Merged Thread - Danny Vukovic Red Card (outcome page 42)

Danny is appealing the severity of the punishment, but also the charge.

Because it is a offence on the ref as soon as the ffa decides it it goes to all FIFA competitions.

Reading today the paper seems to suggest that since the appeal has taken so long it will likely be looking in danny's favour. Though not suggesting how much so. Apparently, the independent tribunal was much more responsive to danny's defence.

I think hall getting just 7 weeks suspension in this time will help danny's case.

AFTER two months of heartache, Danny Vukovic could finally learn today whether his Olympic flame is still flickering.

The Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper departs for a much-needed week-long holiday to Hamilton Island still unsure of his fate.

Football Federation Australia is expected to announce its independent panel's verdict, some two weeks after Vukovic's second appeal for striking a referee.

It is exactly two months to the day he struck referee Mark Shield on the arm in the Mariners' controversial grand final loss to Newcastle.

Presently Vukovic - Australia Under-23's first-choice keeper - would miss Beijing 2008, with FIFA almost certain to verify the same ruling.

Vukovic was banned for nine months, with a further six months suspended. That ban was reduced to three months at the first appeal.

Vukovic's advocate, former Attorney-General of Australia Bob Ellicott, QC, constructed a compelling case. While not condoning his actions, among Ellicott's arguments was that missing the Olympics was a heavy price to pay for the 23-year-old's indiscretion.

For Vukovic to have any chance of playing in Beijing, which begins on August 7, his sentence must be reduced to at least five months.

The independent appeals committee of FFA has deliberated for two weeks after a decision was reserved at the second appeal - following a 4 hour sitting.

While it is difficult to pre-empt the panel's decision, sources closely tracking the case believe the longer it goes, the greater Vukovic's chances of a reduction.

Its understood the panel, consisting of John Sackar, QC, Michael Christie and former NSL player Jeromy Harris, was much more responsive to Vukovic's legal team on this occasion.

Once a decision is reached, FFA is duty-bound to forward the recommendation on to FIFA and the Australian Olympic Committee.

The 18-man Olyroos squad is due to be selected on July 4.

cant wait for this day to be over ! :)

The independent Appeals Committee, arising from the red card (send off) offence of Danny Vukovic (Central Coast Mariners) at the Hyundai A-League 2008 Grand Final on 24 February 2008, handed down its decision today.

The committee, comprised of John Sackar QC, Michael Christie SC and former professional player, Jeromy Harris, heard the appeal by Vukovic represented by Bob Ellicott QC on 10 April.

The Appeals Committee decided that Vukovic be suspended from all games up to 24 June 2008 and from all games from 29 August 5 October 2008 inclusive.

The Appeals Committee also decided that Vukovic should not play in any games from 6 October 2008 25 January 2009 inclusive, with the latter penalty to be suspended subject to no further infringement in the period up to, and including 25 January 2009.

The Appeals Committee also fined Vukovic $10,000 to be paid to the FFA.

The Appeals Committee decision overturns the original suspension of the independent Match Review Panel in February which banned Vukovic for 15 months (of which six months was suspended), a sentence reduced to 12 months (with three months suspended) last month by the independent Disciplinary Committee.

Under FFA regulations, the independent Appeals Committee may impose a range of sanctions and determine the scope and duration of the sanction.

The effect of the Appeals Committee decision means that Vukovic will not be eligible to play in the Hyundai A-League competition again until 6 October 2008, but he is eligible for selection to the Australian Olympic team.
