R15 - Western Sydney vs Mariners

Fair dinkum, all the big calls went in our favour, didn't they? Sainsbury not being sent, that penalty not being given, McBreen's 2nd goal.....

I love that WSW get such a big, and passionate crowd – but unfortunately they do seem rather determined to try and beat Victory for having some of the worst behaved fans around, they've ripped flares a few times this season, not to mention some of the problems from preseason. No surprise though, considering the demographic of western sydney.

Too bad there were no streams online - all the usual places were down today.

Usual places were down, but there were other streams. See above.

I thought this was a great game - both to watch and from the boys.

WSW are a class team and deserve to be in the top 4 methinks. This was a real tactical battle which I think Arnie won. Early on the pendulum swung back and forth but you could see by the 2nd half, even before the send off, that the Mariners had an understanding of WSW and what to do about them. And were executing it well. Still with 10 men WSW played with conviction and skill and could have earned a reward for it.
However had CCM put in just half of the shots that skimmed wide they'd have been up 5-0, they deserved the win.
Still room for improvement, a few bits of sloppiness throughout, but a massive improvement already since the Syd game and should be better again next week. Just a shame we won't have Maty against MV who will definitely create tricky shots at goal. But that's for another post.

Ronald MacDonald House is just down the road at Westmead but the best of Maccas’ was on show at the football stadium – Daniel Macca McBreen. Without Tommy Rogic McBreen picked up the slack and played no 10 as well as no 9.
This was a really important win by the Mariners: it was important to emphasise their Premiership credentials against one of the form teams in the competition. The Mariners certainly achieved that with the only criticism being that they didn’t underline their superiority with more goals.
Before a packed boisterous West Sydney crowd on a superb playing surface on a brilliant day in Sydney this was always going to be a good day out for the Mariners and their fans. Early exchanges were even with Trifiro testing the palms of Mat Ryan and Sterjovski and Anderson coming close for the Mariners. Ono almost put Gibbs through then McGlinchey ran at the defence and shot just wide. Sainsbury was lucky not to get a red when he fouled Gibbs but referee Chris Beath adjudged he wasn’t the last defender. The Mariners were beginning to dominate the game, dominating possession. Anderson was superb in defence, Bojic and Rose were getting forward and back, Montgomery and Ollie Bozanic – keeping skipper Hutchinson on the bench – were in total control. McGlinchey was unstoppable and McBreen was everywhere.
A brilliant Bozanic cross field pass to Sainsbury, of all people, was redolent of Patrick Zwaanswijk; Sainsbury, a central defender, skipped own the right wing, played a one-two and got clear in the penalty area, picking out Sterjovski who was squeezed out of the shot. And then came the first of McBreen’s magic moments.
Bozanic pinpointed a sharp pass to McBreen who with great touch moved the ball to Kwasnik and raced for the return; he still had work to do but skilfully, at pace, eluded the defender and burst clear to slot the ball past Covic. It was a brilliant piece of individual skill, the sort of skill that would have the marquee sycophants drooling, but Macca is not a marquee so it will probably go unnoticed. No matter, what it did was underline the class of the Mariners with a deserved opener.
The Wanderers best chance came at the start of the second half when Polenz left Sterjovski for dead but Ono’s shot was cleared off the line by Bojic. Pedj Bojic is the embodiment of the Mariners spirit, he is never beaten, and I make this the third time this season he has denied the opposition on the goal line. He then went on to give an exhibition of his attacking threat twice rampaging down the right leaving Wanderers players trailing in his wake.
When Jason Trifiro got his second yellow you knew the Wanderers could not come back. They were game and determined but the truth is Mat Ryan did not have a shot to save.
At the other end it was a different story as the Mariners, as so often, did everything but score with powerful, skilful inventive football. McGlinchey great on the ball, but with tunnel vision, twice failed to spot the unmarked Bernie Ibini. Then Hutch, on for Monty, orchestrated a break like a NFL quarter back and found Rose on the left; somehow Bernie at the far post failed to make a positive connection. McGlinchey then missed a clear chance pushing his header weakly wide.
Mark Bridge had a penalty claimed denied, correctly, but it was a nervous reminder of the Mariners failure to kill off the opposition. Wellington and Sydney are too fresh in the mind.
Still the Mariners went looking for a second killer goal. Bernie danced past Topor-Stanley but Covic came out to block; Covic saved from McBreen; Sterjovski pushed a shot wide; McGlinchey somehow failed to find Ibini.
Finally McBreen, deep into the deepest time added on, got the second. You can take the boy out of the Central Coast but you can’t take the Coast out of the boy: Ourimbah’s finest, Reece Caira, somehow found a way to pass the ball to McBreen who cheerfully dispatched the gift past Covic.
The Mariners never looked like losing this game; their attitude and professionalism was superb. They emphasised the gulf in class between them and WSW. The 2-0 scoreline didn’t reflect the dominance. It was a very impressive performance.

MoM – can’t go past McBreen
2 points – Anderson – remarkable maturity on such young shoulders
1 pt McGlinchey – WSW really couldn’t lay a glove on him
Plus strong games from Pedj, Ollie, Ryan and Rose

... Sainsbury was lucky not to get a red when he fouled Gibbs but referee Chris Beath adjudged he wasn’t the last defender....

Good writeup but not sure about this bit? I thought it had to be the last defender, and the attacker in a clear goal scoring position... could have been last defender but it was so far out it wasn't a clear goal scoring position?

ummm, me thinks three points goes to clarky!!!
with a 75% capacity squad, (no dutchy or rogic)
and the subs of the subs are fitter and faster than the opposition!

I read somewhere that Bridge had also fouled Sainsbury earlier which caused him to trip. This is why ref did not pull up Sainsbury

He doesn't need to be within shooting range - A few seasons ago a defender was (correctly) sent off close to halfway for this offence.

The difference is that if he's out of shooting range, then the ref needs to have a think about the chance of the other defenders running him down (eg 40 yards out with another defender in line but 10 yards across may not be a red card, but 20 yards out from goal it would be).

Man, what a bloody classy 1st goal from McBreen though...

Pity about the WSW grubs. Thank god the media's been quiet.....I bet the FFA will be too though.

Zac had it covered was flying past them.

Also harsh to be sent when you pull out of the tackle leaving your legs under your body.

Not to mention he kicked it like 10metres ahead and Matty would have very likely been the next man to touch the ball

Whether the tackle was bad/deliberate or not has nothing to do with a red card in this situation, just being a foul. Didn't notice the other things, but all I got to watch was Fox Sports crappy highlights :) NFI what happened to all the streams......

I know we've been pretty lucky a few times with these scenarios.

Different tackle... I made the same mistake in a different discussion. Cap'n is referring to Sainsbury's yellow in the first half, not the tackle that lead to the bottle throwing in the second.

Magic report Roy. I agree with everything you say. Not mentioned was the incident with the ball being called out on our goal line, when in fact it never was. It pretty much summed up WSW's fortunes - so near and yet so far!

That was funny... the mad gesturing going on that the ball was still in, and you could clearly see where it landed... hahaha!

Lucky in that I have seen red often given for similar;
but I am happy to back the ref's judgment ;)
