good to see him finally fit and raring to go:
A new slim-line Ahmad Elrich is hoping the five kilos he has shed after suffering crippling stomach cramps as a result of lactose intolerance will help him deliver the punishing pace to puncture Pohang Steelers.
With the Central Cost Mariners needing a win to keep alive their slender hopes of reaching the last 16 of the AFC Champions League, the now svelte 79kg wide man is planning to bounce off the bench and provide a turbo boost to Lawrie McKinnas men as they chase a minor miracle at the Steelyard Stadium.
"Im hoping to get about 40 minutes or more and Im feeling lighter and sharper than I have in a long time," said the former Socceroo.
"While the weight has gone, my legs havent lost any muscle and Im confident I can make an impact at some stage of the game. The training staff reckon I will be quicker than before and I agree."
Elrich, 27, has fully shrugged off the debilitating symptoms of his condition, adding: "It knocked me out for three weeks but Ive been training for the last couple now and I just want to help us get a result. Nothing short of a win will do.
"We feel probably play it tight early on and then go for broke in the second half, we have no choice. I aim to play my part, try get up there, get the ball in the box and change the game."
With just two points from their four Group H games, the Mariners appear to sinking fast but Elrich, a shaft of sunlight when he came on in the horror 5-0 home loss to group leaders Kawaski Frontale in matchday 4, is convinced all is not yet lost as they prepare to face the team they drew 0-0 with on matchday 1.
An unlikely victory would give the Mariners hope of squeezing into second spot, and the last 16, should they then beat Tianjin Teda at Central Coast Stadium in their final group game.
Though the Mariners face the Brazilian strike pairing of Denilson and Brasilia tonight, plus FYR Macedonian international Stevica Ristic and an array of former or current Korea Republic internationals, Elrich added: "We havent given up hope. Its been a hard campaign for us. Everybody knows we havent won this year and weve gone into the games a bit low on confidence, plus being out of season probably hasnt helped us.
"We know its going to be tough to qualify from where we are. Were realists but never say never. A win will change everything and then who knows what would happen against Tianjin? We drew with them away and should have won."
The Mariners have included National Youth League graduates Matthew Lewis and Nathan Sherlock, the latter of whom replaces injured playmaker Adrian Caceres.
Oft-injured striker Nik Mrdja hasnt traveled while Nigel Boogaard and Matthew Osman are suspended.
Whatever the Mariners' fate, Erlich believes the cub must recruit to strengthen their stocks for the future,
"We probably need players at the back and up front to freshen things up and give us a bit more impetus," he said.
"I dont think Lawrie will bring in players and build the team around them. Hell want players who will fit in with us. What we need most are creative players.
"The loss of Mile Jedinak to Genclerberligi in January was a huge blow. He won the balls that needed to be won and he could also create and score. He was smart and always knew how to read the play.
"But we trying to move on from that."
Elrich has another year to go on his contract, and says next season hes "going for broke" after overcoming a knee injury which rubbed him out for five months in 2008-2009.
"I feel like a brand new player," he added. "Ive missed the game badly. Now I just go out and enjoy myself. Thats when Im at my best when I just play for the love of it."
