Mariners v Queensland Minor Semi Finals

TBH 4-1 is a true reflection of the gulf in class between the sides when you factor:

*CCM strikers woefully out of form
*No Jedinak
*QLD in very good form

For mine, our problem all season has been possession and patience. We've had neither.

We've failed to maintain possession because we lacked patience. Whenever we've had the ball, we've been too quick to try and score after a couple of passes, always looking for the miracle ball to put one of the strikers through on goal. As a consequence we've turned the ball over far too quickly and cheaply.

I also think Caceras is a potential match winner as a creative mid. Sure he's had some ordinary games and has lacked consistency, but he's the type of player you need to persevere with. He seems to me that he is very much a confidence player who needs to know that even though he might have the odd bad game that the gaffer is going to stick with him. He will grow into the role if given the time to develop. LM hasn't done that and I think it's a mistake.

It was similar with Tommy P. Lawrie hooked him far too often or didn't start him at all when he was clearly our best player. He hasn't allowed Caceras the time to grow in the role when it is the one type of player we've lacked the most this season.

Most interesting is that there's only a moderate amount of cap space to work with next year:

#1) Matthew Nash
#2) Andre Gumprecht
#3) Paul O'Grady
#9) Nik Mrdja
#12) Greg Owens
#17) Matthew Osman
#15) Andrew Clark
#22) Pie face
#23) Mile Jedinak
#30) Andrew Redmayne (GK)

Are the only ones off-contract. Of those, the ones pretty much guaranteed to go have been underlined. Only two would be on six figures or to close to it. The others won't free up that much at all.

Surely time to look overseas?

And marinersman, sorry but you're wrong. The problem is that Caceres isn't a #10, he's a winger.

Well every team can afford to fill the cap. I'm talking marquee aside here.

But the loss of the above players (minus Redmayne who will surely stay), if they were all to go (which they surely won't - way too much turnover), would free up about $600-700k? Not really that much, given teh changes required.

I wouldn't be blaming the strikers for not being able to score. Pretty hard when you need to come back to half way to get the ball. When the were receiving it around the box at the end of the game, they were creating good chances.

I also wouldn't blame the back - while they didn't do extremely well, they were constantly under pressure because we couldn't hold possession. (66% to QLD at one stage).

I think the problem is the midfield. There was very little movement off the ball. A lot of strolling and ball watching... then the play slows down, QLD get back, we lose options and pass it backwards or play a panic ball to the opposition. Then when the ball got pushed up forward, the midfield wasn't following up the strikers. Dylan or Matt would get the ball with no one running off them, the ball would be loose between half way and the box, and midfield was hanging at half way waiting for QLD to get the ball and run at them.

Then there were the stupid free kicks we were giving away.

Then there was our approach to the game. Holding off for the first 60 minutes before throwing everything at them? WTF? This is what the commentators said was Lawrie's plan, and Wilko pretty much confirmed it by saying they would hope to win it in the final 20 minutes. I didn't see Japan do that when they only had to win 1-0 and not 2 or 3-0. We left it until we were 2-0 down and had to win 4-2 before we started attacking - and we looked good. Doing that from the word go would have allowed us to iron out the shit touches and bad finishing.

I don't think flushing the team out or getting a new manager is the solution - but I think we need 2 very good midfielders and a new mentality (more hunger and more faith) and the rest will fit.

Mariners out!!!! Win games or piss off to the Northern Beaches!

lol.

EDIT: Actually, I was expecting a lot more frustrated idiots on here saying how we need to clear out the entire team and buy a team of world class players.

Quite brilliant. Tell you what, I'm sure he will match you dollar for dollar.

Better still, he can go and then we can find another football mad backer or fold.

Would you be happy then?

Well there's that for the season. Let's face it, this was about as good as the squad was always likely to obtain- top 4 but never quite good enough to challenge the 3 best sides in the league, because it is a much better league than last season.

It's better this way, the cracks are showing and the side is in definite need of an overhaul. Better now than for a particularly disastrous season, maybe?

f**king hell!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was a disgrace!

My Mrs said to me...."Do you think we will get the two goals needed?" as they annouced the line up and I said......"Not a f**kin hope with that starting 11!" (after i'd spent all day trying to be positive).
We are chasing a 2.0 deficit and we start with two defenders in midfield and another middie (Osman) who has never set foot in an opposing penalty area in 4 years of Football!  Jesus...thats attacking!!

Still, against all reason I dared to hope even getting pissed off when my better half scoffed when we conceeded the first goal so lamely. How dare people laugh at us....the annoying thing is my Missis knows f**k all about sport but can always pick the winning team (or Boxer or Muay Thai Fighter) after only a few minutes, i've dragged her to thousands of fights and games over the years...and her honesty and perception is so frustratingly spot on...she has no preconceptions or loyalties...therefore she sees what alot of us miss or choose to miss.

Basically we are shit atm...pure and simple. In season 1 & 2 Gumps carried us and in the last 2 seasons Jedi did the same.
We have some good players but far too many passengers.
I didn't give marks last week becuase we were so bad no one would have got above 6/10 but seeing as its the last game of the year i'm give my opinions:

Danny  7/10  Good game...showed quality.
Porter  5/10  Rubbish....Zullo made him look like a monkey,as positionally suspect as usual
Wilko  4/10  Pathetic..basically an insult to the armband. Switch to Rb or f**k him off becuase he is the WORST cb in HAL.
O'Grady 5/10..love the bloke but he is not up to the standard sorry!
Clarke .Not atarting player 5/10..No quality..time to retire.

Heffernan. 6/10....Ok.
Osman...5/10  f**k off to Qld and do us all a favour
Hutcho...5/10  Pathetic really.  I like the bloke but he is a winger at best.
Boogs ...6/10  Like i said before...Centre Back's
make shit middies and Boogswas ordinary. Still slow as f**k.

Simon  7/10..made a nuisence,,good effort
D-Mac 4/10...rubbish

Subs:
Sasho...6/10 Better than Macca.
Disco...6/10  Looks liked he is ripped half the time but at least had a go.
Caceras..6/10....Should have started.  Has some quality unlike Osman/Hutcho etc.

Lawrie why didn't you bring on Gumps you idiot...remember last season against the Scummers!

This money issue, or part of, could potentially be solved by money from the ACL right? even if we get knocked out in the group stages, there is the extra TV money, gate receipts etc that we normally wouldn't receive

Questions, questions, questions....

Isn't Turnbull's money being used for the property development which he will maintain control of?

Have the board been too long sighted and allocated too much cash into the clubs training ground and been caught out by the economic down turn which must account for some of the lower crowd figures that all clubs have been affected by?

Is that why they accepted a low ball offer for a contracted player which has seen our season end in our worst ever run, in terms of form and results?

Without adequate screening cover that defence looks a water tight as the grave yard in pearl harbour and needs to replaced on mass, else those nippy little Asian players are going to tear us apart like Thompson, Dodd and Nicholes have done so with such ease the crown jewels were ransomed off on NYE! So do we have 3 defenders and a play maker waiting in the wings for the ACL????
