R18: Sydney vs Mariners

Have to agree with the majority about:
1. being proud of the performance
2. Needing Clarkie back
3. Needing a true goal scorer up front
4. Needing a recognised CB (and not another fake like Bosnar)

I am not a supporter of Mossy particularly this season, have been very disappointed with his apparent lack of ideas and general crap being spouted at pressers but I did have to stand up for him on a social site on Sat night as a certain supporter who is always vocal in his loathing of Mossy appeared to have some sort of vendetta. I believe that we as fans have to say something or things will not change, I moved to Aus just in time to see us get our asses handed to us by Kawasaki 5:1 in the ACL and after 3/4 games was saying how Lawrie needed to go because we were F'ing shite. I was met with undying devotion to Lawrie despite the attrocious play and comments like "Lawrie is the Mariners, He stays no matter how bad we are". I do however think that we have now gone too far the other way with some fans. Mossy did nothing "wrong" tactically this weekend (ok, we could question them sitting back at 2:1), it may not have been to some peoples liking but with a performance like that, he deserves some credit and maybe we will see this from now on. That being said, I believe that the top 6 is now well out of reach but the end of the season could be exciting.

Very pleasing performance. Hopefully Mossy can see the way forward. We will be better with -
A strong, composed, quality ball playing CB in for Boz.
More minutes to get full fitness for Cernak, Liam Rose, Kalick,Fab.
A consistent goal scoring quality forward.
Micky Neill back from injury.
Either Mossy to learn from this season or a new coach.
Confidence.

Apart from that we created more chances in this game against good opposition than i can remember for a couple of seasons. With a CB and a forward we would have won that one. I'm not sure how much of the tactics were Mossy's doing or did Walmsley dictate the side and plan? Either way i'm happy to play like that and build for next season even if we lose more often than not. Tighten up the defence and results will come.

This. That was a performance that would sell tickets. That was a performance that gives younger players confidence. That was a performance that should worry opponents in future weeks - direct, attacking, positive.

People get hung up on the "no recognised strikers" bit but it worked very well.

If only Mossy had the likes of Janco or Smelts at his disposal Sydney wouldn't have had a sniff .Striker was our key ingredient on weekend we created enough to have the game dusted in first half, very encouraging by the team if we remain positive I won't be sharpening my knives anytime soon.

I didn't get the impression we started to park the omnibus, I think we just ran out of steam. Of course it could have also been due to the fact that FC started to lift their game at the same time as we started to fade.
I also think not having a recognised striker on the paddock was a good trick - the defenders didn't seem to know who to pick up and therefore left space. I'd like to see those same people start up front next game.
I'm a bit bemused that Bos is getting the flack for defensive lack - he wasn't even in the team! I agree that we need a better class of CB though.

Forgot a couple of things. I was unspeakably angry when the fourth goal went in, because you could see it unfolding in slow motion. Fitzy left Roux defending the wrong side of a 2-on-1 on the edge of our area, he got done and Gersbach fed the ball to Janko for the goal. Fitzy basically gave up on that play / gambled that nothing was going to come from it and we were stuffed. Gersbach had been getting forward all day so that was not the time to gamble.

Also, Sydney improved markedly when Calver was withdrawn for Grant. Calver's got potential but he's not a starting XI player yet, and Grant seemed to stop us up on that flank where previously we'd been able to get in behind through Cernak. That made life easier for Sydney to stop up Ferreira and we were pretty ineffective from that point. Ferreira off, Major up front and Fitzy wide didn't help.

Was the best we have played all year ...

Pleasing for me was seeing the combination between Carcers and Ferreira grow ... finally Carcers has a player moving off the ball into playable positions.

Cernak for Fitzy is a must... Fitzy seems very low on confidence ATM and needs some time without pressure..

Given this is Hutch's last season I would love Liam Rose to start most games ... he is a talent that needs game time...

I'd love to know the answer to this question.
We play boring dour s*** all season, Walmsley comes in and makes a statement about entertainment and suddenly a turnaround. Can't be a coincidence can it. Love to be a fly on the wall of that changing room right now as who is running the ship right now?
