Interesting game.
First half, we were lacking, just lacking.
The changes brought energy which was desperately needed.
MOM Jacko, for his changes.
Feijao and Ngor bring back memories of early Benni. Keen as mustard, rushing in making mistakes. Give them time, hopefully they will follow a similar path. Today they both brought energy.
I think likewise McCalmont will take time to find his feet, and maybe adjust to summer Australian pitches. Jury remains out and probably will until January, but not too worried.
Hopefully we have seen the death of 442 and two big strikers up front, but no midfield.
Brandman was trying to be a winger and an attacking mid at the same time and was lost. A big waste of a very talented prospect. Lessons learned.

Time for some heresy:
Storm is too old to be a fullback. In the modern game it needs someone to get up and down that sideline continuously. I love him and think he still has an important role to play but not as a starting fullback/wingback.
Alou needs to come from the bench at 60min, Edmo Offers more from the start. It will be interesting to see who is playing as our starting striker at the end of the season.

Questions:
What do we do with Steely's talent and obvious ability? It is not gelling at the moment.
Who will be the sorely needed #10 playing behind the who will be the #9.
Is Tappy the real deal and our best prospect or is Tappy the real deal and our best prospect? Answer yes or F off.

Seriously, Tappy Mom, followed by Doka (only one working for the first 45Min), and Brian for a point.

Loving it so far.

Last season we had 0 pts from 2 games, this season we are 2 pts from 2 games. We're improving! Do we go undefeated all season in the aleague and do the back2back2back?! The dream is still alive.
We're infinitely better this year!

It's maths, so must be a fact.

5 at the back seems to work well with this group but it could just have suited against Adelaide.

Allows Lucas to stay higher and not worry as much about defending. Then it gives Paull support as well.

Also allows Doka to be higher like Lucas as well.

Storm has had a slow start but the players around aren’t helping him.

Good tactical shift and the effort came with more possession because we were just bombing long and turning it over way to much in the first half.

Great comment.
I chatted to Tappy and Steel after the game.
Both said they were f...Ed. Legs spent after China.
Getting home at 1pm on Thursday. Straight to training the next day then to Adelaide.
What do they do to overcome this issue?

How did we overcome it last year?

Another worrying game but also mildly pleasing in some aspects as well.

The fact that some people can't see that Alfie is going to be absolute quality.....is slightly alarming.

Really pleased with Fellatio's contribution.

Edmo is stepping up a notch finally.

The Keeper is a keeper.

Paull did OK.

Jacko has a shit load of work to do but he is a great coach and will turn our sow's ear into a silk purse by Christmas.

Probably lower intensity training sessions to compensate for the increased match load. Not a terrible idea by any stretch. May hamper progression in strength and building muscle density. I'm assuming that's why Rich hired an NRL fitness coach xD

I think we will look a lot better with Trent and Di Pizio back. Paull looked ok in a back three. Tappy back to midfield when Trent comes back and Di Pizio as a #10 behind a striker.

My Man of the Match was Tappy, who made a whole host of crucial and well timed interceptions and worked his socks off.

Some player ratings:

Dylan Peraic-Cullen 6.5: Did well to scramble onto the ball for Goodwin's effort, can't really be faulted for the Adelaide's goal. Only critcism would be some occasinally dodgy distribution but is looking more and more like our number one keeper.

Storm Roux 5: Worked hard and made some good overlapping and connecting runs/passes but his lack of pace was brutally demonstrated by Ayoubi and I can't argue with his hooking at half time.

Brad Tapp: 8 Got desperately unlucky with the scramble for the first goal and wasn't helped by Alou. Made terrific interceptions all night and was defensively sound, showed the height of ceiling today and has the potential to be our next player overseas.

Brian Kaltak 6: Fantastic ball for Edmonson for our goal but really struggled along with the team in the first half. As captain we desperately need him to stand up in those difficult moments, and to his credit helped somewhat stablise the team after the first goal.

Lucas Mauragis: 7 Good performance from Mauragis but struggled to get forward, along with the whole side, in the first half. Made some great interceptions in the second but clearly was suffering the effects of playing 3 games in a week by the end.

Alfie McCalmont 5: Worked hard but gave up the ball far too often and sometimes under minimal pressure. Not Balard or Nisbet quality yet but there is potential there.

Harrison Steele: 4.5 Was good defensively and cut passing lanes well, but is far, far too negative when showing for the ball and passing. Looks a player short on confidence who can improve with game time.

Bailey Brandtman 6: Probably our best player in the first half and showed some nice skill and linked well with Edmonson at time. Was periphal in the second.

Mikael Doka: 4.5 Looked exhausted from beginning to end and struggled to join midfield to attack. While he is an important player in our side he clearly didn't have the capacity to start this game let alone play 90 minutes.

Alou Kuol: 4.5 Made minimal impact and probably deserved to be hooked at half time. His runs have improved since last season and is getting in better goal scoring postions reguarly. Is very much a confidence player who desperately needs a goal.

Ryan Edmonson: 7 The Attacking player who worked the hardest, and whose run and domination of Isaisas got us our equalizer. Linked well with Brandtman a few times in the first half and was unlucky not to have a goal to his name.

Substitues:

Nathan Paull: 5.5 Probably his best performance at A-League level. Looked much more comfortable in a back three and did well with some interceptions. Positioning was still poor at times, however.

Sabit Ngor: 6 Nice finish for the goal and made some good runs. Faded in and out of the game and had some heavy touches that cost us attacks, but overall a good performance for a player who looks to have a bright future at A-League level ahead.

Vitor Feijão: 6.5 His desperation got us the equalizer and worked his socks off for every ball when he came on. Great to see him working hard and his desperation and flashes of skill showed that there's a A-League level import in there.

Nico Duarte: 5 Didn't have much impact on the game and we struggled a tad in attack once Edmonson came off. Is a quality young player who needs more time to gel with his fellow attackers.

Sasha Kuzevski: N/A Not enough time on the pitch.

Overall a great second half and after conceding the goal it was a gutsy performance to stablise and get through to half time after a tough game in China. However, the lack of rotation from Jacko and Danny really affected the first half and a better side than Adelaide would have been out of sight.

Jacko's tactical switch at half time definetly helped, even Clough acknowledged it in his post game interview. My one frustration was the substitution of both Edmonson and Kuol, we finally sucessfully exploited Adelaide's lack of defensive height then immediately took all that height off.

Hopefully after now 6 competitive games without a win the team is starting to gel and we can grind Perth in to dust next week.

I think whilst Brandtman is a good prospect he is a defensive liability and has a lot of work to do in this area. Your score is way too high, watch the replay and his defensive lapses especially in and around the box. Not dishing him just saying he is very much still a work in progress.

Fair enough, I think I definitely am biased towards our Academy products and tend to overly look past lapses like that, especially for a primarily attacking player.
