Hugely improved in the 2nd half. Great character. Below our best, but a valuable point. A draw away from home. I'll take it happily.

Great to see Patrick back. All class. Olly made a big difference coming on. A rare poor game from Nick.

Special mention for Rose's raids down the left in 2nd half. I've been waiting all season for this. Confirms that he loves playing alongside Olly.

Yes Gillet is a joke. But this time we benefitted. Montgomery should have been marched in the 1st half.

Hopefully Arnie's big vent relieves some of the immense pressure he's been under this week.

We are being ripped apart.

We are playing far to deep with no outlet for our defence to play out to.

No pace, poor movement.

.

Two key points made by Wombat, especially the one about poor movement. This seems to happen every now and again with us - usually it's a strength of ours, but on the odd occassion we just stop.

We can complain all we like about refereeing decisions, but two weeks ago (B)ernie scored with the possible assistance of his hand, last week we were lucky to keep Trent on the field (probably the correct call, but many ref's would have marched him), and this week we were lucky to keep 11 men on.

Geez I hope that McGlinchey and Macca see out the season with us...

We are missing Sainsbury a lot.

No pace, poor movement.

This could get ugly if Arnie doesn't shake things up. Maybe Olly might help although Monty was the only middy doing any defensive work.
Ageing team on the park hutch kwas stern mcbreen monty patrick all well in their 30s no pace in any of them ,big mistake leaving olly on the bench ,gutsy 2nd half when the mariners run at teams they will not be stopped when they play like the that in the first half they look very poor ,ange did a good job in nulifying the mariners danger down the right were Pedj and weemac are usually boming up the right ,but positives are they were not beat and now for a run of home games just hope the transfer window does not take any key members of the team .

I agree, movement was the biggest issue, largely because it had to be stepped up a whole nother gear as Ange had given strict instruction to close down our distribution channels at top speed targeting our DM's. Brisbane's pressing game of old. It worked incredibly well, Milligan, curse him was a beast, and I have never seen Hutch give up as much possession as he did in that first half. Next thing you know they are in our third with our fullbacks pushed too high, and our defence either being stretched wide to cover creating room down the middle, or vice versa with space down the flanks. Pedj also had a pretty awful first half which didn't help.

Olly's insertion definitely made a big difference, a key reason being he's got the skills on the ball to be able to cope better with the kind of pressure being applied than either Nick or Hutch. Interesting, you know how Herbert deploys weemac as DM (or atleast was) for the allwhites. Olly and Weemac as Dm's together to counter this sort of pressing game could work well I think. Never happen though :)

Also a nod to Bernie, his movement helped too. Great run son, pity nothing better came of it.

McBreen worked his heart out. Great finish, we truly needed.

Zac and Dutchy both very good and not at fault for our defensive issues.

Very happy to take a point.

Am I the only one who felt bemused when Leijer wasn't given a yellow for that deliberate handball, he misjudged the header, knew mcbreen was through behind him and flung his hand up for it...

I thought he got one. :yellowcard: When he did the high foot in the box I was expecting a second :yellowcard: :redcard:, then when he elbowed Danny in the back of the head a third. :yellowcard: :redcard:

So he got none? :headbutt: :headbutt:

yeah Leijer got a yellow for the handball

Anyone see the woman in the crowd afterwards with the massive mariners contract with all the players names on it and signing spots...

I agree with the summaries above, we'll said

ollie should have started as ffc said .i'd also add kwaise has not future in the a-league ,we are far better service by the menace of duke when the other teams defence tires . the big deal about sainbury not playing is our lack of pace in defence without him.
the ange con job got us again . arnie needs to realise this guy will always pull a stunt for big games.

He copped it for the cheating handball, he go away with it on that pen though. I remember at EAS years ago one of our guys copped a face full of studs, hard, from a raised boot....pretty sure not even a yellow was given for that.

Man, I love hearing about that little c**k Archie having a crap game :D

Well we somehow got out of jail.

Arnie f**ked up by starting Hutcho and Kwas but hopefully he can learn from that at the business end of the season.

Basically we were shite and our overly defensive structure was a bit embarrassing.

Ryan 8. Back to top form thankfully.
Bojic 5.5. Some good stuff mixed in with his worst game for 2 years.
Ando. 6.5. Reasonable game.
Dutchy 7. Good but should have closed down better on the first goal.
Rose 7. Probably our best defender and often our best attacker.
Sterj 6. Very overrated.
Hutcho 5. Poor
Monty 6. Possibly his worst game of the season but started well.
WeeMac 6.5. Started brightly then did less than nothing for 30 mins. Really had a dig in the secong 45mis and got usbackinto the game.
Macca 7. Showed up a lot of his younger teammates. Better work rate and better composure.
Kwas 5.5. Poor.

We did improve with Olly and Bernie on and it made a big difference once WeeMac decided to have a a go.

As someone said on twitter it's these games that can make a season.

Yep we were very poor in the first half, but it's not our problem if they can't finish. The best part for me was the way we regained our composure and pushed them all the way in the second half. In the past it would have been game over for us.

It was surely a very disruptive week for the team so I guess we should have expected some of that to show on the field.

Agree that Olly must start as we look so much better when he is on the field. I really appreciate what Kwas has done for us, but he seems to be a step behind everyone else now. Maybe a super goal scoring sub might be a better role now?

As usual they were allowed to do what they wanted while we get pinged for sneezing...same old.

Fox commentators really need to back off us as well. Harper has really been getting stuck in lately. Man he must have been some player given the expert he seems to think he is on everything.

Harper is an oxygen thief.

A little history. He is regarded by many as having a strong input into the demise of the Newcastle Breakers. Apart from the backroom backstabbing, Breakers fans will never forget that in the Club's 2nd last game ever, Harper missed two penalties, resulting in a 0-1 loss at home to Parramatta Power. In the last game ever, the Breakers were thrashed 4-0 by South Melbourne, with Harper eventually subbed off.

I've never forgiven him for that period. And now here he is, pretending to be a football pundit. I'm convinced he hates the Mariners and it shows in his vomit-inducing commentary.
