Mariners V Weelington Round 4

We definitely played our 90 minutes in the first 45, after that we just started looking lethargic and the long ball started to creep in.
Overall, I thought we did play some good football, just need a little more stamina and get the depth back. Oh, and some one learn to finish.. please.

Jedi was a culprit of the long ball as well, I hardly see either Simon or Petrovski as a genuine target for these..

IMHO excellent game to watch.
You must be easily pleased. Very boring and terrible game to watch imo.

Don't you get bored with long all after long ball after long ball???

Yeah man ping pong is differnet game all together I thought. Ok to clear it from the back when  under pressure, but damn, get it down and pass it round is a much better for attacking play. Better to watch too!
one player who was guilty of playing way too many long balls was Bojic. Whilst Wellington, fark me, couldnt string 2 passes together without resorting to hoofing it upfield

Wellingtons game plan was obvious from the outset. Just lob it over the top and hope a striker gets to it first. May have worked to if they were ever onside.

IF you are using the long ball then please oh please use a diagonal kick that allows your strikers to attack the ball without running into the keeper.

exactly - chipped passes from the edge of the centre circle to the penalty area are keeper fodder, nothing else. get some angle first if you must play it. for adelaide against wellington last week, reid's ball to pantelis for pantelis to then set up cristiano is a perfect study in what works, compared to our second half dross.

better yet, use the wings and get to the by-line. look at goals from the weekend like miller's and moore's - the ball coming back out to a player coming on to it is a much better option, but we're not game to get to the by-line and cross or cut the ball.

better yet - in the liverpool vs united match the other night both goals from open play came from smart balls coming from the by-line to find a man. tevez's goal in particular came from a stunner of a pass.

we weren't going to lose yesterday and could easily have won it, but it'd be nice to just tweak the play a little bit to eke a bit more from the team and create a few more genuine chances.

FMD, Wellington were at home to an injury/illness ravaged side and they started with 2 defensive MF's and their only tactic was a long hoof over the top.

Our 1st 45 was pretty damn good and we ought to have gone in ahead. Sadly we didnt (that happens sometimes in football) and in the 2nd half I think we tired and resorted to our stock standard hoof and chase.

Matty needs the ball to feet so he can hold it up and Saso is not, has never been and will never be a target man.

With the 2 Mrdja's out (the real one and the guy who seems to want his crown as our resident sicknote) we had v few creative options.

A sad fact is that a mf of Hutcho, Porter and Ossie is "collectively" not good enough for the HAL. We need to get some people fit or its V2 again

I hope you lot don't play like that next weekend. There are only so many 5-0 drubbings I can watch take from Melbourne.
Mate ur team may just take the dog tag, this year with the spiting so fark off!!!

Well, that was a bit agressive ;D. If you read my post a little bit closer, it was alluding to my desire for a good contest next weekend laced with a little bit of competitive ribbing.

FWIW we will always have the dog tag, no matter how clean we do or do not play. I'm not too phased by it, everyone needs a "we love to hate" team. When you have players like Travis Dodd saying things like "I saw the whole thing, and I don't think he spat on purpose", the whole thing is a pretty obvious beat up.

The "we love to hate" team is the scum (newcastle) not melbourne so the dog tag stands!

(Although i agree i don't reckon he spat on purpose, but hey, he plays for melbourne not us so i don't care)

All my hatred is focused towards Sydney. I don't have enough to share around the other 6 clubs, sorry.

Saying "Love to hate" was probably the wrong choice of words on my part.

"better yet, use the wings and get to the by-line" - that would be Elrich and Caceres then? and Heffernan?

Bozza is still the business and should be kept until the end of the year.

Defence was pretty good with Boogs the standout. Bojic is a great signing but cocked up a few times through over-confidence! Clarky played well again but still gets a little lost defensively. Was unlucky not to score and also set up Osman superbly in first half.

Osman looked very off the pace to start with but improved as the game went on but like Porter (who was fairly good) is probably a little lightweight at this level in the middle.
Jedi was solid. Hutcho is a diver who needs to drive forward with the ball more.

Caceras should have come on earlier.

Shit, ugly game but we were clearly the better side.

Bring back Gumpey eh Dibo!!
