Matt Simon signs with Sydney FC

Know this was mentioned in the Zac Anderson thread, cant believe he hasn't got his own thread considering he's a homegrown Coastie, so.................

As Dibo mentioned in the ZA thread the reactions on the Syd Forum are hillarious. Here's a few of my fave's.

"My wife calls him "that f**kn bird face" due to his uncanny resemblance to a Seagull. "
MSSG_zpshtihhbk3.jpg

"My understanding was that the only reason Simon left CCM is that he was asking for too much. If he's willing to play for the bare minimum here, why not up there?"

"Apparently Simon turned down a 30% higher 2 year deal at Perth to sign with us."

"Maybe he remembered training with Stu Musialik? It's not unreasonable to think he might've burnt bridges up there during negotiations, had a harsh reality check by finding out he's not worth what he thinks on the open market, then adjusted expectations accordingly."

"Being paid between $50-70k"

Oh & they're calling him the "Wizard from Woy Woy" :vhappy:

I was told he did play with Wyoming Tigers early on in the juniors but then mostly at East Gosford Rams.

Seems majority south of the Hawksbury aren't happy with signing 'a mongrel' like Matty Simon who's only skill is 'tackling goal-keepers' &'tap-ins'

Can understand him not wanting to go to Perth, considering supposed complications surrounding the birth of his first child, wanting to be closer to family on both sides who are on the C.Coast. Newy or Syd being preferred options.

If any of the rumored $$$'s are even close I'm still baffled as to why we didnt keep him. Even for that extra dimension to our game.

ESPECIALLY if Walmsley’s 'plan' doesn't pan out as he envisions it.

Hope he makes a mockery of the Sydney fans, as some of them have already pointed out "Matt Simon will make derbies with WSW one game not to miss"

Wishing you all the luck in the world.... Ohhhhhh Matty Simon
Matty, Matty, Matty, Matty - Siiiiiiimon !

Sydney throw Simon a lifeline:

Sydney FC have thrown a lifeline to striker Matt Simon, signing the fomer Central Coast Mariners stalwart to a one-year deal.

Simon, who is a free agent, penned a contract with the Sky Blues on Monday afternoon, a deal which will see him reunited with former Mariners boss Graham Arnold.

The towering target man has been on a two-week trial with the club and scored and assisted in their recent 5-1 pre-season victory against Macarthur Rams.

"I'm excited to have signed for Sydney FC and I'm hugely thankful to have been given the opportunity by the club," Simon said.

"Last season was a tough year, I missed all of pre-season due to personal reasons and had a couple of injuries towards the end of the year, so was disappointed to be released.

"I see this as a fresh start and with a full pre-season under my belt, I'm confident I can produce my best form playing for one of Australia's premier clubs.

"Competing for three trophies, including the Asian Champions League was a huge lure in joining Sydney FC and I can't wait to play in front of their fantastic Members and fans at Allianz Stadium."

The 29-year-old has made over 150 appearances in the A-League and is the Mariners' record scorer with 45 goals. He spent eight seasons with the Gosford outfit before being released at the end of the last campaign which saw the Mariners finish 8th.

Arnold praised the signing and said he was pleased to have Simon within the Sky Blues ranks.

"Matt is quality player and has exceptional personal attributes as well. He gives us something completely different to what we already have up front and he has done extremely well for us in the last two weeks.

"He is aggressive and strong, his attitude is first class and I'm sure he'll be a success at Sydney FC this season.

"Competing across three competitions this year we need depth across all parts of the field and I'm confident he will complement our squad."

Simon will go straight into the Sky Blues squad to face Sorrento FC in the Westfield FFA Cup on Wednesday night (kick off 8.30pm AEDT), alongside youngster Max Burgess who returns as part of the Cup squad and the Foxtel National Youth League competition following a brief spell at the Newcastle Jets at the end of season 2014/15.

Shame. Would have loved to have kept Matty. Will be interesting to see if we regret this decision especially in light of the fact we haven't been able to recruit players we expected to such as the Everton forward (could still be coming?) and Dawson.I wish him well but hope he doesn't play against us,in a strong Sydney side that could be painful to watch.

Guess we'll see what we've lost tomorrow night in the FFA Cup when Syd FC play Sorrento over in Perth.

