Its a long way to Mackay if you want to Rocky roll

The Central Coast Mariners pre-season preparations will include a five-day sojourn to central Queensland, following todays confirmation of a pair of trial matches against Queensland State League (QSL) clubs the Capricorn Cougars and the Whitsunday Miners in early June.

The Cougars, based in Rockhampton and the Miners, from Mackay, will each challenge the Mariners within three days across the Queens Birthday holiday weekend, at which time the QSL competition is in recess for one-week.

First up for the Mariners will be the challenge of the Cougars on Friday, 6 June at Jardine Park, before the yellow and navy trek some 350 kilometres north to take on the Miners on Sunday, 8 June at Harrup Park.

"Were very thankful to everyone at Rockhampton and Mackay for making this trip a reality, one that were certain will be most beneficial in conditioning our players ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2008/09 season," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"With our participation in the 2009 AFC Champions League to consider also, we are aware that this campaign will be our most arduous yet every facet of our preparation needs to be spot on.

"To that end, were delighted to have locked away such a beneficial trip to assist us with our preparations.

"Beyond the football side of this trip, we are also very conscious of our responsibility to promote the Hyundai A-League to all corners of the country and we look forward to meeting with the players and football officials of Rockhampton and Mackay during our stay."

After seven rounds of Queenslands ten-team top-tier competition, which is in its inaugural year, the Miners and the Cougars occupy seventh and eighth place respectively.

The Mariners have visited central Queensland on one occasion previously, when Lawrie McKinnas charges took on a Rockhampton Select XI at Ryan Park on 30 April, 2005 one week out from the clubs first ever competitive match against the Newcastle Jets in the first round of the Club World Championship qualifying series.

The Mariners triumphed 4-0 on that occasion, with two goals coming from current Central Coast marksman Nik Mrdja, who is a chance to return to Queenslands eighth most populous city again in June.

Definite starters for the Mariners for next months trip are new recruits Ahmad Elrich and Dylan Macallister, while Dean Heffernan, Mrdja and Matthew Osman, who are each nearing their return from long-term injuries, are possibilities for inclusion.

The Mariners kick off their pre-season program against the Central Coast Lightning at Pluim Park tomorrow, Tuesday, 20 May. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

Mariners set sail for Canberra in late June

After enjoying the sights and sounds of the nations capital for the first time last year, the Central Coast Mariners are set to return to Canberra for a pair of trial matches in late June as part of ongoing preparations for the clubs fourth Hyundai A-League campaign.

The reigning Hyundai A-League Premiers have been invited to the Australian Capital Territory by Capital Football, one of seven grassroots associations served by a partnership with the Mariners.

While in Canberra, the Mariners will playoff against powerhouse local club Belconnen United on Wednesday, 25 June and against the ACT Rockets a representative squad made up of the best players plying their trade in the local ACT Premier League, on Friday, 27 June.

The Mariners will play the ACT Rockets at the newly refurbished Deakin Football Centre and will take on Belconnen United at the Belconnen Soccer Centre, which first hosted Lawrie McKinnas charges almost one year prior to the upcoming fixture.

With the Mariners also confirmed for a sojourn to central Queensland some two weeks before the aforementioned matches in the ACT, the yellow and navys pre-season campaign is shaping up to be their most thorough yet.

"Since formalising an arrangement with Capital Football in November of last year, we have enjoyed an outstanding relationship with our partners in Canberra and our visit in late June will allow us to further develop our ties with Capital Football, footballers in Canberra and the ACT community at large," said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.

"We are extremely thankful to everyone at Capital Football and Belconnen United for making these fixtures a reality and I am certain that our playing squad will benefit from another trip away together ahead of the Hyundai A-League kick off.

"Furthermore, these matches provide the best players from the ACT Premier League with an ideal chance to test themselves against the Premiers of Australia, an opportunity that Im sure will be relished by all wearing the shirts of Belconnen United or the ACT Rockets."

Canberra has traditionally been a happy hunting ground for the Mariners, who recorded back-to-back victories while in the nations capital prior to the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season.

Nik Mrdjas brace in addition to goals from Adam Kwasnik and Damien Brown saw the Mariners home 4-0 against Belconnen United in late June, before the team returned one month later to thrash Sydney FC 3-0 in the final Group B match of the 2007 Pre-Season Cup.

