Mariners vs Perth

the last person on the planet that you would want to take a penalty is little Michael McGlinchey. He can't shoot to save his life, he even misses in the warm-up before the game, and yet he gets to take the penalty - and surprise surprise he doesn't even get it on goal.

When we look back will we say this was a good season or great. Personally I was great till Xmas then we sold matt Simon and we haven't looked h same since.. Yes we won the plate but it was only a good season not great... And to be honest offside or not we had the chance to win 3 games

Love you Mariners. Chin up lads.

Great season everyone. Tough loss. But once we went to pens, I think we all knew it was over.

Onward now. I'm in for the long haul.

Looking forward to the rest of Asia.

We have won 3 out of our last 14 games! We sold two of our best players and totally changed our playing formation...both led to us becoming ordinary.
We are still a very decent side and hard to beat BUT we are a shadow of what we where earlier in the year.

To the players...you are gutsy and thanks for a great season.....the balls you have shown with the massive workload thrown at you has been tremendous.

To management.....you did very well considering everything that went against us and I'm sure that we can learn a lot tactically from our mistakes from the second half of the season. The improvement overall considering our budget constraints has been fantastic and remarkable.

To the fans....it's been a tough slog over the last two months, with games every few days and very few victories. To the 5k that come to EVERY game and to the Yellow Army, you have my admiration, love and gratitude. Even though the fair weather supporters didn't show this year, we are still easily the best supported side, per capita, in the country.

god bless you yellows!!!

My thoughts on tonight's game.

We were relatively poor with some good patches. Our tempo was low again and we only seam to play at the higher level against Brissy or ACL opponents.

I haven't seen the game on tv so hard to give proper opinion but I know some of the people that couldnt make the game like to hear some opinions on how we went.

Ryan 7. Overall very solid and loved the penalty goal. Would like to view Perths disallowed goal again.
Pedj 6. What's going on. Apart from the good engine he is playing like a muppet now.
Rose 7.5. A few errors but one of our better players.
Dutchy. 7.5. solid
Wilko 7.5 solid
WeeMac 6.5. Real mixed bag. When he got involved and drove forward we really look the business. He is key to our success or failure.
Hutcho 6.5. Some great tackles mixed in with some dross. Not really starting 11 standard anymore.
Rojic 6. Frustrating. So much talent but he is lazy. Having two plodders in central midfield really killed us.
Bozanic 7.5. Good effort. Can't fault the work rate.
Sutton 6. Tried harder tonight and looked marginally quicker but at his current fitness level is not good enough. Should never have started in front of Bernie.
Kwassie 7.5. Probably the only bright light from the last two months (apart from Wilko's consistency). Should have won us the game with some great chances.

Hopefully with the crazy work load taken off us we can excel in ACL.

M0M is tough tonight.

3pts Kwas
2pts Rose
1pt Bozanic

We improved massively once Bernie came on. We missed Amini big time. Rogic, although better balanced is not as good (ATM).

I can see the Roar carving up Perth next weekend. TBH I didn't care much about this game. It is hilarious to see the mental heavyweights come out and bag the boys as chokers again. Honestly, we could win the GF and they would call them chokers for not winning by a bigger margin.

Would have hated to contest the GF after the midweek ACL match. Shambles in the organisational department! Now we can concentrate on the Champions League. Wonder if the Scum realise there is still another competition for them to death ride us in? Was hilarious to see them make the trek down this evening for the match. Does it occur to them that they are effectively giving money to the club they apparently hate so much?

Indeed, the only choking we've been doing is in response to trying to swallow these game costing decisions we copped these last two weeks. Arnie had a bit of a spray which I though was well due.

Oh what a night! A night to remember - a night to forget. A night of riveting drama, gut-wrenching emotion and frustrating controversy. A night of extraordinary physical endeavour inlaid with sparkling jewels of skill from Tomas Rogic, in particular, and Bernie Ibini. A night when Mat Ryan beat Danny Vukovic from the penalty spot. A night of enduring simmering tension spilling over in the uncertain certainty of the cruel penalty shoot-out.

It all started so quietly: the Mariners slowly easing into the contest and Perth content to play for possession in their own half. McGlinchey, impressive throughout until the awful finale, was first to test the keeper: Vukovic making a regulation save from a worked free-kick. Mehmet brought a fine save from Ryan with a glancing header and Kwasnik cheekily tried to half-volley over Vukovic from 35 metres. The game opened out: Mehmet, an impressive mix of muscle, skill and intelligence was asking questions of the Mariners defence; Rogic, who favours his left foot, brought murmurs of approval from the crowd as he turned on his right and set Bojic free and took the return in the penalty area – the desperate Perth defender nudged the ball away for a corner but must have been inches away from conceding a penalty.

