think they were away to a better opponent than us and looked better than we did. I'm tipping them to do us this week but hoping to be surprised.

Article about Tony Walmsley's selection issues:
Central Coast Mariners veteran Josh Rose in fitness, selection battle ahead of Brisbane Roar clash
  • Tom Smithies

MARINERS boss Tony Walmsley admits veteran Josh Rose is no guarantee to force his way straight back into the Central Coast team after his side’s winning start to the new campaign.

Rose hopes to be fit for Sunday’s trip to Brisbane after receiving an injection in his knee, but the performance of debutant Mitch Austin in last weekend’s 3-2 win over Perth has given Walmsley pause for thought.

Austin’s pace and directness in the left winger role earmarked for Rose was part of the Mariners’ new-found attacking threat, demonstrating why Walmsley elected to promote him to the starting XI once Rose was ruled out.

“We’ll have to see how Rosey pulls up after the injection — we’ve got three sessions now before the game, so hopefully he’ll be able to take part,” Walmsley said.

“You can’t rule out him being good to start on Sunday as he’s got plenty of miles into his legs in preseason, but it’s true I’ve got a lot to think about as the boys on the left side did very well against Perth.

“Rosey did fantastic in pre-season and I had been looking at Mitch as an option off the bench, with his pace later in the game. But he’s played his way into the team at the right time — he’s not just quick, but he has an excellent delivery with a range of crosses.

“So it’s great for me as a coach to have to make these choices — though I might yet need Rose at centreback if Jake Poscoliero doesn’t make it.”

Poscoliero strained a hamstring late in the game against Perth, and also has to prove his fitness before Sunday’s game. But whoever is selected, Walmsley said his side would not temper its approach for its first away game.

“The heartening thing is that there’s room for improvement,” he said. “We were much better in the second half than the first, which I put down to nerves and players making their debuts.

“It’s true we were quite open at the end when maybe we could have kept the ball a bit better, but that’s something we’ll learn.”

I didn't read it that way, I thought he just meant any decisions may be made for him if Posco is out.

considering what TW has done with the team and his selections for that first game I'm prepared to trust his judgement regardless until he proves me wrong

Not confident of a result for us here I think it's about the performance we give

As long as we don't get thumped I'm ok

Be very interesting to see how we set up away, there is no onus on us to entertain away from home so will we try to play on the counter or just go for it?

Interesting game. Brisbane tonked us last year with Tony at the helm but we will be quietly confident going into this game.
I'd be happy with a draw and a Heff debut goal.
Maybe TW really is the messiah and we will go Top of the league.

What Rose over Ashcroft and Bosnar at CB.
Not a fan of this
Rose is no natural at CB but he does provide some pace, Roar have a have a pretty mobile midfield and some pace up front with Maclaren so I can understand the thinking. Ascroft and McGing looked a little unsure as a partnership in the FFA cup game, Ascroft got drawn out of position a few times despite being the more experienced CB. Ascroft was outpaced by Castro last week when he came on. Eddie is best described as lumbering however he could lift his game now that he got the message that he is no longer first pick CB, also provide some height defending Roar corners. Broich normally plays on the left and cuts in to shoot (or fall over to gain the free), should be an interesting test for Roux. Austin wont have a bunny every week so I would keep Rosey on the bench to bring on if Austin is struggling.

Austin: Good to prove the doubters wrong

Mariners attacker Mitch Austin says it was satisfying to prove the critics wrong and open the A-League season in style by defeating Perth in the opening round.

Central Coast started the season well with a 3-2 home win against the Glory.

Two penalties to Fabio Ferreira and a fortunate rebound goal from Roy O’Donovan was enough for the Mariners to get the victory.

It was the first A-League appearance for Austin who joined the club in June.

“It was a great experience, it was awesome to be back out there playing again as it’s felt like the longest pre-season in the world,” the 24-year old told FourFourTwo.

“It was a good entertaining game which is what we are going to be about this season at the Central Coast Stadium.

“It was a great win, I think most people wrote us off in this one so it was good to prove the doubters wrong and get the win.

“We have worked all pre-season on a high-pressing attacking style of play and I think we showed the fans a glimpse of what we are going to be capable of this year.”

