I actually had a decent stream last night. No lag or stoppages which was great. Ok thoughts on the game. We were woeful. Bad passing all over the pitch. I lost count of how many times the ball was turned over to the opposition by a direct pass to them. In one example Hutch back passed to a player which almost resulted in a goal. Thankfully it hit the woodwork

If I was Arnie I would be tearing shreds of our central defence behind closed doors. Too many times we were caught short in the centre. I fear that some of the quicker A League players are going to overrun our defence this year. Having Pasfield in goal scares the bejesus out of me. So many times out of position as was shown with the lob from halfway. Just poor goalkeeping. I know that some people will say that he deserves to start, but deserving based on being at the club the longest and earning it based on skill are two different things. Has he earned the right to play ahead of Reddy (I threw up in my mouth typing this)?

I get the sense that Trent is missing the guidance and presence of Zwanny next to him. It will be an interesting season for Trent. He has to show that last season was not a one off. Seip and Zac will have a good battle to fill the spot next to him but I don't expect too much from either of them to be honest. Storm will be a sensation this season. Very good to watch. Rosey still has a motor but needs to fix his crossing into the box.

I would like to see Caceras start ahead of Monty TBH. I think he is a better distributor of the ball and has better pace which is what we may need come the start of the season. A couple of times last night it looked like Monty was unsure who to pass to when he got the ball.

The front half of the pitch was great. Flores was constantly calling and looking for the ball. He looks much fitter and the better for the preseason thus far. He didn't mind dropping a bit deeper to challenge for the ball. Great signs with two goals.

Fitzy will be a revelation this season. He just needs to finish the chances when they are presented to him. Dukey seems to be adjusting well to the wide position and will terrorise a lot of defences this year. All up our goal scoring stocks are looking fantastic for the season. the same cant be said for our central defence at this stage unfortunately.

As to the standard of refereeing last night I am sure the ref was on the take. Two clear penalties to Fitzy waved away and a very very soft second yellow and subsequent red to Flores. 2 minutes off added time turned into 3 minutes with Persib equalizing on the last kick of the game (funny that). Despite that it does not hide the fact that we were woeful in goals and our central defence needs improving.

Thats pretty much how I saw the game too Muppet. Some great moments attacking but defence really needs work. I though Trent was good and his distrobution was the best of the defenders. Though Zac didn't know what to do with ball. And yes some really poor passing from the midfield. But...

Flores and Fitzy were on fire. some of their passes were amazing. I can't wait for the season to start.

Thanks for the overview. Some good signs and was a game that we needed i think. I'm not overly worried about the defence and GK, there is nothing that can't be fixed. There is still 3 weeks before the start of the season and we have a few more games. Looks like Storm is a great prospect and we know that Trent and Rosey are quality. I'm sure Seip will do a good job for us and Ando will be pushing hard for a starting place. Monty and Hutch are 2 of the best defensive mids in the A league and they protect our back 4 as well. As far as keepers go, JP played a few games in the A league last year and was pretty much faultless, though i must admit that this is the one area where we are weaker than last year. Either JP or Reddy won't be the worst keepers in the league.

Fitzy sounds like he is having a terrific pre-season - He's at the age where the maturity is kicking in & has been playing regularly to get some consistency. Think he will really kick on this year.

Haven't heard much of Wee-Mac - has he been injured? just quite? just not reported or is fitzy playing his role?

I did see an interview with Arnie after the match where he said that they had been working on the attacking side of things and now was the time they turned their attention to the defensive side. Just in time I think.

After looking at the goals, to be fair to JP the lob was just a freaky goal and it came from us giving away the ball in midfield. IMO he wasn't out of position, any keeper would be at the edge of his area when the ball is in the oppositions half. There wasn't too much he could have done about the other 2 either.

It wasn't just the goals, though. He was out of position all night and made several poor decisions. Honestly, Reddy looked much better on the weekend compared to JP last night, as disgusting a thought as that may be.

Plus I totally agree with what Muppet said. Defending needs work, but lets hope that it is just their time to focus on defence in the last three weeks. Shinjo Ono and Hersi are gonna have a field day if our defence doesn't improve.

Aaah, ok. We ll that is a bit more concerning but i still have faith that whoever gets the job will go well. :) It's the optimist in me. And faith in our coaching staff who rarely get it wrong.

I'm with ya, and I do have faith in JP, I know how good he can be. Bloke was flawless last season in the games he did play, but the guy I've seen in preseason just isn't the same guy. Pressure or something is getting to him. Nice beard he has going on at the moment though, I'll give him that.

This clears it up, but wow...
Arnold confirmed he will leave Indonesia on Wednesday accompanied by eight players to ensure the Club completes two fixtures on Sunday 29 September – a friendly against Newcastle Jets in Tamworth, and the 2013 Menpora Cup Final against the yet to be determined winner of Group B.
“We’ve got a duty and an obligation to fulfil back at home against Newcastle on Sunday,” Arnold said. “I’ll be flying home tomorrow with eight players, Adam Kwasnik is back in Australia fit and ready to go, so there’s nine players, plus a couple of our youth team boys will make up the numbers. We’ve got an obligation to give Newcastle a tough game and we will.”
“Phil Moss will do the Final on Sunday. They moved the date back from the 28th to the 29th which we weren’t so happy about but at the end of the day we are playing for USD$75,000 and there’s some good prize money available that everyone needs.”
The original Menpora Cup dates were pushed back which produced the clash with the Jets game. I'd actually wondered if, having factored in the tournament for necessary pre-season load, the plan was to go but blow the final if we made it through to get back for our last A-League opponent trial.

Big ask for one squad to play two simultaneous games. Bringing eight home leaves twelve, so a bench of only one outfield player for a final in the tropics! Who will be the ones to stay? (I'd assume the prizemoney is important to the club).
Hope 'the twelve' can do the job. The others might get dusted up by Newcastle, leaving us one from three against A-League teams - probably attracting derision from other clubs / media... but these are trials.
Then we'll go out and flog WSW on Oct 12 (yes, in front of impressive away support) :overheadl:All is right with the world :)

Who cares about preseason results? It is all about getting the team to click together on the same page and getting match fitness up. Performance is more important than results. If we lose like 5-0 to Scum then I might be worried, but if we play decent and lose 2-0 or 2-1 or something then not worried at all.

Besides, more important to beat the Scum three times during the season than once in the preseason.

I can see either Hutch or Monty going back home, though. Filling the midfield is tough, we've got depth for two squads just about everywhere else.

Reddy start at Tamworth.
Neill, Griffiths, Morton and Anderson to play at Tamworth.
Caceres and Hutch will likely stay in Indonesia, Monty and someone else to start in Tamworth.
Mile, Kwassie, young bloke Slater to all play at Tamworth I reckon.

I would hardly call the Persib second goal a lob...it was an excellent, cheeky full blooded shot.
We were woeful? But the front half was great?
Typical pre-season; clearly focussed on the attacking side of the game - lots to like there - and defensively we will be much better when it all kicks off in earnest.
Love the way Fitzgerald is making a strong challenge for a first team start; love Flores; love the way whatever the front half combo that starts it always looks exciting. Love Storm Roux. Lots to Love.
Agree Sainsbury has to assume leadership of the back four - but he did pull out a helluva block.
