saw the bloke that got 20 years on tele. Sickening low life. He should also be forced to live with Craig Foster for the first 10 as part of his punishment, if the cops don't charge him first.
2 others were banned for 5 years and 1 for two years btw.

and Rebecca Wilson for the second 10 years

I have time for the fair dinkum hard men in the game, but the gutless cheap shot wannabees have no place in any sport. Les Boyd comes to mind. He ended up banned out of the game, even back when puch ups were more prevelant.
Blokes that would play on with broken bones, not take a backward step from anyone but without cheap shots in their games.
Ray Price, (passion personified) Noel Kelly, Terry Randall, Malcom Reilly, (one of the hardest poms) Ian Roberts (unless you called him him gay, then he'd try to kill you) Dallas Johnson, Trevor Gillmeister, John Sattler, Terry Panowitz
Tommy Raudonikis (toughest little bloke i've seen. But not the smartest) Peter Dimond, David Gillespie, Arthur Beetson.
In modern times Petero Civoniceva (tough as nails but liked by everyone that's played with or against him. A gentleman) and Danny Buderus. One of the toughest but cleanest small men I've ever seen play. Gorden Tallis (crazy but fair, and only because he could make the Brit Lions hard men whimper)

Aleagues version of a wanna be hard man, but only a cheap shot merchant is Muscat. Tiatto is as tough as nails but his his stupid brains snaps puts him in the wrong category.

Results 'fixed' in betting swindle

Eamonn Duff, Jessica Halloran and Jacquelin Magnay | September 26, 2009

THE Sydney Roosters are bracing for a police investigation into an alleged betting scam surrounding the rugby league club's last home game of the season.

A bitter split has emerged at the eastern suburbs club over the circumstances of the round 26 game between the Roosters and the North Queensland Cowboys at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Bookmakers suspended betting three times before the game after a splurge of bets backed the Cowboys to win by more than 13 points. Extraordinarily, there was little interest in a straight Cowboys win.

The Herald is aware of one punter who outlaid $1500 after hearing, through Roosters associates, that a 13-point-plus loss was ''a sure thing''. He cashed in after the Roosters surrendered a 16-0 half-time lead to lose 32-16.

In the weeks since the September 6 game, players have been pointing fingers at each other and ostracising some teammates.

They are furious that a small group of Roosters ''celebrated'' the loss by visiting a brothel and enjoying the free services of prostitutes.

One player openly accused a teammate of getting some kind of kickback. ''I'm aware that several of the players have been up there [to the brothel] on a weekly basis throughout the year.

''On occasions they are receiving free services. I don't know why or how that works. Why you would want to involve yourself in those types of circles when you are a professional sportsman, I do not know.''

The player told the Herald he was stunned by claims within the club that results were being manipulated. But on reflection, he noted there was one player ''who would do it'', adding several others were young and impressionable. ''Now, looking back, I can't say that it didn't happen.''

Questions have been raised about several games but it is the circumstances surrounding the final home game that has everyone talking.

On the morning of the match, The Sun-Herald revealed that the nation's biggest sports agency, TAB Sportsbet, had suspended betting because of the weight of money on the Cowboys winning by more than 13 points.

''We've got a lot of worries about the betting activity on this game,'' a TAB spokesman, Glenn Munsie, said at the time.

Sources close to the club claim there has been an arrangement in place for several years involving a Roosters scout who offers to supplement the wages of younger players with bonus payments in order to aid exotic bets.

The source said that because those requests were not intended to alter the end result (rather influencing the losing margins or the half-time result), it was easier to draw the youngsters in.
''It's been happening for years. You can take it as being 120 per cent,'' he said.

The Roosters chief executive, Steve Noyce, said if every rumour in the code was investigated it would be a full-time job and that was not really the club's function.

''Brothels are legal. I am not aware of any specific allegation that any Roosters people are owed favours,'' he said. ''The bookies were stung and suddenly the talk is that players are throwing games.''

Under NRL rules it is illegal for players and officials to be involved in betting. It is also incumbent on anyone with information to come forward.

The NRL chief executive, David Gallop, said the NRL had initiated some early inquiries about the match - the only time it had done so all season - but did not have sufficient information to launch an investigation.

''If there was information, of course we would look at it and we would expect co-operation from the authorities.''

NSW police are adamant that nobody within their ranks has officially contacted the club and that a complaint from the public has not been lodged.