It's the televised game on Fox & I feel Arnie will hive Matty a bit of time in the game considering a lot of their foreign players have just arrived by comparison & may not have the legs yet.

I wish him well, but I still don't think we've made the wrong call in cutting him. If he convinces me otherwise this year then fair play to him.

I tended to agree at the time thinking we would have a decent replacement by now. Time will tell but we are still a good striker short in my eyes, maybe 2. If Roy O'D gets injured who do else we really have? Bingham? I'm sure TW is on it but with minimal dollars to play with we will probably be taking a chance with another young one. Danny for one more season could be an option?

Good luck to him, wish him well though I think the club made the right call in letting him go. I would possibly have kept him at a low wage if agreeable but I am happy enough for us to start bringing through younger guys with something to prove. I'm also happy to to see some new strikers that we have already picked up. Matty was always a decent worker and has club record for goals but he is in no way prolific and I feel he has had enough chance to show what he can do. All the best to him though.

I reckon he will have a good year.
Better service down at the pension Mariners and still would have got no service here.
People can say he didn't score but he was never given any quality ball. It wasn't like he was misford just missing unmissable goals.

Let's see how much we really love him because it's just a matter of time before he is kicking our guys although a few might be hoping bosnar is on the end of a couple of challenges.

Shame hutch is retired, would have been grate watching him and Simon kick shit out of each other then get up and smile. Monty it's now up to you.

McBreen would cost a bare minimum of $100k, maybe more, to reach his 'how low will i go' price. Would easily get double that playing for LadyBoy FC in the Thai League.

Glad for Matty S. GA would enjoy signing him just to niggle CCM I think. Doesn't seem to hold much love for the club after Mossy's sacking.

I agree with Uniteds No9 though. Rather see the next young striker like Bingham get his chance. It also seems to me we are looking at something a bit different in how we are approaching our attack this year. Chiefly, speed over physicality.

Taped the game & just watched it. To be fair to Matty they showed about 5 mins of him after subbing-on, then cut to another ffa cup game as syd fc had it wrapped up.

Albeit he shoved one defender to the ground when making a run into the box. C'mon he's Matt Simon. ;)

I'll play "wait-n-see".

Simon grateful for Sydney's second chance:
470045978_1.jpg
Matt Simon is only 29 years old so it may be an exaggeration to say he was in the last chance saloon after he was released by Central Coast Mariners.

But Simon is a Central Coast local and to outsiders, it appeared that as long as he was in the A-League, he would be at the Mariners.

So it proved to be, when Simon returned home after an unsuccessful spell at Jeonnam Dragons in Korea. He re-joined the Mariners and played the past two seasons in Gosford before the club released him at the end of the last campaign.

The centre forward, who is the Mariners’ top scorer of all time with 45 goals from 144 games, had options overseas, but Simon said when he learned of interest from Sydney FC, there was only one option on the table.

“I was hanging out for a little bit, and having a bit of a break,” Simon said.

Simon and Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold worked together at the Mariners from 2010 to 2012, and it was Arnold himself who picked up the phone and invited Simon to trial with last season’s A-League grand finalist.

Simon scored in a trial game against Macarthur Rams, and soon after, the club announced he had signed a one-year deal for the upcoming campaign.

“I know how Arnie works and he knows how I work,” Simon said.

“I was really excited to come to a big club like Sydney. With people like Andrew Clark and Steve Corica here, and players like Alex Brosque and Shane Smeltz, hopefully I will learn a lot from them.

“It’s a huge club. Arnie is really professional and the intensity of training is really high. I think every player in this squad is capable of being in the first team.”

Veteran striker Smeltz has the chance to take centre stage this season, after spending last season in the sizeable shadow of Marc Janko, who has since moved to FC Basel.

Janko scored a club-record 16 goals last season, but Smeltz still managed eight with limited opportunities.

The A-League’s all-time second top scorer signed a two-year extension to fill the Janko void, but Simon will push him hard for a spot in the starting side.

“Smeltz is one of the best finishers the A-League has had,” Simon said.

“You can see his class in training and obviously I want to watch closely and learn some stuff.

“I’m just really excited to be part of this huge club, and be part of the squad the club has put together. I’m really happy that Sydney have given me an opportunity.”
