This is also on the NYL thread:

The 2012/13 National Youth League (NYL) decider between Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Victory will now be played at Bluetongue Stadium (weather permitting) prior to Saturday’s round 22 Hyundai A-League contest between the same two clubs. Kick-off will be at 4:45pm.

East coast low heading for the coast with the main effect on Saturday = not going to happen.

Brilliant. A pity there is not more of this. Used to be that way in the old NSL days. Two games for the price of one. Sometimes the Youth game was much more entertaining! I don't remember the grounds being cut up that much from the Youth team game.

. used to be this way in the a-league (either youth or w-league) ... it does make it a big commitment though with an hour between games

. it was never popular and apparently expensive adding another two hours to the 'hire time' with all the associated expenses. i did enjoy watching the likes of bernie running around in the kiddies ... gee he has bulked up a bit since then

Im going to Brisbane on Thursday to pick up approx 40 pair of used and 10 pair of new football boots as well as at least 6 sets of kids uniforms and miscellaneous other football items from a club there to send to some deserving kids in the Philippines at a club I helped to establish. I will be leaving Brissie at approx 1pm their time on Saturday and the dash will be on to get to Bluetongue for the game.
My only fear is that I am flying Tiger Airways and after watching their show on the box I will have everything crossed that none of their problems they show will interfere with my flight to Sydney. Then of course there is the unpredictability of the trains . . . So no doubt I will get to see some but preferably all of the game This should be the biggest crowd of the year thus far except of course if the weather intervenes which with the early forecast it is not looking all that promising.

Bench: Pasfield, Hutch, Mile or Fitzy, Caceres.

Your bench has a keeper and 3 middies!!!! Not a great balance LOL.

I would swap Caceres for Mont or Olly depending on how they're performing or could swap him for McBreen in the AM role. We lack ball players in the midfield. Someone that can hold the ball when the opposition does the pressing game which the mariners find so hard to handle. Need a player to distribute the ball properly to our forwards.I believe Caceres needs to be given more first grade game time. He was thrown into the deep end v the scum which under the circustances he did what he could, then he played 30 mins v the roar and he perform well.Since then he hasn't even been on the bench.

How many games has Weemac shined on the left? Any? He doesn't belong there & we'd be better served by Mile.

If Olly is fit then he should be in. He was brilliant there a few games back & needs anpother chance while Hutch has been solid but doesnt give you as much as the other two. He's nowhere near as defensively solid as Monty & cant pass a ball as well as Olly.

I've gone for Fitzy on the left but wouldn't be surprised if Mile starts again.

What i would really like to see is us pushing right up the park in defence. Arnie should have learnt a hell of a lot from the WSWvVICTORY game last week. If we sit at the half way & wait for them we will not win. Thats not how you beat Ange's teams & its been shown for the last 2 weeks.

Good side but I'm not convinced on Fitsy yet..maybe give Sterj 50 mins and then bring him on for Sterj as he has looked decent of the bench

Lots of great posts. Good read, cheers everyone.

@ Adz, GA puts in 103% was golden. Lmao.
@ Wombat, heh, I could live with that, but we both know it's not going to happen right? ;)

Which sentiment pretty much goes for all the other lineups too... Hutch is pretty unlikely to be dropped. My money would be on the exact same squad lineup for us. But I think 12th's comments regarding ball to feet players is on the money and that means Olly needs to come in. Perhaps may happen for Sterj. MV will press us hard. It's worked for virtually every game Ange has played against us, so why change now. If we're talking what we'd like to see happen as opposed to what most likely will... I'd really like to see Duke get a start alongside Danny and take it to MV early. Danny also does well under pressure and at CAM is able to hold the ball under the kind of physical pressure MV will apply.

As to pressing MV out of defense, I'm not saying I disagree or that it couldn't work, but again, we all know that's not going to happen right? And to be honest, I really think this has to be seriously trained, and I would be very concerned that we would tend towards a lack of organisation on the counter and in general that could really hurt us. Even the pacing of this style mentally and physically takes adjustment to as a player and could really throw us. But happy to be proven wrong.

Fortunately, pressing as a whole I don't think is essential, but I think the key to stopping Victory is manning up against their enforcers, foremost of which is really sticking it to Milligan. (Danny at CAM with Duke ahead for this) Closing down Rojas. Which HAS to be FAST and EARLY, ALL GAME. (Olly and Monty would be best for this) And giving Flores no time on the ball either in our attacking third. Do this well and I think we'll have their measure. (Plus our fullbacks must track and mark properly this week)

Tough game. Big game. A real not to be missed game... And I'm overseas for the week and missing it also. :headbutt::headbutt::headbutt: Seems to be a few of the forum regulars out. Really can't stand missing games. Only happened a couple of times since inception. Very depressing. Who will be using what streaming links?

promdi442 - you're a credit to the sport and to people in general.

