Rain, dodgy pitch, high tempo attacking game (dare I suggest a few long balls). Few beers, football.

Mariners keen for fresh startArticle from: Font size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment By John Taylor

THE Mariners could be without blockbusting striker Dylan Macallister if he fails to shake off a bug before the Asian Champions League opener against Pohang Steelers at Central Coast Stadium tonight.

Mariners coach Lawrie McKinna admitted the best Macallister could hope for was to come off the bench "if he is feeling OK" but insists his team is refreshed after a disappointing end to the A-League season and ready to take on the cream of Asia in an attempt to emulate the outstanding feats of Adelaide United.

"I don't think people realise what a fantastic and huge performance it was by Adelaide when you consider they were playing out of season and what they achieved (reaching the final)," McKinna said yesterday.

"If we can get past the first stage then anything is possible.

"The first match is tricky against the Koreans. But they must be a very good side because they just beat the champions Suwon Bluewings in the K-League opener on Saturday.

"We don't know a great deal about them and they won't know a lot about us."

McKinna dismissed suggestions the Mariners were still feeling depressed by their poor form in the latter stages of the A-League, where they lost five in a row, including the two legs of the semi-final against Queensland.

"That's over. We are treating this as a new four-month season and we've prepared for that physically. The boys are up for it. We've done a lot of hard work and the trip to China last week was fantastic and it opened up everybody's eyes what to expect.

"If we get a win we are top of the league and everybody forgets about the last five games. It's a fresh new start. It is important that we get a result of some sort.

"The first game is always an unknown. We've got tapes and stuff of them from last season but they've got six or seven new players. At the weekend I noticed they did play the same way as they did last year.

"The first five or 10 minutes tomorrow we'll be seeing how they line up and what they do and hopefully the things we've put in place will work out for us."

Matt Simon and Nik Mrdja will lead the attack but McKinna is hopeful Macallister can still make an impact off the bench.

"He picked up a bug in China. He phoned this morning to say he was off to see a doctor. He wasn't feeling the best yesterday and got worse overnight," McKinna said. "Same with Adrian Caceres. He missed (training) yesterday. He's got the flu and he still wasn't good this morning. But they are both included in the squad."

Mariners: D Vukovic, B Porter, A Wilkinson (c), N Boogaard, P Bojic, D Heffernan, J Hutchinson, S Huke, M Osman, N Mrdja, M Simon.

I'm loving the thought of some midweek, cold, damp football. Would make for a great atmosphere if only it didn't turn our crowd away.

i reckon our atmosphere is often better when the crowd is small. let's just hope the diehards are still there, in bay 16, doing their bit.

I agree .... i reckon the bay should still be fairly full providing its not pissing down... only 4 hrs till i hit the leagues....

this little bit of water shouldn't bother anyone....you would think.....probably will thin the attendance out...BUT...whoever does show will be there for the boys.....
