Much much improved but still not anywhere near where he needs to be.
I agree. The amount of times Steele and Alfie run into the same space is infuriating and Steele being the youngsters 'gives way' to Alfie. As mentioned previously, I think they don't work that well together (atm). I have yo-yoed with my opinion of Alfie. He did what Mauragis couldn't and set up a surefire goal for Kuz though. Jacko has his work cut out to get his combinations right.

Ok. I had an enjoyable day at the Football with the family and a couple of mates. My Grand-daughter did the walk out with the girls team which was so cute. The only downside was the weather.

Now onto the Football.

The ladies were very good. The keeper is so sharp and has lost weight and looks miles better than Dumount. The back 4 is a bit agricultural at times but works very hard.
The midfield is sharper this year and Izzy Gomez and PetaTrimis were exceptional. In the second half Rasmussen and Galic came on and were also fantastic (stacked bench!).
The attacking options.....oh my days, Pennock and Nunn are probably the best two players in the Ninja league (calling it after 1 game!!). they should make the boys train with these two to pick up some tips.
Evans is a decent foil too. Aggressive and quick.
Also credit the ladies for spending alot of time with the fans after the game.

I commented on Facebook last week that i thought this team might win the comp this season. Just smashed the current champions. Its looking good.

The Men.

It started so well. Alfie was on fire and we were quick and playing well. But after 15 mins we went back to slow plodding Football and passing to anyone not in a yellow shirt.
Perth are shit and played for a draw.

Dylan 7. I like him. Apart from that ridiculous pass to a Perth forward, he looks the goods.
Sash 7.5 Alot to like. Caught out of position defensively a couple of times and a couple of poor final third passes but one of our best.
Paull. 7. His best game so far.
Tappy. 6 Hopefully it just a strain.
Kaltak 6.5. Slowly improving. Some great headers. Passing still sloppy.
Mauragis 5.5 Worked hard but decision making and passing was rather poor. One decent shot.
Steele 5.5. Defo better than last week and occasionally looked for a forward pass. Less timid but still kills our go forward more often than not.
Alfie. 7.5 Maybe our only class player. Scared to shoot and final third passing let him down.
Doka 6.5. Real mixed bag. Butchered some good attacking opportunities but also shows more ticker and drive than most. Will never be a 10 but also has good skills for a fullback.
Alou 5.5 Defended well from the front. Needs to anticipate the ball coming across.
Brandtman 5.5. Some good skills but diasappears for periods and is NOT an A League quality striker at this stage.

Subs.
Diesel 6.5. I liked what i saw.
Feijao 6.5. Improving.
Big Edmo. 6. That defending was quality. That first time shot when he could have controlled it on the edge of the box was shite.
Eames 6. Couple of lovely passes out to the wing.
Ngor 5.5. Didn't really happen today.

Lift the workrate, especially off the ball.

300% plus a red
Talked out of it by var . Whats the difference between this and the bulls yellow card scandal
Under the new laws, dogso-handball that's not deliberate (ie is an unnatural position foul, as this one should be) and results in a pk is now a caution.

That's a new one this season.

I have no idea how var ruled that one. Atrocious, but the sort of reffing we are used to, and the rookie didn't have the stones to push back even though you could tell it took him a long time to be able to justify the change.

Still have the same problems in attack as we have all season. And in defence too. Perth are Shite and we couldn't beat them

I didn't hear what the ref said after he had looked at his TV screen, but from watching the reply on the big screen I assumed the Penalty would be reversed as the ball hit the arm at the level of the armpit.
The rule for the past couple of seasons has been the ball must hit the arm below the armpit level to be a Hand Ball.
Did the ball hit at or below that level? If it took that long to decide it must have been very close indeed - and the correct call is then No Penalty.
That being the case the Ref was correct in overturning his initial decision.
Incidentally, I thought he did a very good job tonight - there were some 50/50 calls and they went both ways.

But the ball hitting the arm isn't being debated.
The ref concedes the ball hit the arm. Just that the arm was in a natural position in his onfield review.

What I'm asking is where is the review of the players movement. It's great to say he was removing the arm to a natural position. But he checked his retreat, to placed himself in a defensive position. There is no defender after him. the ref gave it in real time, so it needed clear and obvious to turn it.

