McBreen to Mariners

Even though I like the way he plays at 32yrs old how will this help the Mariners? We already have  2 transitional retirees. We really need a brosque type player

Classic Lawrie signing.

It's positive and negetive - good player, wrong age bracket.

Strong, good hold up, can finish. Agree with elevated though, would much prefer someone younger, faster.

he's probably not on all that much coin at that age.

classic salary-cap-aware signing. known player, known quantity, minimal risk. when you've got ~$2mill across 23 players there's not much room for a gamble.

taking a low-risk, low-cost signing like this leaves room open for more 'interesting' signings.

This poses a big question IMO.

Is he meant to be striker #3? That is to say ...

Striker #1 = Simon
Striker #2 = Kwasnik
Striker #3 = McBreen
Striker #4 = Mrdja / other?

If so, I would suggest he's not that strong?

True, I was thinking along the same lines. Here's hoping no injuries come his way for the remainder of the season. Look forward to seeing him in our strip paired up with Matty next season.

Though when you mention "interesting signings" is there something you're not divulging?? ;) I'd personally like to see a marque player for next season. I think we've been pretty conservative in that area, AND doesn't come under the cap. Obviously for financial reasons (re club's future stability& viability), this hasn't happened (except for Aloi$i)..... and $$ have been put towards the COE. But I'll keep my fingers crossed!! ;)

I've got exactly no inside info - frankly peeps like Jaza and Deej are the ones I'd be tapping for that. They've got a good record on these things.

I probably agree. Regardless - that's a little weak for your top 3 forwards IMO? I haven't bought in to the McBreen hype like Fox seem to. A shitload of effort, and some good target man play, but a lot of missed chances. Has also failed trials previously with AUFC and WPFC.

That said, I'm guessing he'd be on a low-mid six-figure salary (i.e. around the league average next year of ~$120kpa), which combined with your other forwards means that you'd have a bit of dough to spend elsewhere.

the "dough" is being freed up to spend a nice chunk of the cap on another striker

Dylan is there as well. I think he's off contract at end of this season. Maybe a replacement for him if we are letting him go. He hasn't really been featuring for us (obviously he's had injuries as well).

So perhaps the release of a couple of strikers then. Dyl/mrdja/elrich??? We will see i guess

Actually it would make sense if all three of those left (Macallister, Mrdja, Elrich), then bring in McBreen + new forward, and essentially put Kwasnik in the Elrich role (backup winger + backup forward in one).

and plenty of coin between those three players

very much doubt that macallister will be here next season and the other two are currently playing for contracts

also, there is still plenty of time before next season and we still do not know which of our current players may move to other clubs

there is always the possibility that travis, simon and danny will not be here january let alone next season

I think Elrich may be retained; he's made significant progress since his terrible injury and if he continues to improve I think Lawrie will stand by him. McAllister said some time ago that he may go back to Europe (his wife is Norwegian?) so I expect him (poss in January) and Mrdja to go. McBreen is good cover for both - he'll defend from the front much better than Mrdja and he is bound to score more goals than McAllister; he can play alongside Simon or can cover for Simon. Good signing, good attitude, good work ethic. He'll do.

[/quote]I said it earlier in the year that danny for danny's benefit needs to move on and as he has a year left is money for the pot. Matty with two years left is also money for the pot.
This would free up some money for the likes of Travis and maybe a new striker combination.
Infact we could end up having mass movements, Mrjda.Elrich, Dmac,Hutch as well as Danny and Simon.
And if that happens I predict LM to sign a new 4/5 yr contract as this would allow him to overseer the developement and blending of the yoof into the top side, the building of the COE
and then he will be remembered as the manager who actually "built " a club.

NQ forum is saying that he rejected a deal for $150K at Nth Quensland so you would imagine that he came here for around that figure.
