Tactically Mulvey absolutely butchered that second half playing 5-2-2. They destroyed us in midfield from the outset.

Should we have considered, wait for it, Simon at CB rather than Melling?

We could have considered not throwing fifty percent of our players in the backline while still leaving two up front.

Like mentioned previously we should have subbed a striker off, probably Simon. Hiariej on was vital given his experience and could have done a job at centre back. In that situation Tommy could have offered stability.

Essentially then you are not changing the structure you have worked on all week, especially defensively.

Instead Mulvey went for some weird ass structure that you bet wasn’t worked on in training. We were absolutely ass raped in the beginning of that second half. No one had any idea what they were doing.

A good team has a system for when they are one man up or one man down, that is practiced at training.

We can’t even settle on a style with eleven men and then produce that abomination when we lose a player.

I was thinking Simon or Murray would be sacrificed to maintain the order in the middle and back. Murray more likely to make something by himself or on the counter, Simon more likely to hold the ball up that end and waste time so take your pick depending on what else you’re setting up.

Might be an unpopular opinion but for his limited game time and down to 10 I thought Tom H would show more urgency. He looked decent on the ball but his defending wasn’t amazing and I think at one point he was out run (maybe by ninko with 70+ minutes in his legs) with a run that ended up in the 6 yard box. He got caught trying to hold an area and not a man a few times too. But we’ll need him for the next game and I really hope he brings his A game for a few weeks to cement him in the starting line up and give us our best chance.

He has been out coached at halftime on our two decent first halves.

Our tactics against Newy where Derby war games for 1st half. Newy weren’t ready. Then second half they come out better prepared and dominate us.

Same mentality against Sydney but a little skill and combination thrown in but to not sacrifice one of the two was crazy. And don’t forget Murray is not a winger on any day. He also had his bench wrong. He had no CB cover when playing a back 3. Inexcusable.
Then halftime came again and Sydney came out with a revised plan while we stick to a dumb formation. Every one knows you play a strick deep 4 4 1 with 10 players. His formation was criminal. Remember City dominated us with 10 last year.

Then the goal so early. You could see every player and fan go oh no hear we go. Then we lost the game in the next 20mins between the ears

I remember how long it took the team to be comfortable with a change from a narrow diamond under Arnie. It was a struggle for weeks.
However we seem now to be changing structure at the drop of a hat and then are surprised the team struggles.
No one knows where they are supposed to be.
Poor coaching.

It was at this point that I started to think the calf injury was not a complete ruse. Tom is quicker than that - I think he was holding back. The game was gone and I think he may have been protecting his body.

You concede 3 in 15 mins with your revised formation, so you swap your tall striker for your tiny one and your fit and firing left winger for your unfit one, leaving your best player on the bench.

I hope so because it wasn't impressive