The yellow and navys current line up consists of several players with experience in Canberra, with Damien Brown, Andrew Clark and Nik Mrdja each having played for former National Soccer League club the Canberra Cosmos at various stages before linking with the Mariners.

The Mariners kick off their pre-season program against the Central Coast Lightning at Pluim Park tomorrow, Tuesday, 20 May. Kick off is at 7.30pm.

Mariners trial a coup for league
23/05/2008 8:14:00 AM
FOOTBALL

FORGET the Pay TV reality show Football Superstar, players from the Western Premier League will get to take on the best in the A-League when a representative side from the Central West takes on Central Coast Mariners in Dubbo on June 13.

Football NSW Western Branch administration manager Andrew Fearnley is today awaiting confirmation of the match from the Mariners but he is confident the game will be held under lights at Apex Oval.

The game will be a trial match for the Mariners ahead of the A-League Pre-Season Cup.

It continues the Mariners presence in the Central West as the current A-League minor premiers and grand finalists played two Pre-Season Cup matches in Orange the past two years.

Fearnley and WPL coordinator Jim Auld secured the game with the Western Branch official saying this is a good opportunity for football fans in Dubbo to see the Mariners after they have focused their previous visits on Orange.

We obviously wanted to have a visit (by the Mariners) in the pre-season because of our agreement with them and Dubbo was keen to host it, Fearnley said.

From our perspective, we want to have all of our areas and zones in our branch to have a chance to see the Mariners that they wouldnt normally have.

Orange City Council Sports Committee chairman Jason Hamling sees no problem with the game being held in Dubbo after the Colour City had established a healthy relationship with the Mariners.

Players from Oranges two WPL teams, Waratahs and Canobolas Rangers, could get the chance to take on the Mariners with the side for the match to be announced next week.

The fixture has been in the pipeline for two years and Auld is confident it will help build footballs position in the Central West sporting landscape.

Its something that we always thought we could pull off but its taken some time to finetune all the details, Auld said.

The A League competition is going from strength to strength and the interest in football is growing as well.

Orana Spurs coach Albi Mastellotto will be in charge of the Western Premier League team.

Fearnley and Auld were pushing to have two trials staged in the Central West with the second to be held in either Orange or Bathurst.

The second fixture was impossible to fit into the Mariners pre-season schedule as the Gosford-based side will also travel to Canberra and central Queensland as part of their A-League preparations.

Trial called off, for now
BY ANNA YEO

The Central Coast Mariners have withdrawn from the trial match against Western Premier League Select that was to be played on June 13 at Dubbos Apex Oval.

Western NSW Football administration manager Andrew Fearnley said the success of the Mariners players has in part led to them pulling out of the fixture.

Matt Simon and Mile Jedinak have been named as part of the Socceroos squad to take part in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in June and hence they would be ruled out from the Dubbo fixture, Mr Fearnley said.

Also with the Olympic squad upping their training with camps, a number of players in the Mariners hage now been included in pressing for selection into the Olympic team.

Combined with delayed return from injury from players including Dean Heffernan, and the delayed arrival of new signings such as Adrian Cacreres the Mariners were left with only 10 to 11 players from their senior squad, he said.

Western Premier Soccer League co-ordinator Jim Auld said it is disappointing that the game can not go forward.

Naturally the players and the western clubs are disappointed the event couldnt go forward, but sometimes these situations are unavoidable and out of everyones control, Mr Auld said.

A Mariners spokesperson said there was still scope for the event to go forward in the future.

Unfortunately due to circumstances with the lack of players available, the Mariners will be unable to play the exhibition match in Dubbo, the Spokesperson said.

We remain committed however in nurturing our western NSW football counterparts and there is scope for the match to happen in coming seasons, they said.

Mr Fearnley said discussions are ongoing with the Central Coast Mariners about looking at alternative options for game dates.

Although time constraints leading into the A-League season four with Pre-Season Cup may prove difficult in attracting a trial match to the Western NSW area in 2008.

According to the Mariners website, Andrew Redmayne was the goalkeeper for the entire game for the Cougars and Matty completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in injury time. Thought it was a bit strange that Sasho was the only player that didn't get a run tonight though.

Looks like we would have lined up something like this:

          Matty    Macca
  Kwas  Hutch  Porter  Elrich
D'appuzo  Boogs  Wilko  Clarky
                  Trott