This game has me nervous - we're not used to losing this season, so how are we going to react? Going to be a real test of Hutcho's leadership (and, like Wombat (flap me, did I just agree with him on something?? Somebody check the surface temperate in Hell... :p) I'm not a fan of him in the leadership, but I remain optimistic and convince-able)

I anticipated a while ago that Perth would be the ones to knock us off. MV, anything can happen. They're never a team to be messed with, and if we play as badly as we have in some of the past weeks then we could be in a lot of pain.

Hesitant to say this, but this is another match where we prove our finals capability, IMO.

Thanks CGB but it is an easy decision to make when you witness first hand the equipment or lack thereof due to the financial constraints of the parents to be able to give their kids what our kids take so much for granted here in Australia.
The kids play with a carefree spirit and a true love of the game sometimes in boots that are tied together with string or with the sole of the boot coming away during the game. It is both comedic to see but also embarrassing when one realises the amount of equipment that is just disposed of with still life left in the equipment that these kids can use and benefit from.
I appreciate what the Brisbane club is doing but of course if I knew of a club where I could get the same support on the Central Coast then that would mean I would not be in danger of missing the game on Saturday.

Good match preview on the Roar... http://www.theroar.com.au/2013/02/20/muscling-up-helps-muzzle-melbournes-momentum/

For much of the season they have looked just about unstoppable, but, over the past fortnight, Adelaide United and the Western Sydney Wanderers have highlighted the chink in Melbourne Victory’s game – taking on an opposition with a more robust approach.
It’s not the first time this season it’s happened, but it’s certainly first time it’s happened on consecutive weekends.
Using varying degrees of tactical force, Adelaide and the Wanderers have proved that if you can disrupt the Victory by pressing as a unit, congesting the midfield, and getting in the back of their two speedy wide-men you can suffocate them and deny goal-scoring opportunities.
Much of Postecoglou’s game-plan is build around getting bodies and ball in motion, and channelling it through the middle of the park.
Once there, you will inevitably see a crafty ball-player like Marcos Flores or Billy Celeski, or Gui Finkler in the past, play an incisive pass in behind the opponent’s defence, where speedsters Archie Thompson and Marco Rojas inevitably pounce.
Postecoglou likes them to go quickly and expose teams that have not transitioned swiftly into defence and set their defensive structure up.
Thompson and Rojas often take a gamble defensively, happy to let their opposition fullbacks go forward, waiting for the play to break down.
Occasionally, when an opponent has decided to drop off and sit on the edge of the 18 yard box, the Victory have shown they have enough quality and creativity to play in front of a defence, either scoring from distance or playing through them.
Space is Melbourne’s best friend, and if you give it to them, either in behind or in front of the defensive line, you’ll get punished.
In the past fortnight we have seen both Mike Valkanis and Tony Popovic deny them the space and opportunities through a more combative and calculated approach.
Adelaide played right on the edge in round 20 at Hindmarsh, deciding to intimidate a Victory side missing its most physical midfielder, Mark Milligan, who was away with the Socceroos.
Valkanis did a couple of things tactically different that night, making a surprise choice at right back in Osama Malik. He did a great job pushing high on Victory’s wide men.
What Valkanis also did though was flip his midfield triangle around, leaving Jon McKain alone at the base and having Dario Vidosic and Marcelo Carrusca higher, as attacking midfielders.
What this did was allow Adelaide to press Melbourne higher. Jeronimo Neumann, Evan Kostopoulos and Iain Ramsey worked with Vidosic and Carrusca to really get in the face of the Victory and not let them build through the first wall.
They did this by placing pressure on holders Francisco Stella and Jonathan Bru whenever they went looking for the ball.
They weren’t afraid to concede fouls either, sharing them around, playing right on the edge.
Indeed, five yellow cards to nil in the first half told its own tale.
On the few occasions Victory were able to play through the first line, Adelaide remained compact, not playing too high or too deep.
It was perfectly executed and reminded me much of the way Popovic had disrupted the Victory back on New Year’s Day at Parramatta Stadium.
Having been totally outplayed by a ten-man Victory a few weeks earlier at Wanderland, Popovic showed he is nothing if not a quick learner.
Primarily he realised that you have to stop the supply to the two wide men by pressing high, giving them no space in the middle and then having your fullbacks tight on Thompson and Rojas, or whoever steps in their place.
Earlier, in round eight, the Wanderers had been guilty of giving Finkler too much space in the middle and dropping off whenever the ball got to the wide men.
By round 14 Popovic had made some tactical changes. Iacopo La Rocca was now partnering Mateo Poljak in one of the most physically intimidating midfields in the league.
It is a tactic the Wanderers manager has used in a number of occasions this season, primarily when he feels he needs a more robust and defensive approach.
The idea, quite simply, is that the Wanderers refuse to be intimidated by anyone.
When they need to play, Aaron Mooy will partner Poljak. When they need to be more solid, La Rocca will slot in.
When both were missing from the midfield against the Central Coast Mariners five days later, it was no huge surprise to find Daniel McBreen riding roughshod over a midfield featuring Mooy, Shinji Ono and Jason Trifiro.
So, in the blockbuster at AAMI Park on Saturday night, it was perhaps no surprise to find La Rocca and Poljak partnered up again, especially with Michael Beauchamp back in defence.
It suffocated the Victory, who were rarely able to pick up any loose ball in the midfield, while Flores was often ambushed when he ventured into Poljak and La Rocca’s world.
Winning the physical and tactical battle first appears to be the Wanderers motto.
This then allows the likes of Ono, Mark Bridge and Youssouf Hersi to shine and create higher up.
If all are on deck at Bluetongue in a fortnight, we should be in for an almighty arm-wrestle that could go a long way to deciding the Premier’s Plate.
But before then the Mariners host the Victory this week knowing that if they can rattle and unsettle them physically, they have every chance of winning and remaining atop the league.
Graham Arnold hasn’t always got it right tactically, particularly against the Victory.
Only in their most recent outing in Tasmania, last month, he made the almost fatal decision of dropping off and not applying any real press in the first half.
Only poor finishing and lots of luck sparred him that night.
It will need to be a different approach on Saturday night, and he can learn much from the way Valkanis and Popovic have gone about it.
One option might be to start Mitchell Duke up front and play McBreen as physical number 10, as he did in the 2-0 win at Parramatta.
Certainly, Postecoglou will be looking for a solution to problems of the past two weeks.
Whatever transpires in the run-in to the finals, the past fortnight has thrown up another fascinating twist in the title race.