Kwasnik, in determined mood, then rocked Perth with a typical goal poaching goal, lurking at the far post as Perth failed to deal with a Bozanic corner and thrashing the ball past Vukovic. The Mariners set sail for the Grand Final. And then the FFA intervened, sending a message to the referee’s assistant to suspend the offside law and in no circumstances to raise his flag. He duly obliged and when Mehmet stepped offside through the Mariners back four he was able to feed the unmarked Smeltz for a tap in equaliser.

Even at the break but signs that the Mariners were increasing the tempo. Right from the restart they went for Perth and dominated the next half hour of play. Rogic stepped through and brought a flying save from Vukovic; from the rebound Rose clipped the outside of the post. Rose was in full cry, running ceaselessly at Perth and causing all sorts of problems. Perth no longer had the luxury of deciding to play possession in their own half, they were dogged holding on under the constant pressure of the Mariners attacks. Rose and Bozanic were causing mayhem on the left, matched by McGlinchey and Bojic on the right. Hutchinson was controlling the play. Only great desperation by the impressive feisty Jacob Burns and Van den Brink allied to quality keeping from Vukovic kept the Mariners at bay.

Mehmet had a goal rightly disallowed for offside (different lino; different understanding of the offside law) and the Mariners broke quickly downfield. Sutton cushioned an excellent header to Kwasnik who was wrestled to the ground: penalty! We all wanted Superman to step up and so it was that Patrick Zwaanswijk placed the ball on the spot; but Patrick looked nervous and although Vukovic went the wrong way the penalty was tentatively hit and came back off the bar.

Kwasnik then took centre stage. A long ball over the top had him free, one on one with Vukovic, but somehow his shot hit the former Mariner’s hero on the shin and deflected to safety. A minute later he was at it again; from almost the same position he placed the ball wide after Perth had failed to clear one of a series of Mariner corners.

Bernie came on and immediately had Perth back pedalling, twice finding space on the right for dangerous crosses and then cutting inside for a deflected shot off his left foot. One outrageous piece of inventive skill had him racing clear but Heffernan showed us he still has pace to burn as he rescued the situation. Perth broke and Smeltz should have done better than produce an unorthodox save from the impressive Mat Ryan. McBreen came on for the tiring Rogic.

Extra time came and the Mariners went forward relentlessly; the workrate of McGlinchey, Bozanic, Rose, Bojic and Hutchinson was incredible – a real testament to the work of Andrew Clark. Bernie produced another piece of outrageous skill to put himself clear but the referee pedantically called him back for with a frivolous call of feet too high. A McBreen header was puched away at full stretch by Vukovic.

Full time was called and despite Vukovic being much the busier keeper on the night penalties were going to decide the outcome. Perth went first and never looked like missing; the Mariners matched them – McBreen, Wilkinson, and deliciously, Ryan all successful and then McGlinchey stepped forward. I don’t know why. He is the last person I would nominate for a penalty. I never thought he could score and nor did the crowd. We were proved right: the Mariners least accurate marksman couldn’t even hit the target. Jacob Burns stepped up and applied the coup-de-grace.

No Mariners side has ever worked so hard for such sad reward; they were emotionally and physically spent. There was nothing left in the tank. No fan of this great little club could ask more of the players tonight. They were brave, determined, united and you can only have the greatest pride and respect for this team. They didn’t let anyone down: they can look back on an outstanding season.

Just telling the truth...sorry if my candour upset you. Suggest you watch McGlinchey in the shooting drill before the games. I agree with you that he had the balls to have a go (makes you wonder about some of the others; otherwise I thought he had an excellent game. BTW - did you really think he was going to score?

to be honest never had much confidence in any of our penalty takers none were 20 goal a season strikers, but penaltys r a lottery and for u 2 slag off a player for being brave n sticking his hand up for a pen i dont agree with.the game should have been wrapped up 2 many missed chances

If you're going to bag out McGlinchey you may as well bag out Zwaanswijk.....

It's a lottery, and last night was a case of 'first person to blink'. I hate to put pressure on Ryan, but I got the feeling he was absolutely shitting himself through the penalties.

. And then the FFA intervened, sending a message to the referee’s assistant to suspend the offside law and in no circumstances to raise his flag. He duly obliged and when Mehmet stepped offside through the Mariners back four he was able to feed the unmarked Smeltz for a tap in equaliser.

Good write up. Had to laugh at that one - though it was the same AR who missed Kwassie being way offside for his penalty, so at least he was consistent :p

Still, inexcusable for a game at this level

I can't be too upset over the loss - I just don't feel like we could've won the GF, and I couldn't handle a 4th GF loss.

Didn't get to watch the match unfortunately, wish I had been there though.
