Weather suits our game, no excuses today we want 3 points

Personally I wouldn't start Sutton but I think Arnie will

The opposition may also suit Sutton a lot more than previous weeks. Let Sutton tire out their two big central defenders and then send Bernie on when they know they've had a physical battle.

Hopefully your right about the conditions, makes sense, he needs to perform today.

Bye bye premiership, this is the freshest we will be over the next three weeks and we are playing shit...

Simply don't deserve it, I don't even feel mad at Brisbane, they are a better team

What a horrible game. Last ten minutes we looked like we cared, and decided that if Matt Simon wasn't going to get us into the game, the rest just might have to. Doesn't seem like anyone is capable of stepping in the breach, and Matty's absence is looking more and more meaningful.

Hutch played well in patches, nice shot, but early on, the whole team looked so...static!

Not sure what we are playing at, but we really, really need to find a way to score!

Sick of us not stepping up in the games that really matter. Worst game we've played this year, and we have to keep making things hard for ourselves.

Sydney were complete crap & we couldn't put them away. Really disappointed...

The Assistant Referee on the Western Side spent most of the night watching what Chris Beaths decision was before lifting his flag. How much do we pay these guys. This is the A-League, our top competition of football. If the AR is not capable of making a decision, replace them. Oh and he didnt cost us the game.

I actually thought it was an enthralling game, full of excitement & tough tackling with some very good passages of play by both teams.
However, the game was marred by some poor decisions which went against us(go figure).
Without the benefit of the replay, which strangely cut out at the ground,I would say Sainsbury copped a deliberate elbow & the SFC goal for mine was offside.
It looked to me that Chianese recieved the ball with Ryan out of his goal & only one defender on the line.
If that`s the case the linesman should hang his head in shame.

It wasn`t our best effort but we shouldn`t hang our heads either. We fought back once again & clinched a draw with only minutes remaining & for that we should be proud.
In the last two months we`ve had the engine room of our squad literally ripped out. With Simon & Griffith gone,Pedj suspended & Amini injured we`re basically down four starting players. We can`t just replace them overnight,it takes time & as Mariners fans we should be patient, have faith & support these guys like there`s no tomorrow.

Ryan 7 - made some crucial saves but also made some errors with
distrbution.
Wilko 8- there was a time where Dutchy overshadowed the skipper but
tonight it was the other way around. A great defensive effort.
Dutchy 6- Not his greatest game with the errors continuing to creep in &
show that he`s only human.Still I hope he plays on with us
next season.
Sainsbury 7- continues to improve & looked comfortable while he was on.
Rose 7.5 - probably his second best effort this year. He made some
incisive runs & tracked back to keep SFC out.
Hutcho 7.5- Played solid, made a few fundamental errors but overall had a
good game & could have scored the goal of the season with a
little luck
Olly 7 - after spending so much time under Vidmar I thought he played
well
Weemac 7 - His constant penetrating runs had SFC in two minds all night.
As usual when Pedj is suspended he lacked support in the
front third
Rogic 7 - Drifted in & out of the game but created some chances for
himself.Overshadowed by Carle but improving with each game
Sutton 6.5- probably his best game for us to date with all the
conditions favouring him.Created some chances but faded
towards the end.
Kwassie 6.0- was Kwassie tonight
Ibini - really made an impact & the whole team lifted when he came on
McBreen- worked hard to get into the game
Hearfield- I wish he could have the same impact when he starts a
game.Good goal though
Arnie 9 - with troops being transferred,injuries,National
duty, suspensions etc. he really has done wonders. We should
never underestimate how good a coach this guy is.

Yellow Army- you guys are an absolute inspiration with the way you
sang your hearts out tonight.Thankyou.

That was excruciating to watch; we are hanging by a thread. I am reminded of the old saying about Defeat being snatched from the jaws of Victory as we stumble toward the finish line of the Premiership – still ours to win if we can only get it right. Many years ago I played for a side that didn’t lose in the first half of the season but did not win a game in the second. There was nothing we could do; no matter what we tried we just couldn’t get the energy right. The Mariners are like that at the moment: their football is as stuck in the deep mud as the poor horse Astro was this week. Perhaps the wound that is the loss of Matt Simon is draining our life blood away. Astro was finally rescued: I hope the Mariners will be too.