Old School Saturday this weekend!

From YA Facebook
Calling on everyone to jump into your CCM supporters wear (who still has a season 1 Bay 16 shirt?) and come to Bay 16 for the CCM vs MV game Saturday 23rd at 19:45.

We are hoping that Bay 16 fills up and we have to move into Bay 15 and Bay 17.

The team has again this year performed for us and is there a better way to say thanks?

Grab your CCM gear and head down to Bay 16.

You don't have to sing, dance, clap or join in, however once you're in the bay and see the atmosphere you won't be able to help yourself.

Introduce yourself to the guys & gals around you and enjoy the game and lets make some noise and get the fortress shaking.

CCM vs MV - Will you be there in Bay 16?

I'm working in Sydney this weekend so won't make it to the game. I'm giving my ticket to a mate.

So now I've missed drubbing of Sydney 7.2 and possibly the most important game of the season....grhh...work is such a drainer.

COYY

I'm the same as you Wombat - missed the 7-2 and can't go this week. Very frustrating! Would love to go to the Youth game as well.

At least it may mean 3 more hooked fans as the guys who went in my place to the 7-2 haven't missed a game since :).

Will be interesting to see if this match is played ... weather predictions are for a massive storm front moving in on Friday while Saturday's forecast is for flooding rains... Bluetounge is not .... nay is a hopeless wet weather ground...

I am sure we upset some rain god a few years back as there has only been a handful of games we have played that have had good weather... either 40+ degrees or pissing down ....

Geesh it'd be nice to not have to contend with the weather... The Jest game was bad enough.
Still, for me, last weekend was the proverbial "one we had to have" - I'm quietly confident that we can take this lot... Although I'm not quite certain whether it's confidence or just my subconscious recognising that we don't have an alternative, we HAVE to do this.
Anyway, sad to say, but I'm feeling more and more like Chesty presents a better option than Dutchie at this point. I'm a little nervous about Rose too, although I'm not sure that there's much that can be done about it. Gambling on Rojas maintaining the relatively anonymous role that he seems to have maintained for the last month or two - 'cos he really caused Rosie some issues in the first game.
