Mariners v Fury

A lot of what bikinigirl said was right. Howver, my frustration came not from a slow build up, but rather when we recovered the ball in their half and just didn't move forward quickly enough when we had the space and numbers.

AT LAST SOMEONE KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT SPOT ON.

Well :p to you too

:D

I agree by the way that Bikini Girl was spot on.
I've commented in similar vein to this before...
Griffiths has games where he looks very comfortable with the ball at his feet and then games like that against the Fury. He is young however so greater consistency will undoubtedly come. But his role is critical to the effectivity our formation. He still gets my starting spot over Hutch at this point because of his aerial presence and previously shown ability to move the ball forward quickly (most of the time) but with a mobile and skilful ball playing midfield like ours I believe you need a DM with a very high work rate, decent pace and fitness to keep up.

Paartulu for Roar is a monster in this regard. Keeping up with mcKay, Broich and Murdocca etc very well.
The rate Roar play at and the way they have handled their schedule would lend credence to the idea that they are clearly the fittest squad in the HAL. They are certainly the most mobile.

All that said, I think players like Williams who have pace and such boundless energy do an excellent job of stifling the ball being played out calmly from the back for any side - and this saw Griffiths and most others trying to unload very quickly once he comes baring down on them. Bozanic however happily took Williams on and then picked his passes which I have to say impressed me no end.

I just can't stop saying how much Williams would be the perfect fit for our team.

I agree Pat, it was the seeming lack of endeavour when we were in good positions with options that had me at times frustrated and yelling for it to be played forward. Though I may just lack "sophistication" ;)

No, I'm all for patience and I like and understand possession based football, but I think our lack of endeavour at times was very self evident and is what GA was clearly referring to in saying we were too negative.

Too often we opted not to play the more difficult but precise passing game that we have demonstrated we can in the past. Perhaps because we were playing at a lesser tempo with thoughts of preservation in mind as some have put forward or perhaps because our touch was sloppy too often our confidence lowered...

Anyhow, we're clearly capable of it, and clearly will be looking to play a more positive and faster paced game come boxing day - and we'll need to if we want to take second place and go on with it from there.

Can't wait!!!!

COME ON MARINERS!!!!

. at least the match has encouraged some debate which i think is great ... but we all see things quite differently. other than swayze, you have rated griffiths above all other starters ... however much of your other criticisms i believe have their root cause at his feet

. not for the first time ... when we have had possession, griffiths sat too deep. it really limits our options when trying to play out from the back. with the option of a dm running backwards wilko often took the option of going back to ryan in order to create the space griffiths was not offering

. consequently the likes of the wee-man were being drawn backwards and inwards to create an option because griffiths was too deep. because of this we ended up with a huge gap between our midfield and strikers ... passing was no longer an option. it didn't take much pressure from north qld to resort to the long ball

. as for the booing and continual 'foward!' calls from the crowd ... nothing has changed in five years, its always been the case. but i think it shows a lack of sophistication in the stands - like i said not much has changed in five years. bearing in mind the above, not only is it often the best option ... sometimes it is the only option

. a number of times on wed all 20 outfield players were compressed into about a quarter of the pitch ... very difficult to play the right ball in that situation. as we inched forward space became even more restricted - a backward pass often created the space needed, suddenly there was twice as much room and the 'right ball' should have been easier to play

. unfortunately most of the time the whole midfield just tended to drop deeper with the opposition at their backs so instead of relieving pressure it actually increased it

Laying the blame on Griffith is a big call. He may have been deep a few times but that happens in most games.

If,as you say, he was constantly to deep(which I disagree with) wouldn`t Wilko,(as the captain & the player that seemed to have the most problems with playing forward)have had a word to him?
Likewise with Weemac wouldn`t he have said something?

As Pat Said "It was the seeming lack of endeavour when we were in good positions with options that had me at times frustrated and yelling for it to be played forward"

Statistics have shown ( see "THE WINNING FORMULA") that most goals come from less that six passes.