The first half was pretty poor by both sides; the only bright moments came either from Rogic’s skills or the Mariners’ mistakes, in particular Patrick Zwaanswijk. Both Mat Ryan and Ivor Necevski capably dealt with everything thrown at them. Kwasnik had the clearest chance after neat work from Sutton but the header was weak.

As the second half started I didn’t think that Sydney would be able to lift; I thought the Mariners had much more improvement to give. I was hopelessly wrong. Mat Ryan, who’s kicking game was surprisingly off today, was completely fooled by Jameson’s right footer as it clanged against the bar and then saved brilliantly when Chianese got though. It was all Sydney and despite Ryan’s heroics and Sainsbury’s desperation it was Chianese who gave Sydney the deserved lead. Arnie brought Bernie on for Kwas.

Bernie lit it up. His first move was to beat the man out wide on the right, get to the by-line and put in a dangerous cross: it was so simple, why weren’t the others doing this too? Moments later he was tracking back down the left – so much for those who say he doesn’t work. His dreadful miss when clean through was a metaphor for how things were going badly wrong for the Mariners. But he kept going, kept beating people, and looking dangerous all the time. Sutton horribly scuffed a chance after good work from Rose on the left; Hutch hit the bar with a thundering deflected drive; Bozanic somehow missed a header Belinda Neal could have knocked home after good work again by Bernie. It seemed to be one of those days. I was beginning to feel the misery rising. McBreen came on for Bozanic and Sydney became more desperate as the Mariners began whacking in the high balls. My misery evaporated as Sydney, so good at conceding late goals, did it again as they failed to clear and Hearfield headed home. The comeback was almost undone as the Smurfs broke with lightning speed but luckily there was no-one on the end of the cross – that would have been heart breaking - and then Sutton almost capitalised as Sydney crumbled again.

Not a good day but the point keeps the dream alive. It’s a long road to China and a long way back to Perth but the boys just have to keep fighting and believe in the dream.

My take on the players:

Ryan: some good saves but sloppy kicking – except for one monster clearance straight to mCbreen, almost the length of the field.
Sainsbury: a year ago against Sydney Arnie had to take him off at half-time, today he was much improved; he’s not the finished article, he’s not Bojic, but he did well enough
Rose: decent game; worked well early on with Bozanic
Patrick: he’s human. Made more mistakes than I have seen in a season; still plays with great heart and character.
Wilko: first half majestic, calm, unruffled. One great tackle after Patrick’s mistake. Second half caught out a couple of time.
Hutchinson: Sorry, but I didn’t know he was playing until he hit the bar. He’s a great battler but he struggled to give us any hold on the midfield today.
McGlinchey: an early mistake almost cost us, and failed to track Carle after he played the one two with Emerton for Ryan’s first save. Worked hard but missed the dynamic support of Bojic and failed to provide any edge.
Bozanic: there is something about Olyroos returning to the Mariners – they start OK but then fade into obscurity. We need the pace, skill and go forward he can offer but it didn’t happen today.
Rogic: he’s a great prospect but it is more than a little frustrating that the team seems to be waiting for the rookie to provide the answers.
Sutton: neat play early to set up Kwas; some nice touches around the penalty area – the team needs to play to his limited strengths to bring the best out of him. Seemed to be a victim of some unnecessarily fussy refereeing.
Kwasnik: if he buries the header we win; he didn’t. Sums up Kwas – nearly but so often falling short.
Bernie: This guy was up for it. He’s quick, skilful, confident and willing. He must start.
Hearfield: Looked sharp when he came on; nice goal (he might not have been on if Sainsbury hadn’t been injured). Impact sub is his best role and he played it well today.
McBreen: Another who made a difference; good touches immediately, physical presence. His had a big influence on the come back.

MoM: Bernie – lifted the team with his desire and skill
Supported by Rogic, Ryan, Wilko, Sainsbury and Rose

On another note: Thanks, Aurelio Vidmar, for once again cruelling the fitness of Mustafa Amini – given our financial situation I think Peter Turnbull should sue FFA for compensation.

Watch a bit more carefully next time and you might learn something.