A former Manly United junior, Austin headed to the UK in 2009 to join Rotherham United. He spent several seasons on loan in the Conference, joining Cambridge United in 2013, before returning to Australia four months ago.

“I've settled in great at the club, all the boys make you feel welcome,” Austin said.

“England is a different style of football to here. In the lower leagues in the UK there is a lot of long ball and you can find yourself not getting into the game at all especially for a winger which was very frustrating.

“The A-League is really technical and everyone tries to pass the ball here and play the right way which was one of the key things for me coming here.

“The professionalism has been excellent as well, you can see the league is really big now and it's only going to get bigger and bigger as the years go on. “

Austin said the goal of the Mariners this season is to entertain while reaching the semi-finals.

“The mood at training has been great, it's a great place to go and train every day,” he said.

“At a lot of clubs I've been at there are players with big egos. At the Mariners everyone is down to earth and works hard for each other, which is great to see.

“For me personally I want to start as many games as possible and contribute as many assists and goals to the team as I can.”

The Mariners head to Brisbane on Sunday to take on the Roar.

With the Queensland outfit kicking off their campaign in style with a 3-1 win over Western Sydney at Pirtek Stadium, Austin is expecting a difficult encounter.

“It will be a tough game there is no doubting that, they played very well against Western Sydney in round one and have made some good signings in Corona and (Jamie) Maclaren,” he said.

“We played them a few weeks ago in pre-season and I thought we played well especially in the first half.

“I think if we can play like that again on Sunday we have got a really good chance of getting a positive result.”

I think Rosie on the bench is, perhaps, the most obvious choice in the entire lineup (except perhaps for Monty & Fab starting ;) ) - assuming that he doesn't mind the role that is... By now he has proven himself to, at a minimum, be adequate in three roles, LW, LB and CB... He's our only natural cover at LB, I think he did pretty well at CB on several occasions last season and he's certainly been worthwhile at LW - at this point he's almost the perfect bench warmer ;) I can see the merit of starting him on LW and using Austin as an impact player, but if Austin keeps going the way he did on the weekend, it seems like a waste of talent... Better then, to ensure that Rosie is rested to play at full speed, the last 30-or-so, in whichever role he is needed.
On top of that, I actually thought that the changes changes, against Perth, was part of the problem... I swear we looked less stable after Bosnar came on... Might just be me obviously ;)

"The squad is IN for our Hyundai A-League Round 2 hit out against Brisbane Roar. The Yellow & Navy will take on their old rivals at Suncorp Stadium this Sunday.
Mariners’ defender Jacob Poscoliero has been left out of the squad that will travel to Brisbane with a minor hamstring injury. Paul Izzo makes his first appearance in a Central Coast Mariners' Hyundai A-League line up after returning from Olyroos duty.

“I said to Caceres, Fitzgerald and Montgomery this morning that against any three in this league and you look at Lustica, McKay and Corona if that’s going to be their midfield, I wouldn’t be swapping our players for theirs,” Walmsley said.

“Our job on Saturday is to make Brisbane incredibly uncomfortable on their own patch and if we do that and we take out chances it could be a great afternoon.”

Central Coast Mariners: 1.Paul IZZO, 2.Storm ROUX, 3.Josh ROSE, 5.Harry ASCROFT, 6.Mitch AUSTIN, 7.Fabio FERREIRA, 8.Nick MONTGOMERY (C), 9.Roy O’DONOVAN, 10.Anthony CACERES, 11.Nick FITZGERALD, 12.Liam REDDY (GK), 16.Liam ROSE 18.Glen TRIFIRO, 19.Josh BINGHAM, 20. Anthony KALIK, 21.Michael NEILL, 22.Jake McGING, 23.Eddy BOSNAR

So, who do we think will be the omittees? I'm inclined to think Bozza (we need speed at the back if we press high) and either Liam Rose or Tricky, probably Rose for mine - Tricky has the experience and is quite versatile. I think Ascroft will be in Posco's spot. Izzo obviously, Josh Rose, Liam Rose or Tricky, Bingham & Kalik on the splinter.