I'm all for a reduction of Handballs after last year. But that's a handball every year since I was 6.

Disappointing draw.
First 15mins the boys were looking extremely sharp on the ball, should’ve had 2 early goals. Perth then figured us out and made it hard for us with their block.
Biggest take away, we literally just lack a genuine goal threat. We had this kind of match situation so many times in the last 2 years where a team would sit in their low block, make it hard and try counter us. But we had real goal scorers who’d find a way. We don’t right now.

Kuzi was brilliant, Paull was good. Mauragis excellent again. Alfie lead the show for extended periods. That was about it for me..

we have to find a goal threat, alou ain’t it. Eddy was poor off the bench this time round. Bailey is finding his feet, same with Sabit.

It was well below the armpit.

The claim made was natural position.

Apparently defenders are allowed to stick their arm out 90 degrees to stop a cross now.

I blame VAR - who was it?

Rookie ref no doubt didn’t feel he could push back. Which is still, of course, his responsibility.

I doubt we'll get an apology from Moss. He's already shown he's going to copy the others in treating the fans like idiots in how he spins ref performance

Kaltak to quiet and gentle to be Captain / to lead?
As well as too busy?

Overall still one of our best each week but that 1 or 2 passes that are going a stray each game, are they possibly because in the moments before receiving the ball he’s thinking about others or how he can direct.
Kaltak can't even lead his own back line. He doesn't direct the defeànder's at all, doesn't look out for loose players and keep the gaps covered. If he can't lead 3 players, he can't lead 11.

However, I can't see anybody else for the rule.

For the back line, there is a real chance for Tapp to step up and take the lead role Kaltak is supposed to be playing.

Hopefully Paull can put in more strong performances so Kaltak can start having to fight for his spot

VAR was man boobs himself KGJ. Is it any surprise he bullied the newbie into changing his decision.

Bit of a pessimistic response from a few but this is pretty similar to last season.
You can see us building but not quite there. The principles that we play with, as Jacko often says, are starting to click but we're toothless up front so far. Same as last season except we were also more leaky at the back a year ago.
A win would have been better obviously, and should have been our expectation against Perth but they worked hard on their organisation and were better than the weeks before.

We lack some more depth with injury playing it's part. Having Trent and DiPizio would really help. Sadly might need to add Tapp to that...

But I feel like I'm a few games some of those speedy combinations will turn into goals and we'll start winning more than not. Optimistic about that. But we do need our goals scorers to step up at the same time

At the moment we only have one player who is a real goal threat in Doka and he is playing out of position. Last year we had so many threats it wasn’t essy to mark all of them. Kuol by himself is just a player who chase’s the ball and gives away fouls and is easily contained along with his poor control, he is barely a threat. Other than Kuz no one else really looked like even having a shot. As I said 67% possession against the poorest defensive team in the comp and only getting away 8 shots is criminal. It should have been over 15. It’s been a while since one of our home games has been labeled a very boring game. I didn’t enjoy it at all. We are not going to click for some time if at all this season. It’s a rebuild and the sooner we acknowledge that fact the easier it’s going to be being a fan this season. The Nix will do us next week, ACL doesn’t even come into discussion anymore so chalk that down as a loss.

I would argue it looks like that at the start of every season and it's only after players step up that we know who are the goods.
Last season we lost nearly all of our previous sources of goals in the offseason and only held onto Tulio. And then only for a few months.

Where are the goals to come from, we bemoaned, and 4 losses into the season the wailing got loud and the gnashing of teeth became fraying.
I regularly urged patience as the play was there but just not 100% yet. The whining was doing my head in and Forum Phoenix straight up left CCMFans due to it.

Then - Treble.

It is very similar now. Jacko is very astute and if no one steps up he will twig and even recruit.

Too early to fret.

I had to watch the replay unfortunately but actually saw improvement and thought our combos, speed and connection has stepped up. We were still unable to create dynamic attacks but were only a step away from this. We are also trying a new formation and mix of players so that's to be somewhat expected.

If people haven't learnt the lessons of last year they never will.

We're getting there and will still have a good season. It's a stretch to think we'll win everything again, but we'll compete to the end
