Mariners vs Vissel Kobe 26 Nov ACL Elite

Comments about that not being their first 11 are all well and good but let’s not even try and pretend the aleague is on the same level as the J1. If Liverpool or City (well, maybe not so much city at the moment) put out a ‘second string’ side in a cup game against Salford or Grimsby, you’d still very much be backing the premier league side to win.
Still had 5 players from their last ACL starting 11 starting against us, and plenty of firepower off the bench.
I actually thought we'd get a 4-0 spanking

But they are not Liverpool or City, they are J-League. Not one of that starting eleven started in their cup final win the week before.

They were very disjointed and beatable. Their second eleven was in no way superior to the eleven we put out.

Personally I will give the boys a pass for that performance last night, as they almost jagged a point in a tough fixture against a difficult opponent.

That said, I am getting more than a little fed up of us being plucky losers in this competition, when we have perhaps deserved more than that monicker in most games.

Your loyalty is admirable but I think you need to rewatch[especially the first half] They pressed the shit out of us so we were stuck in our own half a lot of the time. Unlike them, we were passing the ball to the opposition. I'd hate to be playing this team regularly in the A league.

That doesn't open the door back for Pav surely? Feel like DPC has been great
Don’t think so and if it were i think it would be for Warshawsky.

DPC hasn’t done a lot wrong but his timing has been a touch slow.

He also hasn’t had a game where he has been peppered but he also hasn’t won us any points which your keeper needs to do occasionally.

I think we stick with him but there is a lot of learning to be done. Wasn’t even the academy No1 for half a season (was more a shared roll) and is now in the ACL elite.

I think we just need to be patient with him which is easier at his age than the Pav

Why did we let Pat Beach go again??

more than fine with the result/score line. We lost a point from a blunder of our young keeper. I’m not upset with that. He will make some mistakes along the way (if you can’t accept that whilst supporting our club then I just don’t know, our young boys will always make mistakes along the way) but he’s already shown he’s good enough. Look at the positives, we gave the best J-League team a run for their money. Yeah we had some luck, so did they. We’re a lot more under strength than the team they put out.
I fully expected us to get completely and utterly spanked. Massive credit to the boys.

I’ve been increasingly concerned with Storms temper tantrums during matches recently - hadn’t been too worried initially as it’s a great sign that he is trying to hold accountability, but he’s been arm waving and yelling a hell of a lot recently, and last night there was a shot of him shaking his head dumbfounded at someone’s mistake.. now that’s exactly what I was doing on the couch as well, but I’m not sure it’s productive for one of the teams senior leaders to be doing that so consistently.

Don’t mind the passion, but it’s a fine line between being loud and productive and creating disharmony by continually blaming others for not being able to read your mind.

Team is a pretty quiet one. Needs someone to hold everyone accountable. I like it. We have to protect the standards.

As long as the other boys respect him it’s fine. No one was messing with Vuka even if he was wrong. Roux could loose that edge if his play slips but for now he has it

Was no sign of first team football at the time and city offered it, i presume

He has had some moments of oh shit for them too but he was excellent and will grow into another Aussie star keeper.

Definitely better than warshawsky and Pav and DPC will have to improve to catch him but has a few years to do that

WELL, that wasn't the shellacking we all expected , answer me this , has the J League level dropped ? cause i remember a few yonks back , you could watch Kashima Antlers and Urawa Red diamonds games on YT (and i did) and last night seemed to be a lesser level from Kobe, yes yes they subbed a few prior to kickoff but still ....either way cudos to the lads, especially you Brandtman , you little show off , that was fine piece of 2023 /24 goal set up play indeed .....Brickwall was awesome , his improved since Stormy came back , cant really put the kaybosh on anyone ....so yeah

So we were able to drag the top Japanese side down to our level? Sounds good to me.

Scoring 2 goals against a defence which had (proudly, very proudly) only conceded 1 prior seems ok.

We’ll be fine. Tonight sucks, but we move.
Fair point Pete, (although I doubt we would have said similar about a rubbish team dragging us down to their level when we were at the top); but I also recall you saying Pav would be fine too, at the beginning of the season.

Now he’s a “decent keeper” but far from the starting keeper he was proclaimed to be.

You know I always think highly of your opinion and genuinely appreciate the optimism. Somebody needs to maintain it. Fingers crossed you are correct on this one.

They rested a number of players, had won a cup on Saturday before backing up on Tuesday and they're sitting in a pretty comfortable spot to get out of the group even if they drop some points. Wouldn't read that much into it.

Creditable performance against the so called Kobe " second XI".If that team was playing in the A-League they would be in the top two so their "first team" would romp our comp.Shame that DPC made that error as we had momentum after Brandtman's goal though our opponents always posed a threat.

Kaltak was tops again( as he was against the Jets)though he and the team were caught out for their first goal.Paull played strongly and while he still makes errors looks more confident in his tackling and when he is in possession. He did over commit for the third goal but he did realise the threat and tried to close the striker down so I am not too critical of that passage of play.Harry is getting more confident and venturing upfield which is good to see.

Feijao turned the ball over early in the game but he had two nice bits of play-firstly getting behind the defender and providing the cutback to Kuol which the Kobe defender just got his foot to and conceded a corner( and good to see Alou getting into position for the pass) and secondly his header which just went wide when he caught their defenders napping .Possibly he should have done better as it was an uncontested header.

This ACL Elite comp shows the gap between A-League and Asian teams quite clearly in that we basically have field our best XI in each game while most of them have larger squads and pockets.

Agree with all of this except the last sentence as we are a long way from our first 11 due to injuries. The team that won the treble last season would be much higher up the table

I would say our best XI includes Trent, MDP and Tappy - with Theo and Duarte coming onto the bench. We have a thin squad and have been unlucky with injuries compared to the last 2 seasons. But that was not the first XI that Mark Jackson would have envisioned before the season.

Disagree - the team that won the treble lost 4 straight to start the season at this time of the year, so likely wouldn’t fare any better.

The team that finished last season AND the one that finishes this year would BOTH be higher up the table.

Our biggest issue is we are facing stronger opposition who are seasoned, and we are not.