But the Herald understands at least one senior Roosters official has received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the police and warning them that players could be quizzed.

Manly NRL player Brett Stewart will face a committal hearing over allegations he sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl.

Still, higher crowds and bigger T.V ratings :s

On another note a friend of mine was working for a charity dinner and was in charge of organising items to be auctioned of to raise money. 5 Sydney NRL clubs offered signed jerseys and even tried to organise player appearances, while the mariners sent a signed soccer ball( and from what i heard really had to be pressured into doing so). The NRL might be facing a lot of field issues with drinking, violence ect but it seems there working dam hard to rectify there image.

And they are still at it - yes, another attack on a  woman. From the SMH

Waqa stood down after being charged by police
Sydney Roosters have stood down front-rower Stanley Waqa after he was charged over a knife-wielding incident in which a young woman was wounded in Sydney's east.

Police say Waqa, 21, and a woman were heard arguing inside a unit in Mulwarree Avenue, Randwick, about 11am (AEDT) on Wednesday.

During the argument, he allegedly armed himself with a knife and swung at the 20-year-old.

Neighbours called the police who arrested Waqa and later charged him with recklessly wounding another person and granted him conditional bail.

He is expected to appear in Waverley Local Court on Thursday.

The woman suffered a laceration to her finger and was treated at the scene before she was taken by ambulance to Prince of Wales Hospital in a stable condition.

The incident continues a horrific year for the Roosters who finished the season as the NRL wooden-spooners and with an even worse off-field record for player behaviour.

Waqa, 21, joins the likes of Willie Mason, Nate Myles, Jake Friend, Anthony Cherrington, Sandor Earl and Setaimata Sa in being reprimanded by the club for off-field troubles in the past 12 months.

"The Sydney Roosters have today stood down front-rower Stanley Waqa after an incident this morning led to him being charged," said the club in a statement.

"Whilst the matter is now under investigation by the Maroubra Police, the club will be taking swift and decisive action when the full facts of the case are known.

"The club will continue to cooperate with the police and at this time there will be no further comment."

Waqa played just nine NRL games for the Roosters in 2009.

You're right. I do wonder sometimes whether A-League clubs try hard enough to contribute to charities and the like.

I am English and I had hardly heard of RL before coming here.

Its a minor variation of Rugby that is unlikely to survive in its current form over say the next 20 odd years.

I too hail from Pommyland, arriving by boat aged 12 many years ago. Prior to arriving in NSW, I never knew Rugby League existed. Despite playing Rugby (Union) at school in England, all the talk there was football, and I still have my 1960's trading cards of Man U, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

Unfortunately, Thugby League has a strong grip in NSW and north of the border. As an impressionable youth, I flirted with League for a season or two during my senior years at school, even playing University Shield until converting back to football after one to many spear tackles into a concrete ground. I followed both the Sydney RL comp (there was no national comp then of course), and the local RL comp for a few years, but I knew my heart was not in it.

The pull of the true beautiful football code was far too strong. I attended exhibition matches against visiting UK teams. Local (Newcastle) football was (and continues to be) appallingly managed and promoted, so I had no real interest, apart from attending the Grand Finals.

Having gone to Booragul High (now Lake Macquarie High) football was the major code, and was of more interest to me than even the local 1st Division comp. I have very fond memories of cold, foggy winter nights at Macquarie Field for the Tasman Cup Finals, and lazy summer days at school kicking a tennis ball with the Cowburns, Tredinnicks, Malcolm McClelland, Michael Boogaard, and a little nipper called Craig Johnston. All of which turned out in later years for KB United and beyond.

Finally the NSL arrived, and I was in heaven. I frantically organised a work transfer from Goulburn back the Newcastle in time for KB United's debut, and apart from a spell in the wilderness after the demise of the Newcastle Breakers until the arrival of the Mariners, I've followed the National League with a passion, and overseas football with interest ever since.

As for League - I usually mow the lawn during the Grand Final - couldn't give a toss. No, worse than that, the over hyping of League gives me the total shits.

An old favourite, new trick

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/league-news/carney-accused-of-setting-mans-pants-alight-20100104-lq0y.html

Rugby league player Todd Carney reportedly injured a man by setting his pants on fire in an incident on New Year's Eve.

The Seven Network reported the footballer, who has a history of behavioural problems, and a companion deliberately set the man's pants on fire, burning his buttocks, scrotum and upper thigh.

The alleged incident occurred at Airlie Beach in North Queensland.