The referee and the assistants work as a team. The referee is always responsible for the final decision and has to wear the ultimate responsibility. Every time the ball went out of play, the assistant held his flag on the side to indicate which team should get the throw. This is as much a signal to the referee of what the assistant believes as holding his flag up. The ref would then make eye contact with him, confirm his agreement and they would both try to signal together - a fine display of teamwork. On the one or two occasions when the ref saw it differently, the assistant would follow the referee, switch the flag to the other hand and signal. It's not being inconsistent, it's simply allowing the ref to make the ultimate decision, and not giving conflicting signals which would frustrate and confuse the players.

Scott is a fine assistant and rarely gets it wrong. Beath, who is not my favourite referee, also had an excellent game.

3 bounce-ups in one game - unusual.

Personally I've seen enough of Sutton. Nice touches early on? Not good enough. Driving the central defenders to distraction is what we need. His short passing is limited, he doesn't attack spaces and he's slow.

Bernie and Kwasildinho is my starting frontline now.

My take on the players:

Ryan: some good saves but sloppy kicking – except for one monster clearance straight to mCbreen, almost the length of the field. STRANGELY BAD DISTRIBUTION .
Sainsbury: a year ago against Sydney Arnie had to take him off at half-time, today he was much improved; he’s not the finished article, he’s not Bojic, but he did well enough. DECENT REPLACEMENT BUT A PALE SHADOW OF BOJIC.
Rose: decent game; worked well early on with Bozanic. BACK TO TOP FORM. MY MOM.
Patrick: he’s human. Made more mistakes than I have seen in a season; still plays with great heart and character. OWES WILKO A DRINK.
Wilko: first half majestic, calm, unruffled. One great tackle after Patrick’s mistake. Second half caught out a couple of time. GOOD CAPT'S KNOCK.
Hutchinson: Sorry, but I didn’t know he was playing until he hit the bar. He’s a great battler but he struggled to give us any hold on the midfield today. NOT BAD BUT NOT GOOD.
McGlinchey: an early mistake almost cost us, and failed to track Carle after he played the one two with Emerton for Ryan’s first save. Worked hard but missed the dynamic support of Bojic and failed to provide any edge. TRIED HARD.
Bozanic: there is something about Olyroos returning to the Mariners – they start OK but then fade into obscurity. We need the pace, skill and go forward he can offer but it didn’t happen today. LINKED WELL WITH ROSE.
Rogic: he’s a great prospect but it is more than a little frustrating that the team seems to be waiting for the rookie to provide the answers. GOOD IN PATCHES BUT NOT DYNAMIC ENOUGH.
Sutton: neat play early to set up Kwas; some nice touches around the penalty area – the team needs to play to his limited strengths to bring the best out of him. Seemed to be
a victim of some unnecessarily fussy refereeing. GREAT FIRST HALF. SET UP OF KWAS WAS PURE CLASS. NEEDS A GOAL.

Oops...bloody iPads.

Kwas. Not at the races.
Bernie. Must start WITH Sutton. I think that combination will bear fruit.
McBreen. Very good again. Having a good season.
Hearfield. Thanks Troy!!

Yellow Army.....tops marks.

3pts rose
2pts Bernie
1pt wilko

I think Amini and Bernie need to start. We lack grunt in midfield and are sloppy upfront.
Lucky to get the point but we are still masters of our own destiny.

We must admit that in the last 4 games we've been consistent.Consistently bad!!How many more opportunities is Sutton going to be given?Bernie is 10 times better than him.Duke, from the youth team is better than Sutton.Rogic is the only one who's attempting to play football but he's got no support from the midfield. We're missing that player that can distribute the ball properly to the strikers.A ball player and in this team we don't have him.Musti could be an option but to be honest, the times he was on the field, he hasn't delivered what's expected of him.Like Duke, I believe Anthony Caceres from the youth could be the answer or an option.Sydney is one of the weakest teams in the league and we struggled. Why?Because football is not just about working hard, strength, height, physic, agro.Apart from all these aspects(which are important), a team must be balanced and must have those players that have close control, good technic, vision and can create and distribute the ball properly. We're still leading the comp but if we don't make changes in some positions I don't believe we'll be premiers.Go MARINERS!!
