Caceres. Boom!
Football, so the saying goes, is a game of two halves, but that wasn’t the case today as the Mariners only needed the first 45 minutes to shoot down the low-flying Jets. Splendid goals from Caceres and McBreen, and a towering header from Simon, had the game locked up by the time the sides trooped off to the sheds for the break.
The second half can be summed up in one paragraph: the Mariners allowed the Jets more possession but for all their huffing and puffing they could not blow the Mariners defence down; the Jets tapped on the door, they never looked like hammering it down. When they got close Reddy stood in the way with a ‘Falcon’ save (well, he does come from a rugby league family). Emile Heskey got a yellow for failing to understand the difference between hand-to-ball and ball-to-hand; Ibini gave a nice cameo of his potential with trademark tricks, flicks and pace. Moss paid Caceres a meaningful compliment when he brought on Hutchinson for Montgomery. The Jets hit the post; The Mariners came close to getting a fourth a couple of times. Anderson went off with what looked like a groin strain; the Mariners ended with ten men.
Phil Moss had already given Anthony Caceres a huge vote of confidence after his good play last week by including him in the starting line-up instead of skipper John Hutchinson. Hutch was joined on the bench by Ibini and Duke; Griffiths got the nod over Seip. Caceres rewarded Moss when he scored a quite brilliant goal on 12 minutes. Play to that point had been low key and conservative and then Caceres intercepted the ball, held off the attentions of one defender, sidestepped another and shaped to play to the left before turning inside and unleashing a shot from 25 metres that any cannon would have been proud of. It crashed into the top corner of the net with Birghitti nowhere near it. Too much power! The crown leapt to its feet, Caceres was hoisted aloft by his team mates and the Worldwide Printing Solutions cannon announced its approval. Boom!
The Mariners have not won by more than two goals all season but were well on track when McBreen doubled the advantage with another splendid strike. It was well timed as the Mariners had been unconvincing at the back, Sainsbury in particular casually giving the ball away a couple of times, and Newcastle had floated in some crosses that were too close for comfort. The ball was being given away and then Matt Simon, leading the line superbly, brought order to the proceedings; the ball went to the left, then wide right to Sterjovski, on into the middle where it seemed McBreen and Fitzgerald were getting in each other’s way, but McBreen was calmness itself as he placed a powerful curling shot high into the corner of the net with Birghitti again helpless. Old Golden Boot was back! The cannon agreed. Boom!
A couple of minutes later a marvellous pass from Sterjovski, playing with real quality, set Fitzgerald, playing with confident directness, free but Simon couldn’t quite get purchase on the cross and then Simon, with a delightful curving pass sent Rose away but the opportunity came to nothing.
We were then treated to a moment of high comedy when Anderson got his defending all wrong to allow marquee player Emile Heskey the chance to get it even more wrong; Heskey completely miscuing his shot as an open goal beckoned. Oh, the crowd laughed to see such fun! And they were on their feet again as Matt Simon outjumped everyone to meet Sterjovski’s corner, gained after a scintillating run by Fitzgerald, with a powerful header across the keeper into the far corner of the net. It was Simon’s 38th A League goal, placing him in the all-time top ten of the competition. What a legend! Boom!
As the teams left the field at the 45 I thought Montgomery, another real captain’s knock, and the young Caceres had been outstanding in midfield; Sterjovski’s class and Fitzgerald’s direct play stood out on the flanks; and Simon and McBreen had been a willing and physical handful up front.
This was another game where the still in transition Mariners took another step forward; they were good value for this win, The Jets were well-beaten; the F3 points were never in doubt. For Man of the Match my heart went to Caceres, my head to Fitzgerald, with my heart winning out for that explosive goal. Caceres is my MoM.
